Impact of Participating in the VITA Program at UMD
“Take a minute: look at your goals, look at your performance, see if your behavior matches your goals.”- Kenneth H. Blanchard, The One Minute Manager. The first thing I learned while taking BMGT 398A was to set goals for my performance at the beginning of my internship, and reviewing them throughout the semester to make sure I was working toward meeting those goals. Participating in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at the University of Maryland was extremely beneficial to me. Being a team leader in the VITA program allowed me to not only apply what I have learned in business courses, but it also helped me expand my teamwork and customer service skills. Likewise, the VITA program has helped many students around the country.
The best part of participating in the VITA program was that I finally got to use the material I learned in Taxation of Individuals (BMGT 323) and completed tax returns for people from different nationalities, states, income levels, and marital statuses. Before I took the course, I had no interest in taxation. After completing the course, I had a much better understanding of taxes, and why people hate them. Even though I still did not like taxation, I decided to become a VITA volunteer because I thought it would give me real-world experience and also help my resume. I did not expect, however, that I would really enjoy completing tax returns and getting to know the other volunteers.
