It is important for students to take part in extracurricular activities. These activities help to impact the lives of the students and those around them, such as family and the community. Seow and Pan explain that, “Extracurricular activities relate to activities that are external to the core curriculum” (361). This means that they occur outside class time and a student does not get graded for participation. There are many types of extracurricular activities. Therefore, anyone should be able to join one of the activities. Ron Kennedy states, “Education outside the four walls of the classroom is an important part of every high school today. The educational experiences that occur outside of the classroom are extensions the lessons students …show more content…
Although these are valid concerns for parents, they must also look at the positive outcomes of letting their children join an extracurricular activity.
According to a recent article, “For many U.S students, an important part of secondary school experience includes participation in afterschool extracurricular activities” (Kennedy 38). This means that these activities are not a waste, but a part of education. According to recent academic achievement research, “Afterschool programs enhance the academic lifestyle by providing non-threatening remediation, support and most importantly enrichment” (Turner). They also help students to gain key skills that will improve academic studies and that they will need later in life. One skill that they will learn is time management. For a student to balance being in school, having homework and maybe even a job mastering time management is essential. Extracurricular activities teach teens that to be good and succeed at something the student must find time to work hard and be dedicated. Some coaches or directors even check participants’ grades to make sure they keep up with their school work. In this way, the students learn that if they want to continue to be a part of the activity they must manage their time wisely to get everything done, and this enhances their studies.
Poh-Sun Seow and Gary Pan state, “ECA participation
Extracurriculars are there for students to enjoy activities other than their academics, but it is also a way to shows that they can focus on education and outside life at the same time. Some students do not take school seriously enough. Coming to school might just be a way for athletes to participate in the sport they want to. Not every students has exceeding academic skills, however, anyone can succeed if they just try. Being able to multitask will behoove the students in the future. Undergraduates tend to separate their school and outside life. Older adults do this as well; but instead of school, it is work they have to worry about. During exam week, students will want to study and it will take away their eating and sleeping time. Eating and studying is a vigorous way to
When students participate in extracurricular activities they learn lessons and concepts of leadership, teamwork, organization, analytical thinking, problem solving, and time management. In high school if a student wants to do a sport or other activity they will pick the activity that they like and enjoy. This is the kind of decision making skill that could help determine the type of career path for a student. By participating in extracurricular activities youth can find something they enjoy learn to use this in a career. “Participating in certain extracurricular activities having to do with the field that the student is interested in could help them find a job. If someone is looking at a resume for a potential employee, and they see they have experience or interest in what they are looking for, they will be more likely to hire that person” (Massoni). Having been apart of a particular extracurricular activity can be a positive influence in a job resume. This will cause students to find a new ambition in a career. Even on college applications these activities will affect if a student will be accepted, and in some circumstances many activities can earn a student thousands of dollars in scholarships (Massoni). Extracurricular activities can benefit students in teaching them long term commitments. When youth participate in
Before I discuss why extracurricular activities should be a high priority in school funding, it is vital to understand what is being done and what could be done to achieve these results. One major way to certify that these organizations
With a regular schedule for all these students, everyone is expected to simply do the work at home, and come back to school to turn it in and receive more and do the same process over and over. But when there are other activities a child can be involved in, it makes routines have a slight change. Especially if these certain “activities” are being a requirement and not just an option because there are always students who never try new activities and miss out on opportunities. Therefore, students should be offered extracurricular activities in their schools because it gains skills and builds pride to be successful academically in Anaheim. In the documentary, “Mad Hot Ballroom” the director, Marilyn Agrelo, states that “the kids that are
Since Early College High School was founded in the year 2006, the school and its students have always been at disadvantage. The school has lacked several opportunities such sports, scholarship opportunities, etc. However, a topic that has been the spotlight of discussion amongst students over the course of eleven years has been the lack of extracurricular activities. This problem does not only affect students, but it rather affects faculty members as well. Although there has been a slow but gradual increase in solving this problem, this change has come forth at a lengthy rate. It has been 11 years since change has been prompted, and although the current students are benefiting from this change, there have been several generations of
In an article, an expert said ¨Although academic work is vital, these extra-curricular activities are also significant for students because they teach responsibility and teamwork¨(¨Reasons Why the School Day Should Be Shorter¨). Colleges
Jan Kievlen, Positive Climates for Learning Specialists at the York Region District School Board stated that, ""When parents remember why they are enrolling their child into a sport, it helps them to keep the focus on the development of the character rather than just ‘winning’. It also is important to keep the sport ‘fun’” (tvoparents.tvo.org, 2011). One may believe children play sports just to have fun in their free time, but it also has a positive impact on them. ““Children’s participation in organized extracurricular activities has been associated with positive short-and-long-terms outcomes”” (Guèvremont, 2011). Therefore, extra-curricular activities should be mandatory in a student’s life because it helps them gain new skills, exercise and is a stress reliever.
These activities include clubs, sports teams, and jobs. There are a few remedies to the problem however. One example is busses that have wifi so student athletes can work on homework while on their way to a sporting event (Hoffman). Another cure is that clubs and sports can meet before school (Hoffman). The challenges that are presented to the students who participate in after school activities have a great benefit. While participating in these activities, the students can learn how to manage their time. The idea of time management is a key life lesson that students can be taught by later start
Participation in extracurricular activities is considered an important part of a pupil's scholastic life. Activities include marching band, choir, robotics, Yearbook, Yes Club, and Cheerleading.
Extra curricular activities show how active a student is involved with his or her community.
Some of the extra-curricular activities I am involved in include Science National Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Amnesty International. These three particular activities are helping me shape the person I am today. The amount of work one has to put into these activities reflects the amount of work I will one day put into my future studies and work. In these extra-curricular activities I am expected to participate with my community outside of school. This has and will continue to help me be more social with others, be comfortable working in teams, improve my grades, and be informed about certain happenings.
I participate in multiple athletics and activities at Worland High School. Worland High School has a large array of extracurricular activities that they offer. From Key Club, to Football, to Debate, exedra. All these activities offer many opportunities for the students to participate in. There is a considerably large quantity of students at Worland High School who are involved in these extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities have a lot of benefits. I participate in extracurricular activities for many reasons , the three major ones are, they keep me busy, they are something that I love, and they keep me healthy.
Imagine what the world would be like if there were not extracurricular activities such as sports, student government, and other organizations. For example one such organization is the Boy Scouts which has produced many American leaders such as Gerald Ford, Donald Rumsfeld, and Robert Gates. That is just one organization that I would count as an extracurricular, just imagine what the world would be like if extracurriculars like sports teams, student government and other organizations did not exist. Sports and extracurriculars are important in the fact that they develop important intangibles, enable students to get jobs, and produce morally straight individuals.
So why are extracurricular activities important? Extracurricular activities shape how a person acts within him or herself, in the community, and their performance in school. Schools should highly encourage every student to be in some type of activity (Hollrah).
