The purpose of this essay is to analyse the impact of tourism whilst focusing on how different organisations or bodies are making tourists aware of the effects tourism can create. Tourism has a wide ranging impact on the host nation ranging from environmental to economic, tourism makes up large percentages of certain countries total GDP. Amongst normal tourists there is a lack of awareness when it comes to the impact that their holiday has and subsequently the consequences of travelling to certain destinations. Organisations such as governments, NGO’s and other relevant organisations are looking for ways in which the general public can make more informed decisions before deciding on what holiday they would be choosing. This essay will be using case studies and examples from official sources in order to analyse the issues faced by host nations and what is being done to ensure that holidays can remain a viable, sustainable option for economic growth. Whilst looking at these issues it is important to understand what is being done to reduce the impacts of tourism. The importance of tourism cannot be understated, as the source of income provided by tourism is vital for many regions and countries. The significance of tourism is seen as “an activity essential to the life of nations because of its direct effects on the social, cultural, educational and economic sectors of national societies and on their international relations.” (Manila Declaration on World Tourism,1980).
