Social Media's Impact on Youth Culture Social media seems like an opportunity to reach out to more people, but how does it really influence the lives of youth, specifically teenagers? Social media sites open up a door to new people, places, and advertisements. This content does not always show innocent material, and these people do not always provide an appropriate message. It is reasonable, therefore, to question whether social media's "social" aspect is worth the damages it may cause. Certainly, social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., have made it easier to communicate, but these sites can have a negative impact on youth culture by increasing exposure to harmful content, limiting verbal interaction, and subjecting them to cyber bullying and peer pressure. To begin with, teenagers have become obsessed with social media. How many likes can they get on a picture? How many comments can they receive on a post? The constant use of social media has made exposure to harmful content effortless. For example, it is unlikely that social media sites regulate every source of content they acquire, so it is impossible to know what shows up on a teenager's screen. Preadolescents between the ages of 9-15 primarily use social media websites as a portal to communicate with past friends, find new ones, and to post about their day. However, the use of these sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube etc. can put young kids at risk of being bullied online, stalked by predators and pedophiles, and subjected to inappropriate pictures and videos. The truth is today youths lack the basic understanding of the dangers that lurk within social media, and therefore should not be allowed to use them until they can fully comprehend all the risks attached to using these sites.

Since teenagers learn from direct observation and experience, it is a huge problem when they witness things on social media that concern sexist, racist, or homophobic content. Many teenagers even say that they have an addiction to social media. Teens who have had bad experiences online or who do not use social media on a regular basis said that they have a stronger urge to stay away from the internet. Even though there are many negatives to social media there are some positives as well. NickMcGillivray who is affiliated with the website, TurboFuture wrote the article, “What Are the Effects of Social Media on Youth.” In his article, he states, “There are many positive aspects, but there are equally as many dangers that come with the use of sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Pinterest, Google +, Tumblr, Instagram, gaming sites, and blogs” (McGillivray). In this statement, he makes it clear, that social media has both positives and negatives. Life at home is normally peaceful until my mother shouts “Switch of that television and do something more constructive”or“No phones at the table,”or“switch off that laptop and get some good night sleep.” My little brother is always watching cartoons on television or playing video games while I spend most of my time on the laptop or on my phone twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Instagram or on blogs, or Youtube or any other social media website having a portal for good entertainment and communication of trending events. My mother always says we shall spoil our eyes or become fat and lazy. She always goes on and on about how she used to play a lot of outdoor games as a child and how they are important for the growth and development of children.

In today's generation there is this big attachment to social media and digital devices from teens, and in their opinion social media has made a negative impact on their lives. Teenagers today look to social media as an outlet to express themselves and from my personal experience, as a way to connect with their friends or to even keep in touch with my family members who may not live in the same area.
