Why do some friends have a special connection? In Willa Cather’s, My Antonia, many people have a bond but not like Antonia Shimerda and Jim Burden. Having met in their youth and knowing each others families. They have an emotional bond. Antonia and Jim share an enduring bond of friendly love. This includes a regard for family members, sharing life experiences, and always coming together at the end. Antonia and Jim share an enduring bond of friendly love including a regard for family members. Mr. Shimerda, Antonia’s father, died of depression. The Burdens have helped the Shimerdas stabilize their lives from Bohemia to America. Jim meets Antonia’s family and leaves the next day after catching yp with Antonia’s life. Jim realizes that a man’s life goes in a circle and, “ For Antonia and for me, this had been the road of Destiny; had taken us to those early accidents of fortune which predetermined for us all that we can ever be. Now I understood that the same road was to bring us together again.” (Cather 238) Jim and Antonia after catching up discovered that they both went in two different life paths. Jim wen to school and got married but had no kids, while Antonia did not go to school but got married and has eleven kids. Jim and Antonia are physically in different paths but destiny draws them together at the end. They will also meet up at the end when they have not met each other in twenty years. Jim and Antonia’s relationship is fate and is another reason why they have a strong bond. Antonia and Jim have an everlasting bond of communicative affection. Antonia and Jim have a strong bond due to them knowing each others family members, sharing events that occurred in their lives, and fate bringing them together. “Whatever we had missed, we possessed together the precious, the incommunicable past.” (Cather 238) Antonia and Jim are the only ones that know their past and their connection, and no one else can understand this strong bond that they
