Impaired driving has become a large problem nationwide. Texas leads the nation in number of DWI related accidents. Furthermore, among the cities in Texas, Dallas is the highest ranking in overall DWI related deaths. Our community needs to help prevent this problem by spreading awareness, intervention methods, and educating the public. We strive to bring awareness to the problem of drinking and driving in our community by hosting: Uber ‘n’ Out. Uber ‘n’ Out will be an event hosted by Uber in affiliation with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDot) and the Dallas Police Department. Our plan is to spread awareness to the alternatives of driving impaired. Uber is a smart choice to make when having a night out. Our event will show people

The facts are plain and simple, that alcohol and driving do not mix. About three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol related crash at some time in their lives. Every single injury and death caused by drunk driving is totally preventable. To curb this national travesty, concerned Americans need to examine the problems, the effects, and the solutions to drunk driving. First of all, America has had a problem with drunk driving since Ford perfected the assembly line. Alcoholism is a problem in and of itself, but combined with driving can have a wide range of effects. The consequences of this reckless behavior can include a first time DUI or licenses suspension; a small fender bender, or worst of all a deadly crash. Most
“In the hands of an impaired driver, a vehicle becomes a murderous weapon.” ( ) Everyone can think of someone who has driven impaired, or even maybe you have done it yourself. The fact that one can think of someone who has driven impaired is a problem. Too many people are getting behind the wheel after drinking, smoking; or are not paying attention while they drive. Impaired driving continues to a problem although strides have been made to make a difference. There are many different types of impaired driving, each that have their own consequences. These types, and consequences will be explored in this essay.
People in the Houston area, and throughout the state of Texas, are commonly arrested for suspicion of drunk driving. In fact, the state’s Department of Public Safety reports that there were 89,256 people arrested for driving under the influence in 2012 alone. Often, those facing such charges choose to forego hiring an attorney, and instead handle their legal issues on their own. Even for those facing first-time offenses, however, it may be useful to obtain legal representation.
19. According to Zuckerman, which of the following people will have the MOST difficulty in their career or home relationships?
Drinking and driving is a serious public safety with over two million crashes involving alcohol each year and a cost estimated by the National Highway Public Traffic Safety Administration to be $114 billion (Bertelli, Richardson,545) Impaired driving has become a major issue in Texas because of the misuse or abuse of alcohol. For Example, in 2012, there were 7,649 driving while intoxicated arrests in Bexar County. Then an additional 2,938 arrests in July and October of 2013. Drunk driving in Texas is problematic for the fact that Texas is the second largest State; as a result, it can cause vehicular deaths and impede traffic flow.
In 2013, 10,076 people were killed in drunk driving incidents. Out of those people, 65% (6,515) were drivers, 27% (2,724) were passengers, and 8% (837) were non-passengers (“Drunk Driving Statistics”). Over half of those fatalities (67.1%) involved blood alcohol levels over .15% (“Drunk Driving Statistics”). The legal blood-alcohol content is .08%. Drunk driving caused 31% of deaths in car crashes in 2013 (“Drunk Driving Statistics”). In 2012, 402 people were killed by alcohol impairment in North Carolina (“Drunk Driving Statistics”). These numbers, though they seem astonishing, have been cut in half since 1991 (“Drunk Driving Statistics”). Even though the number of fatalities has been lowered, that number is not low enough. Most drunk drivers are repeat offenders. Lives are being taken because of the careless attitude of the drunk drivers. Drunk driving is selfish; those who commit this crime do not think about the extreme consequences of their actions. In North America it is estimated that 1-5 drivers has been drinking and 1 in 10 is legally impaired on any Friday or Saturday night (Root). Many groups, including MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), are fighting to stop drunk driving. Unfortunately, drunk driving cannot be stopped. People will always commit this heinous crime. The numbers may go down, but unfortunately there will always be a number. The only way to continually decrease the amount of lives lost is to increase punishments for drunk driving.
Alcohol has been around for years. There has even been a point in time when it was safer than water. As time passed the drink evolved and so did the problems that followed. Addiction, severe health problems, violence, rage, crimes, and even death have been the outcomes to those who fall victim to the beverage. Although the simple solution would be to just ban alcohol all together, I believe adding a system that puts a regulation that can help limit the negatives things caused by it.
Drunk driving is an epidemic that continues to have severe and life threatening consequences for those involved, if we simply take a few steps against drunk driving we can help decrease this epidemic.
In response to an estimated thirteen thousand people being killed each year in drunk driving crashes (Weir), the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles’ Campaign to Prevent Drunk Driving is proposing a project that will focus on four important methods in order to combat this terrible crime: require ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers to prove they are sober before driving; support law enforcement to discourage people from driving drunk; support the expansion of motor vehicle technology to determine whether or not a driver is above the legal limit of 0.08 before driving; and encourage a Drinking Driver Program that will educate those already convicted of a drunk driving on their alcohol choices. With the approval of the Head of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and an
There is a possible connection between the decline in the number of arrests for DUI and the emergence of shared-ride services like Uber. Uber is definitely supporting public safety by connecting sober drivers with intoxicated people. In the U.S, the average age of DUIs is between 21 to 35 years. Young adults (16-34) are taking the most rides with Uber. The company has already published an article titled “Rates of arrests for drunk driving decline in cities where Uber is present”. The article explains that every drunk driver who is replaced by a safe, professional and sober driver on the Uber platform represents a significant contribution to the well-being of a city. The article also claims a 10% decrease in the number of arrests for drunk
Texas traffic accidents leads the nation in car deaths. In some ways, the large number of crashes is to be expected; Texas is a very large state. However, the Texas death rate of 1.44 deaths per hundred million miles travelled also exceeds the national average of 1.28 deaths per hundred million miles travelled. In this proposal, I will provide accurate statistics of last year’s records and then provide a possible solution to reduce fatalities.
