The field of counselling, as a whole, has always interested me but still the field of Child Psychology and Developmental Psychology along with parenting styles has attracted me the most. The building blocks of the personality of an individual, the attitude a person holds towards different situation or other people in life, are placed at a very young age even when people are not aware of it. The child is a social being. In children behaviour occurs in the context of the family, friends and the school. Most of the problems are situation specific. Therapeutic gains made in one setting (example: the clinic) may not generalize into other settings (home or school). The field of counselling is getting much more importance nowadays, which was not the situation earlier. Previously, people used to think that if an individual is visiting a counsellor then he or she must be facing some sort of a mental disorder. But today, people are referring to a counsellor for even the slightest issues that they face. Every sector, be it educational sector or industrial sector or any sort of a work place has a provision for counsellors. Counsellors are consulted before taking up a career, to solve interpersonal relationships, to solve disputes among the couple, during pregnancy, to cure addiction of any sort, to overcome any sort of an incident which causes distress to an individual and pulls him or her back and disrupts the physical, mental and social well-being of an individual. I feel that counselling is an important field in today’s world. This is because people, irrespective of their age group, are under constant pressure which leads to excessive stress.
