Immigration Paper-Compare/Contrast
Immigration is a topic that has been argued many times in the United States. Many people support it while others believe that immigrants are criminals who commit the crime of entering the U.S. illegally. Roberto Rodriguez and Star Parker both use different styles of writing in “Border on our Backs” and “Se Habla Entitlement” respectively. Although Roberto Rodriguez uses a personal approach to convey his message, Star Parker’s method of using real life facts and details to support her opinion really pulls through and is therefore more convincing. Roberto Rodriguez tries to use emotion to motivate and capture the reader’s attention to support his feelings for immigration but fails to back up any of his

He asks “Why is all the hate and vilification directed at brown peoples and the southern border?....why are these politicians also not bothered by the millions of Canadians, Europeans, or Russians who overstay their visas?”(Rodriguez 560). Questioning is not considered to be very skillful in writing. By putting these statements in question form, Rodriguez is almost making them a fact, when the reality is that immigration laws and problems are aimed toward all illegal immigrants not just South Americans. The main objective of the author is to answer the reader’s questions not create more questions which may confuse the reader and derail them from the main topic. Not only is this confusing but Rodriguez continues to try to influence the reader without any proper validation. On the contrary Star Parker uses research and real life statistics to influence the reader’s opinion. “Se Habla Entitlement” is filled with facts and research. She reports “Last year the Pew Hispanic Center surveyed adults in Mexico and asked them if they would come to the United States…Forty-six percent responded yes…When asked if they would do it illegally more than 20 percent said yes”(Parker 565). She continues “…almost half of Mexican adults say they would rather live in the United States, presumably because of the opportunities our free society affords”(Parker 565). First she shows the facts about immigration then goes on to
Recently illegal immigration has become a very pressing issue among people. Many people around the borders are being greatly affected by the issue and think immediate action needs to be taken to put a stop to the issue. The Documentary Border War: Battle Over Illegal Immigration takes a stand on the issue using many examples of pathos, ethos, and logos to try and persuade people that illegal immigration is a very serious issue and we need to put a stop to it. This documentary follows the lives of people who have been affected by illegal immigration, and explains how they feel about the issue. Another way that people can look at the issue of illegal immigration is through the eyes of the immigrants, and the reasons why they might be trying
Jose Antonio Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize winning author, shares his life-long journey as an undocumented immigrant in his text, “My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant.” As the title suggests, Vargas attempts to convey to his audience, who likely never has and never will experience anything similar to what he has, what it is like to live as an immigrant in the United States of America. Skillfully, Vargas details the perfect number of personal stories to reach the emotional side of his audience, which is anyone who is not an immigrant. Through the use of his personal accounts Vargas is able to effectively communicate that immigrants are humans too while simultaneously proving his credibility, as he has experience and a vast amount of knowledge
Immigrants are never fully welcome in a new place because people form small “in-groups” and ignore those in the “out-groups” in most cases. Smith starts this essay with a brief story about a fourth grader, Rodrigo Guzman and his family being deported back to Mexico, focusing on the reaction from his classmates when
Illegal immigration it is a controversial issue for many years. Immigrants do not have the same benefits as Americans citizens. According to the article Illegal Immigration by Kathleen Brown states “In the past decade, the number of illegal immigrants has double, to 2.1 million, equivalent to the population of Arkansas” (Brown). In fact, illegal immigrants immigrate to America, but their main intention is to get better opportunities in life. The American dream is all over the world, which is the principal reason why people come to United States to make their American dream true. However, the epiphany is that Americans protect their country by implementing more laws and enforcing their borders secure.
