I agree with the statement above about imperialism. Imperliasm is a policy of expanding a countries power. Some of the benefits that come about from imperialism is development of modern technology, increased education, and a stronger economy to name a few. According to Brower, D., & Sanders, T (2014) "With industrial resources, empire-builders had the capability to send their armies and officials across vast oceans and great deserts in pursuit of new conquests. Europe alone produced over 60 percent of world manufacturing, and together with the United States accounted for over 85 percent." Western empires in the nineteenth century advanced economy and factories.
The concept of imperialism is one that has pervaded nearly every major society or empire throughout human history. It seems to be a natural consequence of societies growing in size, power, and knowledge. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries vast changes occurred in Western Europe (and soon spread elsewhere) that spurred a new round of imperialism the likes of which had not been seen before. The changes were the industrial revolution that was taking place. Countries were rapidly advancing to industrial societies producing much greater quantities of goods at much lower costs. The goods produced ranged everywhere from cotton textiles to military machinery, all of which would play important roles in rounds of imperialistic expansion that
Imperialism is a factor that has transformed societies and nations over the course of history. In the past, nations such as France, Great Britain, Germany, and Spain have been categorized as “imperialistic” nations. These nations referred to advanced technology as power. The industrial revolution and increase in new technology gave them the idea to want to spread their ideas to other countries around the world. This involved taking over nations and building colonies to benefit the mother country.
Did you know the word imperialism is derived from the Latin verb "imperare", which means 'to command' and from the Roman concept of "imperium" (expansion). Imperialism was introduced in 1870 for the purpose of arranging footholds and trading posts on the coasts of Africa and China, exploring the New World, and settling down colonies in North and South America, before ending in 1914. The few leading nations were: United States of America, Great Britain, Japan, and Germany; and the prime developing nations were: Africa and China. With the background of imperialism, we still have this burning question: Was imperialism beneficial to developing nations? The answer is no, because it is important to realize, developing nations were stripped of their
Imperialism brought great new philosophies and inventions to underdeveloped countries that had yet to be modernized. For example, in Africa the amount of local war reduced, the average life span increased, and there was an economic expansion. Another example is in India where the third largest railroad was built.
Throughout the history of the world, imperialism has played a major role. Imperialism is one country’s complete domination of the political, economic, and social life of another country. Imperialism has many positive and negative effects. The Age of Imperialism is considered 1800 - 1914. During this time Europe became a major world leader. European countries set up colonies all over Africa, Latin America, and Asia, and encouraged their citizens to populate them. European imperialism boosted Europe’s economy, and made them a world power. Imperialization had an entirely different effect on Africa, Latin America, and Asia. People of these countries were mistreated, they lost their culture, land, and self respect. The negative effects of
“Imperialism is the policy of extending rule over an Empire or nation, or to take control of a colony or settlement.” (Dictionary, 2017) It has been responsible for transforming many nations and cultures in positive and negative ways. The Aztec society for example was affected by the Spanish in terms of its government, trade and economy.
Imperialism may improve lives for some people, but still made the world worse than better because there was terrible work conditions for the workers, native religions and cultures were ignored or destroyed. The workers of the factories were almost like slaves. They did not get paid almost at all and many were injured or died. The native religions were disappearing because of the powerful European countries. Along with the native religions, The languages, governments, and others were deserted or destroyed. All of Africa was changed forever and Europe did not even care about what they were doing.
According to the content section of this chapter Imperialism, means, “the subjugation, domination, and exploitation of almost the entire globe to the economic and political needs of one region (Europe), a development unprecedented in human history." To a neutral viewer this may appear like a beneficial idea. During the 1800s and early 1900s, Imperialism was seen as a benefit to some and others did not see it as this. Many European nations such as Great Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, as well as some other nations were gaining land. Many people had opposing views regarding imperialism. Those who were in favor of imperialism often argued that it was beneficial based on nationalism, economic gains, the fervor missions of the Christians,
Imperialism is described in The American history as a “The quest for colonial empires”. This was something new for the newly developed country, The request for more natural resources was at its peak, with countries like Britain, Germany who have practised imperialism and has succeeded in expanding its power and influence the United State was more than eager to get into this river that seems to cough out silver and gold. At first, most Americans viewed this as a positive Expansion because it will help spread the American way of life such as democracy. However, this idea was not fully explored by the Americans, they headed into a battlefield with weapons and crafty strategy, but without knowledge of what the war is about and a possible side effect on not just the U.S. Do Americans in today's worldwide imperialism as a positive idea or negative?. Imperialism is viewed by many an immoral act even if its initial reason was thoughtful, suppression of the American way of life and the after effect is a stain on the nation that way never be wiped out.
Imperialism would be defined as “a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force” (Google). America is a perfect example of a country that imperialized in history. Imperialism was a great benefit for the U.S., but on the other hand, a huge burden for the Latin American countries. America intervened in Latin America for economic and political advantage. America made a ton of money in Latin America in the form of fruits that could be grown in Latin America, but not in America. Latin American countries were too underdeveloped, as in they weren’t industrialized and hadn’t imperialized, so they couldn’t possibly handle the military force of America. This allowed the U.S. to come in and basically bully the Latin American countries because they couldn’t retaliate. There weren’t many negatives for the U.S., except for social backlash from countries like Nicaragua or Costa Rica.
Imperialism is defined as a policy of extending a country 's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. Countries during the Industrial Revolution wanted to imperialize due to social, political, and economic reasons. As early as the mid 1800’s, the European countries craved the idea of power and conquering new lands in order to obtain resources/raw materials. They took over Africa, the Ottoman Empire, India, and Southeast Asia due to this as well as for their convenient location. They believed that the more land one owns, the stronger the country would be. Although some can argue the fact that imperialism had a detrimental effect because these countries lost their culture and independence, the end result of this was definitely more positive than negative both short term and long term. These countries would not be as thriving today if this had not happened. European Imperialism in parts of the Middle east, Africa, and Asia had more of a positive impact on the world due to education, modernization, healthcare/sanitation, and more trade/resources used.
Imperialism is the domination of a weaker country by a stronger country. For instance Britain dominated India and China in the mid 1880s to the beginning of the 20th century. Imperialism has had both a positive and negative effects on the countries involved. Britain was imperialistic for many reasons, it could dominate because it had the technology and power to do so. They also needed land to acquire raw materials for growing markets.
“Do the benefits of imperialism outweigh the costs?” Yes. Imperialism is the best for the country. The main reasons that the power of imperialism is important for the United States is because of the land and resources that each place has, money, and the language and government. “The policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries.” (Dictionary Collins, English 2016) this definition of imperialism describes why it was crucial for the united states to imperialize other countries.
Imperialism is atrocious and should not be allowed. It is the death of native people and their culture. It is selfish and goes against the ideal of humanity. Lastly, imperialism leads to even more conflict and war. Thus, imperialism should not be used as a form of expansion.
Imperialism is when a country gets control of a different country for different reasons such as getting Political power, Economic power. Sometimes the people who imperialize a country don’t want to have power, but explore the country for medicine, or to spread their religion to natives who lives in the country. The effects of imperialism were positive in the six different countries (China, Congo, India, Kenya, Madagascar and Nigeria) that were imperialize and the results of the cause were mostly good effects that help these countries to be better. The effects of the European imperialism on Africa and Asia were economically positive because Europeans helped Africans/Asians utilize the natural resources for better use. It was also socially positive
