Station 5 was the most frustrating. There was no definitive answer as there were statements that were true sometimes. The statements required more thinking as you had to plug in multiple numbers to answer the question. Throughout the different stations, I felt like I was able to make solid mathematical arguments because I could back up my answers to the simplest of explanations. It was easy to back it up as long as I could explain how I got to the answer. The stations that had definitive answers were easier to come up with an argument for because there was a logical explanation of how I got to the answer. The ones that did not have as much of a definitive answer were harder to come up with an argument for. Y-intercept is the point where the
Mark Zepezauer’s article, “MK-Ultra from the Book the CIAs Greatest Hits” discusses the psychology experiment conducted by the CIA, MK-Ultra. The MK-ultra conducted a study that used mind control on their participants. Zepezauer recounts the events of the CIA tries to defend their stance by claiming they used the method in response to the brainwashing from the Chinese that was happening in the fifties. He says that mind control practices took place prior to 1953, but became popular after the experiment. He continues to explain how the CIA would use drugs, including LSD, and test them on their patients that were unaware of what tests were upon them. Zepezauer reveals that multiple suicides also took place in response to the given substances. He deliberated how the CIA rented out apartments and used prostitutes in their study. They used them to slip the drugs into their client’s pockets and the CIA would look through one-way mirrors to see the client’s response. Once the auditors discovered this, the MK-Ultra shut down and renamed the MKSEARCH. Mark Zepezauer
In the debate entitled “Trump and North Korea: Brinkmanship or Belligerency?” both Matthew Kroenig and James F. Person deliberate where we are with nuclear war and evidently how close to a conflict we are with North Korea. Kroenig started the discussion, addressing his position via a three-prong approach—is North Korea a security threat? What’s the history/how did we get here? and how policy comes into play? Pertaining to North Korea being a security threat, his overarching argument was that although it isn’t the greatest threat, it is the most urgent one, as they are an up and coming threat to us with nuclear war, having around 50-60 nuclear weapons and ICBMs available. In regards to the history/how we got here and policy, it’s important to
Two Latinas and a baby were stopped by security while grocery shopping, because another shopper accused the dark-skinned women of kidnapping the fair-skinned, blue-eyed, blonde baby accompanying them. It was not until the fair-skinned, blue-eyed, blonde father of the baby refuted the accusation, that the women were released. My mother (who is from El Salvador) and my nanny (who is from Belize) were the two women and I was the baby. My mom and nanny would not have been publicly incriminated and shamed, were they fair-skinned. McIntosh’s article substantiates the ubiquity of white privilege. White people do not have to worry about being monitored while running errands or being pulled over because of their skin color. I agree with McIntosh’s point
In this article titled “Analyzing Arguments: Those You Read and Those You Write” goes over multiple strategies and examples to help you analyze the meaning and purpose of a specific argument and how to strengthen your own.
A lot of things can happen in the span of five minutes, and that showed true for the five minutes between when Booth entered the box and when he executed the final blow. Booth, after gaining permission, slipped quietly into the box and blockaded the door behind him. Earlier that day Booth had stashed a wooden music stand in the box for just that purpose. Booth then turned, waited, and watched the President for nearly four minutes. Sitting in his pocket was a .44 caliber, single-shot, muzzle loading percussion cap pistol and a knife. The handgun was his weapon of choice but if something went wrong, such as a misfire, the knife was there as a backup. Around 10:15 Booth decided to strike. The took out his handgun and walked closer to the President
Helper believes that the reason the Souths economy was bad, was because slavery had enslaved the South. He talks about how the South is very dependent and gets almost everything from the North. “We want Bibles, brooms, buckets, and books, and we go to the North; … we want toys, primers, school books, fashionable apparel, machinery, medicines, tombstones, and a thousand other things, and we go to the North for them all.” (For the Record, 417) Then, Helper gets to the point and explains that the reason for their poverty and bad economy, was because of slavery. The people of the South depended on slave labor, which is why they were not doing so well economy wise. If it wasn’t for slavery in the South, they would be “patronizing their own mechanics, manufacturers, and laborers” (For the Record, 418) instead of sending everything to the North. Another one of Helper’s arguments is that, the non-slaveholders believe anything the slaveholders tell them. That is why Helper believes the “South, woefully inert and inventionless, has lagged behind the North, and is now weltering in the cesspool of ignorance and degradation.” (For the Record, 419)
