Impact of Social Media on Relationships Does social media help us communicate effectively? Social media has created an epidemic of worldwide online communication among users. Users can communicate through a variety of social media outlets, such as but not limited to Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram; Facebook is the largest of the social media sites, with about 92% of users (Hampton, Goulet, Rainie, & Purcell, 2011, p. 3). These tools are used to socialize and stay in contact with familiar faces and family members to compensate for either lost time or long distance by the sharing of personal information, ideas and pictures. Social media outlines what users chose to show publicly online to the people they choose to accept as friends, producing false perceptions and fabricated relationships. From the first appearance of the first social media site, social media has created a prolonged frenzy that has transformed and adapted itself into an immense part of our daily use. The extensive use of social media, with all things, comes with a price: the negative side effects of relationships among friendships as well as the harmful effects to the users. The evolution of social media has progressed into an immense part of our daily lifestyle that has hindered our real life relationships into unengaged relationships that are filled with miscommunication.
