How do you rely on family traditions and personal experience when you become ill and/or when you care for an ill family member?
As a child, my family believed that lots of loving care, plenty of rest, increased liquids, and chicken soup cured any ailment, and for the most part it worked. As an adult, not much has changed. When my family is ill, I rely on my personal experience and implement the same loving care, sufficient rest, increased fluids, and faithful chicken noodle soup that I was given when I was ill. While I know that the chicken noodle soup doesn’t necessarily cure the illness, it certainly warms the heart.
What do you think could be challenges to applying evidence-based practice in nursing care?
As a novice nurse I will have limited clinical experience, and since one component of evidence-based practice involves clinician expertise, I will have some difficulty applying this practice to my nursing care. However, through my education, I will be introduced to research, patient data, clinical experiences, and patient preferences and values, which will allow me to gain valuable knowledge, proficiency, and experience that will allow me to implement evidenced based practice into my nursing profession.

What areas will you need to strengthen to apply critical thinking?
As a student, I am constantly having to view my studies with objectivity, analyze and evaluate a given task using critical thinking, and come up with a solution. Effective communication is one area I need to improve on. Since I have been a stay-at-home mom for the last 13 years, I have had limited experience with business and professional dialogue, and therefore, I am out of practice professionally communicating with
Many people have many different definitions of a family. Some include family as the people they live with, some include their entire extended family, and some include friends, neighbors, coaches, and teachers. According to the Vanier Institute (2013), a family is “a combination of two or more persons who are bound together over time by ties of mutual consent, birth, and/or adoption” (para. 2). Whichever way you look at it, families often play a major role in life. It only makes sense that when a person begins to go through a drastic change in life such as illness, the family will be involved. This is why it is important that nurses learn how to provide suitable client and family centered care. They can do this by following the four
Within this essay Evidence based Practice will be identified and the significant effect it has on the nursing profession, barriers will also be explored in the implementation of Evidence Based Practice.
Think back to when you were a child and you became ill. All you wanted was the protection and guidance of your mother to take care of you. If you had older siblings, maybe they were the ones that helped make you feel better. Even as we grow older, we rely on our family for support when we are not well. When a family member is ill, it is not just that one person that suffers. When an illness strikes a family member, it oftentimes includes the whole family to deal with the illness also. There are different approaches that a nurse can utilize when dealing with family nursing. Approaches include family as context, as a client, system and a component of society. In this paper, I will discuss where and how these approaches are utilized.
Implementing a project for a change requires patience and time. Presenting the issue to the staffs is not an easy task. There will be resistance and disagreement that the issue persists. According to Stevens, even though the evidence-based practices are embraced in the microsystem by nurses, there will be impediments in employing it into practice (2013). Showing the evidences and explaining the reason why the change is urgent ensure cooperation. Teaching the health care providers of the organization’s policy regarding restraint and the recommendation of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as well as The Joint Commission (TJC) will enhance compliance and improve patient outcome by providing a safe environment for the patients,
Emotional Support and encouraging involvement of family and friends- Listening to patient with undivided attention .Providing clear, timely and meaningful information regarding the illness. Providing enough information regarding the patient’s illness. Respecting and acknowledging the family and friends’ support in patient care and providing supportive environment.
The way I approach families with ill children will vary depending on the illness, its severity, time since the diagnosis, and expected life span of the child. The family’s ability to adapt to health stressors will depend on their resources and perceptions as described in the double ABC-X model. A second characteristic of families coping with illness stressors I found to be unique was that a health decline in one partner in a marriage is related to a decrease in marital quality. As a HSP this will be imperative to keep in mind, as having a strong parental subsystem will rely on both parents maintaining a healthy relationship despite illness. Ensuring the couple maintains a healthy relationship will be crucial for the children’s perceptions while their parent is battling an
We originally chose this theory because we believe family plays a huge role within the patient’s healing process. However, after research, we realized the theory was not directly liked to the patient but instead to the family as whole and their ability to deal with the disease process, stressor, or crisis that might emerge. However, the family’s adaptation or coping affects the patient's
Family is playing an important part in helping to ensure that patients are fit and following the advice of health care professionals. This is because the family is a foundation of support for everyone. At the same time, members can learn about what is impacting their loved one and what kind of procedures need to be followed. When this happens, there will be higher amounts of compliance as they will ensure that the patient continues to stick with their treatment protocol. (Saleeba, 2009)
In the case that an individual is ill the consideration of the entire family is desired. “Don’t take your happiness into consideration. Act for the greater
Chapter 4, page 94 has a quote of cultures and illness, “how a culture (LL) views a particular illness-with case and compassion or derision and scorn-can have a profound impact on how an individual copes with that illness (UL), which can directly affect the course of the physical illness itself (UR).” This quote honestly caught my attention. At first, I was thinking more of how in my family illnesses are handled. Speaking from personal experience, three years ago, I had to complete radiation and my immediate family did not truly want to believe it. I did not receive the support I needed, but I also live about 6 hours away from them, but the emotional support, I did not receive it. Everyone was in denial and kept saying everything is fine, you are all right, but of course I knew that was not the case
Here I would also like to take the time to address a more personal issue. Due to a string of serious illnesses throughout my family, including rheumatoid arthritis in my mother and diabetes in my father, a large amount of my time over the last couple of years has been committed to assisting my parents with dealing with these diseases. My mother, in particular, has some rather extreme and sudden pain attacks in which I must literally drop everything I am doing and help her with whatever she
There are three environments that are involved when it comes to human experience of illness. These three environments are seen, unseen, and storied. The seen environment would involve the environment around the person who is sick. This environment includes people like friends, family, and healthcare professionals. The attitude of these people help the patient be able to relax or get aggravated. In my experience the people around you have a satanical effect on recovery. For example whenever I was sick I felt
Spirituality is a factor when it comes to health and illness. Jesus Christ is the ultimate healer. If a relative does not live a religious life with the Lord, they are looked at as spiritually weak or ill. It is said if one does not believe or attempt a relationship with God, trials and tribulations will be coming there way. Religion is a key factor when it comes to health and illnesses. Prayers to the Lord will work in a way heal the problem that day or 15 years down the road. Patience is a key when talking to the Lord, also. Things he might do at that moment of the day may not be in your favor, but in the end, you will be rewarded.
The dynamics of the family can change, depending on who is ill. It can be all turned upside down when one of the major players in the family becomes ill and it can be very difficult to get use to this new situation. The routine that everyone had been used to can change, it is important for everyone to work together, communicated well, support each other and avail of any help from extended family members and support organisations.
Prayer - Studies have demonstrated that sick people recover faster when people pray for them then when no one is praying for them. This holds true even when neither group knows if people are praying for them or not leading some to conclude that the power of prayer is an independent power.