In the NBR article the main argument Thomas Beagle is trying to make, is that the newly introduced offence of “causing harm by posting digital communication (section 19)” is very wide and that it prevents or tries to prevent freedom of speech which may be of value to society. As an example he says that taking a photo of a politician receiving a bribe and posting it online can fit the criteria needed to commit the offense (whether it is true or not) with the penalty being up to three months in jail or a fine not exceeding $2000. He also says that some communications that causes harm may be of value to society, such as exposing criminal wrongdoings, which is not an available defence under the new offense. Due to this I would have to agree with
Over time, a change has occurred from the typical horror story to a violent and bloody legend. The original short story " The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow" is an example of a simple, yet mysterious fable in which Ichabod Crane acts as the protagonist. Ichabod becomes the victim of the feared headless horseman after believing the superstitious tales of this spirit preying in the night. The film that is supposedly based upon the tale provides a deceiving, yet compelling title of Sleepy Hollow, as one might assume that the film is a reenactment of the short story. The film and original tale differ in that the film has blood, gore and controversy while the story depicts a

Imagine a world that is so bleak and interconnected by not a voice, but a device in your hand. A world where people ignore the small affairs of life; a world where people just look down at a screen in their hand. This world can happen, it might be happening now, how would anyone know? In the year 2000, the author named Jonathan Coleman made an article in Newsweek called “Is Technology Making Us Intimate Strangers “it was about Jonathan Coleman’s thoughts on technology. This article uses a writing technique called the Toulmin Model of argument. The Toulmin Model is a seven-part writing technique that writers’, when writing an argument paper use to explain their claim to a reading audience. The seven parts of the Toulmin model are claim, stated
Like Sanchez’s article, Atkin covers the starving and abandoned pets and zoo animals that are a result of the economic crisis. The video depicts starving dogs with the facts of the article floating over their heads. The article is essentially a transcript of the video.
My honest thought on argumentation prior to starting this course were that argumentation was going to very easy. I simply thought that it would consist of arguing with someone back and forth trying to get my point across. But i was wrong, base off my pro/con speech and the few chapters that we have covered i've realized that argumentation is more complex than what i had expected it to be. There is different ways that someone can go about when state their claim using Rogerian argumentations style or using Aristotle’s rhetorical appeals or other forms of argumentation styles. After my speech i realized that a clear and controversial topic is needed in order to see both sides of the claim. Aside from a topic research is very important it must be credible the more credibility one has the better are your chances of persuading the audience. Now i see argumentation as a process of reasoning that must consist of organized information and credible sources.
The article by Michael Binyon and the cartoon by Tom Toles make the claim that President Obama did not deserve to win a Nobel Peace Prize at the beginning of his presidency. Toles and Binyon share similar viewpoint, so they approach the subject in similar ways. Both of the speakers describe President Obama’s lack of accomplishments at the time he received the award. They both appear to pose strong arguments about this subject; however, the article by Michael Binyon seems to be stronger than the cartoon. Even though both provide effective arguments about the topic, “Comment: Absurd Decision on Obama Makes a Mockery of the Nobel Peace Prize” seems to pose the strongest argument because Michael Binyon was able to develop his claim and effectively impact his audience using background information, evoking strong emotions, and comparing President Obama to deserving winners of the past.
Understanding and being able to speak a new language can only bring positive things. In addition to improving your resume, several studies claim that knowing more than one language makes you smarter, because you use parts of your brain that would otherwise be unused. In addition, if you are one of those who travel a lot, knowledge of other languages is vital for you to be able to get the most out of your travels. Having a second language is one of the most demanded requirements in the workplace, so today studying a language is no longer a whim, it is almost a necessity. Most medium or large companies have an international and not only local or national projection, so they need their employees to be able to communicate with people from
Once the Cas enzyme is selected (in this case Cas9), the gRNA and healing fragment built, these elements will be cloned into the basal viral vector to produce the HPV CRISPR-CAS9 mediated repair plasmid (HCCMRP). It is the hope that this vector once introduced into the epithelial cells with the aforementioned mutation will revert the Stk11 mutation as seen in the (figures 3-4 in appendix). The HCCMRP will be multiplied by PCR and sequenced to confirm the presence of all required components.
