Imogene M. King was a great contributor in developing theories and a strong advocate who worked with many groups of individual to achieve the ultimate goal of patient care satisfaction. She worked on multiple theories like middle-range theory of goal attainment, transaction process model and conceptual system theory. Imogene King is a strong advocate for theory-based education and practice for nursing. Her conceptual system for nursing provides a broad and enduring framework to guide nursing practice, derive middle-range theories, and integrate ongoing changes in nursing and the health care system. (Frey, M. A. (2006) One of the major topic was the conceptual system theory which consist of three systems and they are individual system, interpersonal system and social system. Each of the systems are unique in their own ways and equally important and valuable. Concepts for understanding personal systems are perception, self, growth and development, body image, learning, time, personal space, and coping. (Frey, M. A. (2006) Individual system focuses on one persons ability to function as a single force with the available resources. In life whether it is personal or professional situation being …show more content…
(Killeen, Mary B;King, Imogene M Apr-Jun 2007 ) The Theory of Goal Attainment is a combination of personal and interpersonal system and focuses on nurse-patient interaction which in the end helps achieved positive outcome. We as nurses also need self goal and achievement. Self refection and goal orientation in order to provide quality care. We can only give the care needed to anyone if we take care of ourselves first. The other necessity to achieve the goal of quality care is to have a great patient-nurse relationship. When nursing staff and the patient are working together to reach the same goal of getting better treatment the results are always
Nursing theories have been a fundamental tool used to explain, guide and improve the practice of nursing. Theorists have contributed enormously to the growth of nursing as a profession. The four grand theorists I chose are Virginia Henderson, Peplau, Myra Levine and Jean Watson. These theorists have contributed tremendously in the field of nursing through their theories, and research. One thing the theorists have in common is that they are patient centered. They are all concerned on ways we can improve our responsibility to the patients, their families and the environment. They have different ideas but they are all aiming towards achieving the same goal, which is patient satisfaction and safety. Their differences are in their areas of
Nursing is a unique profession which is built upon theories that guide everyday nursing practice. According to Taylor, Lillis, & Lynn (2015), “Nursing theory differentiates nursing from other disciplines and activities in that it serves the purposes of describing, explaining, predicting, and controlling desired outcomes of nursing care practices” (p. 27). Many nurses may unknowingly apply a theory or a combination thereof, along with critical thinking to get the best outcome for a patient. Theories are used in practice today because they have been supported by research and help the profession uphold its boundaries. Most nursing theories consist of four concepts which are the patient, the environment, health, and nursing. Each patient is at the center of focus and they have the right to determine what care will be given to them using informed

In contrast, System Theory focuses on the emotional state of people in the family unit. Its focal point is entails individual's emotional state, and how it affects the rest of the family and society. It states that a family is a group of related elements, who interact in pattern and have boundaries. The family system acts as a whole, but each of the members has their rules and behaviors that need adherence. Members of the family are free to form sub systems within the family or with other members of society (Rabstejnek and
Systems thinking is the capacity to see the master plan and to recognize patterns as opposed to conceptualizing change as segregated events. System thinking requires the other four orders to empower a learning organization to be figured it out. Additionally system thinking demonstrates that there is no outside that the reason for your issues at a piece of a solitary system.
The purpose of this paper is to provide an introduction, purpose, and rational for selecting a nursing theory. I will describe the theory by identifying the purpose, concepts/definitions, relationships/structure, and assumptions. I will use the Chinn & Kramer evaluation criteria to critique this chosen theory. Finally I will describe a plan for implementing the theory into my practice setting, identifying any barriers and challenges.
Nursing theory is the skeleton on which the profession and practice of nursing rests. It is a construct of concepts specific to nursing that shapes and guides nursing practice. Nursing theory can guide nursing practice by giving a particular focus to nursing practice (Algase, 2015). Nursing theory provides the foundation from which from which evidence-based practice arises. It is nursing theory that promotes best nursing practice whether it has to do with scholarship, education, literature, and/or bedside nursing. Further, nursing theory guides nursing practice by providing a wellspring of best scientific information whereby nurses may glean pertinent data in order to critically think, thereby implementing evidence-based practice for positive patient outcomes (Clement, 2015). In the paper, nursing theorist Dr. Betty Neuman and her systems model from the grand theory category will be used for discussion. Dr. Neuman’s theory will be discussed relevant to four different sections in this paper: 1) The importance of nursing theory, 2) Summary of the selected theory, 3) Application of specific nursing theory to selected profession nursing practice area (i.e. Education, Leadership, Informatics, Healthcare Policy, and Nurse Practitioner), and 4) the Conclusion.
A system is a set of interrelated parts. Systems theory assumes that a system must be understood as a whole, rather than in component parts. It is a way of looking at the world where all the objects are interrelated with one another. Many family systems are addressed in the movie Little Miss Sunshine.
Healy stated “the original proponents of general systems theory used biological terminology to explain client needs, situations and the purpose of social work practice” (2005). The term that is applied for systems theory is for all systems in general. All systems have boundaries within which both physical and mental energy is exchanged. There are two types of systems that this applies to. Closed systems have no interchange across the boundaries whereas open systems have permeable boundaries or guidelines but there is also some room for movement, within reason.
The Theory of Goal Attainment was developed by Imogene King in the early 1960s. It describes a dynamic, interpersonal relationship in which a patient grows and develops to attain certain life goals. King’s concepts are essential in aiding nurses in the nurse-patient relationship. She developed a general systems framework where the framework refers to the three interacting systems -individual or personal, group or interpersonal, and society or social.
This paper is a systematic presentation of nursing theories based on literature review. The purpose of this paper is to describe how nursing theories are applied in administrative practice. It will help to generate further nursing knowledge. Nursing theory can help patients, managers and other healthcare professionals to recognize the unique contribution that nurses make to
Systems thinking is a method of thinking that looks at the interconnectedness between different elements rather than a linear cause and effect approach and sees patterns of change rather than fixed “snapshots”. In essence it is a view on the “whole picture” (Anderson, R 1994).
Nursing theories have the ability to provide a framework and guidance that is necessary in achieving a higher level of nursing care. Therefore, implementation of a nursing theory needs to be integrated in the facility’s nursing process. The blue team strongly believes the Virginia Henderson’s Need Theory will lead to better patient health outcomes and create an environment for healing. Virginia Henderson understood that the patient is the most important member of the healthcare team. Nurses are responsible for identifying patients’ needs and determining the best method to address those needs. Nursing Theory, 2016, explains Henderson’s viewpoint, “The nurse has the responsibility to assess the needs of the patient, help him or her meet health needs, and provide an environment in which the patient can perform activity unaided” (para. 9).
System thinking is the process of understanding how things influence one another within a system. Russell L. Ackoff, Dr. W. Edwards Deming, and Peter Senge’s define, think differently, and have different approaches of system thinking.
System theory helps look at the various system a client may be a part of and see how the systems influence a person’s behavior and thoughts. System theory evaluates a person in the environment. Roberta is with depression, but her system help contributes to her depression. Roberta’s family system is going through the death of a loved one and responsibility of care has been bestowed to Roberta with little help. Roberta’s housing system is increasing in rent causing money stress, and her not being able to be with her support system due to financial stress. Roberta is isolated from the systems that help with her mental health due to money restriction but is reluctant to move to less expensive housing because she would be leaving her community. Roberta is involved in the community by being on the Board of Directors of the City Library, and she says that it gives her pleasure in involvement. To make sure Roberta’s recovery, there is work to fix barriers with her
