Impact of External and Internal Factors on the Four
Functions of Management
External and internal factors such as globalization, technology, innovation, diversity and ethics can greatly impact the four functions of management. Functions such as planning, organizing, leading, and controlling can be influenced by these different internal and external factors since organizations need to ensure that they are addressed properly for business success. In addition, knowing the external and internal factors help organizations in identifying the business risks that exist in the environment in which they operate. This paper will focus on United Way, a non-profit community-based organization that was initially found in communities, large and small,

In addition to incorporating technology to manage multiple account funds, United Way is developing new technologies to garner donor contributions. Donations are the economic capital United Way relies on to provide quality services in their respective communities. Thus, United Way must be creative in its pursuits to compete with other nonprofits for this income stream. One viable solution was the creation of the United eWay Consortium. The consortium, founded by Phoenix’s Valley of the Sun United Way, allows participating United Way agencies to create customized Web sites for online pledging. This system eliminates the use of paper pledges and makes donation tracking effortless for both United Way organizations and gifting firms (Wallace, 2001).
Cash donations are not the only gifts needed by United Way to meet its organizational goals. Human resource donations or volunteers are a significant portion of the
The organizations objective is to target multiple audiences and the programs structure is important to separate the different groups they support. The United Way is a non-profit organization that has a team that works hard to find donors for the list of agencies they support. Typically a non-profit organization choses agencies that get little to no help from the local government. United Way (2016) This is accomplished by achieving measurable results through strategies that focus on community systems and resources - and by focusing on funding programs that achieve outcomes in three select impact areas: Education, Basic Needs, and Income. In most cases United Way reaches out to local businesses and major
Management: The capability of the management team and the leadership styles employed by managers will also have a major impact on the morale of staff (and volunteers in a non-profit organization) and organization culture. More contemporary forms of management involve workers in decision making processes and trusting that, although managers and workers have different viewpoints, they largely benefit by working together to achieve the business objectives.
The United Way of America and United Way International are part of a federation of nonprofit organizations formed by caring people to serve the needs of their communities. They bring neighborhoods together and facilitate measures toward making a difference to better the world. They have over 1,300 local United Ways in the United States and over 3,000 United Way organizations operating in 45 countries. They raise funds and distribute them to the most effective local service providers, build strong alliances, and coordinated volunteer support among charities. An obstacle that United Way needs to overcome is how many people want to have their donation used in a specific manner. Some people are not interested in giving their

Human service agencies have limited funding and rely greatly on donations. This may make it difficult for human service organizations to obtain necessary technology that will improve service distribution and eliminate the barriers that cause ineffectiveness. TechSoup is a non-profit organization that provides various software applications at a vastly discounted price. “TechSoup is a nonprofit with a clear focus: providing other nonprofits and libraries with technology that empowers them to fulfill their missions and serve their communities. As part of that goal, we provide technology products and information geared specifically to the unique challenges faced by nonprofits and libraries” (TechSoup, 2009). Funding is a barrier most human services organizations face because funding is limited and competition to receive
The Udall S.U.N Club is an amazing organization that focuses on the community’s needs. Every first Saturday of every month they meet in a local spot in our town and cook a community breakfast for the whole town. This organization is a non-profit organization because every penny they make goes into the groceries they get once a month to feed the community. Their mission statement includes “serving Udall’s needs” and that is exactly what they do each month. I have had an amazing opportunity to be able to provide my services to this amazing organization for the past few months and it has been an eye-opener to see how these people dedicate their time and hard work to see a smile on someone else’s face. I have learned so much through this organization.
United Way’s past strategies that leadership has tried in the past was trying to raise money through as many clients as possible. Brian Gallagher currently the CEO has made a dramatic change in the company’s approach. Brian established new membership’s standards to enhance the level of accountability. He changes the company’s image of just fund raising to doing what matters in the community. Brian believes this will lead to less finger pointing about where is the money donate going to and this will be proof. The past strategies were successful because of record reaching donations that United Way has once reached but like all things must evolve in order to survive.
