Introduction Tourism is one of the largest industries in the world, but can easily be affected by several issues ranging from economic and political issues to safety and security concerns. Health issues are closely related to safety concerns, which can have a major negative impact on tourism. A current health issue that is affecting the tourism industry in the US, Caribbean, and Latin American countries is the Zika virus. The Zika virus is spread by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquitos. It can be spread from a pregnant woman to her unborn fetus, which can result in microcephaly, along with other birth defects. Zika can also be contracted by having sex with an infected partner or by a blood transfusion. Currently, there is no treatment or vaccine to prevent being infected with the virus. According to the CDC, the best prevention method is to do everything possible to prevent mosquito bites. Current Impacts of Zika on Tourism The Zika virus has already shown a decrease in tourism in Florida, and also in Caribbean and Latin American countries. In South Beach, Florida, which is a “Zika zone”, there are many business owners who are worried about future economic fallout. The rise in confirmed cases of Zika has resulted in a higher percentage of concerned travelers. Local business owners have reported guests calling and cancelling hotel reservations (Luscombe, 2016).