She then continues to speak on how their deportation affected her and how it made her feel. In this interview Guerrero speaks about the traumatizing experience of coming home from school one day only to find out her parents have been deported and how the only comfort she had was the kindness of strangers who went out of their way to nurture her while other family members were contacted. This video offers a bias point of view based on the fact that her parents were the people deported and due to the emotional connection they had, would want them to stay. This video would only help the side supporting the argument that undocumented people should be allowed to become citizens. However, the video does offer the useful point of view of a child of undocumented immigrants and how the deportation of her parents has affected her. This video would be very useful evidence that to neglect the ability for undocumented immigrants to become citizens leave their children in isolation and fear in their country when their parents are
The one thing that stood out to me in this article was when Javier stated, “He worn a walkie-talkie then in his role as a manager, and it was his job to call everyone back to the line at the end of each break. He had never felt more a part of America than he did in these moments, hearing his own voice over the factory loudspeakers, issuing orders in English.” The reason why this statement stood out to me is because for Javier it seems like his past life was that, and for once, he tasted his piece of the American pie. However, the one thing that made Javier dream false was his status in the United States. Therefore, some of the pros and cons of immigration reform in the U.S... In the case of Javier,
Within the film A Better Life there are many examples of situations that are seen as subjects which many people do not openly talk about. Circumstances such as illegal immigration and how people who do chose to enter the United States through backdoor channels can actually be a benefit to society and raise productive members of society. Furthermore, the movie depicts an illegal, Carlos Galindo and his struggles of maintaining a job, being a single parent, and at the same time evading detection from United States immigration officers. This struggle of trying to provide for his son Luis and make sure he maintains the correct direction which he is following to be a successful member of society is plagued by Luis’s friend, Facundo and his girlfriend, Ruthie Valdez. Both of Luis’s friends are on the track of being stuck inside of a Hispanic gang. This rips Luis in half due to his proper upbringing by his father Carlos. This paper will document multiple occurrences from the film and analyze the cultural significance for each event.

With all things considered illegal immigrations affects everyone. These undocumented people can be a neighbor, a waiter, or even a housekeeper. However, one author by the name of Thomas Sowell disagrees. Sowell claims that illegal immigration laws make a mockery of the justice
Kalapodas 8 Dec. 1999 History 101 Dr. Tassinari Immigration: The New American Paul Kalapodas 8 Dec. 1999 Immigration For many, immigration to the United States during the late 19th to early 20th century would be a new beginning to a prosperous life. However there were many acts and laws past to limit the influx of immigrants, do to prejudice, such as the Chinese Exclusion Act. Later on into the 20th century there would be laws repealing the older immigration laws and acts making it possible for many more foreigners to immigrate to the United States. Comparing the texts, both works cover the topic of immigration. Both focus on the issues contributed by the millions of illegal immigrants in the United States. Both text agree that many immigrants view the United States as the land of opportunities. In the text “The Border”, the authors state that many illegal immigrants continue to “keep slipping through” the borders and are willingly to take risk because they believe that it will be worth it once they have started a new and better life (430). In a survey, the authors state that twenty-one percent of Mexicans interviewed say “they would come to United State immediately…even If they had to come illegally” (430). The survey proves that
In the year of 2003, there were amidst 9 to 13 million illegal aliens in the united states. Fox News opinion poll reports that approximately 41 percent of citizens in the United States say that illegal immigrants are committed to the country once they barge into America (Pearce 21). Illegal immigrants are utterly committed to America, but doing what is illegal is inconsiderate to Americans. In order to understand either legal or illegal immigration, one must understand the difference among the two (Pearce). Knowing the difference in legal and illegal immigration would help the other parties considerably in understanding what is right or wrong.
Undocumented immigrants who come to America have always been stigmatized, especially Mexican immigrants. The novel “Into The Beautiful North” by Luis Alberto Urrea highlights many of the issues faced by undocumented Mexican immigrants in the United States. The main characters in the book illegally cross the border from Mexico into America and go on a journey to better the lives of everyone in their village back home. Throughout the story, they witness and experience issues that Mexican immigrants face such as Border Patrol abuse, discrimination, language barriers, and labor hardships. Though the story is fictional, it illustrates real life problems that need to be addressed. There are efforts to solve these issues, but they lack support needed to really make significant change in a timely manner. There are also various potential solutions, some more obvious than others, but they simply have not been invested in due to reasons such as lack of supporters or funding. Popular opinion and modern media portray undocumented Mexican immigrants are portrayed as unwanted invaders who are here to ruin the country, but this is simply not true. They are human just like Americans and they want to better the lives of themselves and their families. People need to recognize everything that they go through just so they can live in this country. The fact that undocumented Mexican immigrants endure many hardships so that they can escape the poor conditions in Mexico and seek better lives for