I chose to complete a fundraiser with The Helpers Organization, which is a nonprofit information and referral program located in Norfolk, Virginia. The Helpers Organization was founded in 2008 by Antwan Staton, as a 501(c) (3) non-profit. It provided utility bills assistance, career programs, and personal growth workshops to the less fortunate people in the Hampton Roads community. They are also a referral program, which provides assistance on a case by case basis. Their utility program is to help clients on a one time basis. After the client receives the Helpers Organization assistance they are encouraged to recover from their situation, without further assistance. However, The Helpers Organization can refer the client to other resources, if necessary. The Helpers Organization primary goal is to help the community of Hampton Roads, by encouraging them to do better with little assistance.
The year of 1887 marked the beginning of United Way, which originated as Denver’s Charity Organization Society and expanded over 1,000 Community Chests in the late 1940’s (Dess, Lumpkin, Eisner, & McNamara, 2012, p. C19). Then in 1974 their campaign, in America and Canada, exceedigngly raised over $1 billion dollars; thus, causing for the creation of the United Way International so that many countries around the world may have the ability to construct similar organizations that will benefit their nations (Dess, et al., 2012, C19). United Way’s business consist of attracting large companies and
Indeed, this significant task necessitates the significance of organizational or management leadership in the financial performance of the minority, women-led non-profits in comparison to non-profit organizations that are led by males. Even though strategic planning is one of the key factors involved in organizational leadership, it is also essential to consider other factors such as the corporate culture, the dynamics of the management group, and the manner in which the strengths and expertise of management is vital in organizational effectiveness (Schein, 2010). Therefore, the proposed study investigates the importance of organizational leadership as a vital factor in resolving the organizations’ dismal performance, e.g., the management for socio-economic education, and workforce development organizations in Philadelphia may consider conducting environmental scanning procedures such as SWOT Analysis in order to determine the opportunities available for maximizing the organizations’ effectiveness regarding the provision of service deliverables.
The Women in Transition program is in need of donations for their clients because the women do not have the money to get items such as shampoo, conditioner, feminine products, and food items. After conversing with my supervisor, she believes it would be beneficial to the program to get more donations and spread the word to further towns. Currently the program has a few individuals and programs that donate, but every year they are short and do not have enough items for all of the clients. By networking in other towns and to other companies the agency is hoping to receive more items to provide to all of the clients. I will be asking for donations from different companies and communities in order to receive more items. I am also hoping to receive enough donations so the client may be able to obtain items twice a year.
The four functions of a manager are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. These are key elements that managers must understand to run a successful organization. I will view each concept as well as their roles to acknowledge how these functions have been related to my personal experience in the work environment. Behind the scenes of a manager, they spend an equal amount of time planning so that he or she can successfully achieve the leading and controlling functions. These functions are standard for any industry that is striving to maintain a strong organization. While reviewing this paper, try to think of the four functions as a method that is established to build on each other. The four functions must be performed efficiently, and when done correctly, an organization will reap the accomplishments from a well-defined plan. My own experiences of how the four functions operate illustrates that each role requires a manager to devote time and patience in order to ensure that the main principles are achieved.
There are four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading and controlling. The four basic principles of management found in all businesses and corporations. Management is a process designed to achieve an organization's objectives by using its resources effectively and efficiently in a changing environment.
“Management is the planning, organizing, leading, and controlling of mankind and other resources to achieve organizational goals efficiently and effectively (University, p 4 2011)”. The greatest achievement of an organization is to provide goods and services that customer’s value. The managerial department of an organization has the power to determine the performance of the employee’s, which directly affects the quality of the service or product that is being supplied to the customer. “Managerial tasks are essential for effective management, which involves planning, organizing, leading, and controlling (University, p 6 2011)”. Planning is the process of identifying the suitable goals of an organization and how they will be implemented in the company. Organizing is the procedure that determines the departments of an organization. When departments have been established the next step is to decide who will work best at a particular job. The development of organization inside a business will form the organizational structure for the company. “Leading is the ability to inspire and organize individuals to work as a team to complete the goals of the business in an efficient and effective manner (University, p 9 2011)”. Controlling is being able to assess the procedures of a company and eliminate or change any strategy plans that are not showing high- performance levels. Controlling may consist of monitoring
