The United States is full of opportunity, individual choice and freedom than any other country (Cline, 2007, pg. 9). It is outrageous to think that our medical care would not be considered the best of any nation. However, the United States quality and overall healthcare fall dead last in comparison to eleven countries. A country rich in opportunity spends more money on health care than any other nation has one of the poorest health systems (The Commonwealth Fund, 2014, pg.26 ). This spending on healthcare predates the 2010 Patient Protection, and Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) intent is to reverse the incentives that drive up the costs (Sultz & Young, p 33). According to a comparison made by Baribault, decent medical care is available in other advanced countries at lower healthcare costs than the United States.

The United Sates economy has been deemed unsatisfactory by its politicians and citizens alike. However, instead of attacking the problems that have been plaguing the American economy, Kensian and trickle-down economics are used as a bandaid for short term economic downturns. In order for the United States to improve its economy in a dramatic, longlasting way, major issues such as excesive health care costs, reliance on foreign fossil fuels, and illegal immigration and outsourcing must be faced and solved through dynamic, innovative methods.

Since the very beginning, health care has been one of the most debated topics in the United States. Healthcare was first offered during the late 1800s during the Civil War. In 1929, a more improved health care plan was developed in Dallas, TX. The Blue Cross organization was founded in 1932, which provided hospitals and doctors with discounts. During this time, those who were in the upper class had better access to health care insurance. After the Great Depression, the Social Security Act was passed and hospitals started offering private coverage in dozens of states. By the 1950s, the cost of healthcare doubled. Why is this? Healthcare in the United States is a constant struggle. For generations the country has been in heated debate over the best approach to this unsettling issue. While many changes have been made, none seem to be effective enough to please and serve the country effectively. No matter what course is taken there is always a group, or groups of individuals who are left out and underserved. Millions of American citizens are uninsured; this number includes all walks of life from children through the elderly. In order to overcome this devastating issue the American people have to come to a decision on how to care for all of our citizens so that no one is left out. In today’s society this has become an even more difficult task as we face an ongoing struggle within our economy, leaving many families in financial hardship.

A survey of 5,700 people released by the Federal Reserve reported that 46% of working Americans cannot pay an emergency expense costing $400 or more without borrowing money or selling their property (El Issa, 2015). It is important to recognize the different factors that contribute to the rise in healthcare costs as the healthcare industry is a vital source for job development and economic production. Although The United States of America invests billions of dollars in the healthcare system, it is still ranked as the most inefficient healthcare system among developed countries. Experts in the field broadly mention administrative costs, drug costs, and defensive medicine as the major contributors to this nationwide dilemma. To understand the growing issues facing Americans today, one must examine these three areas within the healthcare system in depth.

Paying nearly 2.6 trillion on medical related services (Silverman & Demak, 2011), the U.S continuously exceeds their financial budget each year, ranking them #1 for the highest healthcare spending in the world. Ironically, Americans are among the few who are not guaranteed medical coverage. For Americans healthcare insurance comes in many forms, some receive it through job benefits or government programs such as, Medicaid and Medicare, while others are among the many not financially covered at all. There are many potential issues arising from the U.S healthcare plan such as high insurance cost, unfair selection and denial of coverage, and high rates of uninsured citizens.

I have learned that health care insurance coverage is an important issue for all the people living in the United States. In 1915 and 1920 the State tried to coordinated government health insurance, however it never took place. In the 1930s the federal level tried to coordinated government health insurance and the same thing happen, it never took place as well. Later on in the late 1930s people who were able form a health insurance coverage so they are able to protect themselves and their family due to high cost out-of-pocket co-payment. In 1965 Social Security Act adopted Medicare and Medicaid to provide health coverage services for children and mother thought-out the United States. I realize that Medicaid is mainly for needy people to help them get the best health care and to educate them to live a long and healthy life.

I believe that it is extremely important for health care administrators to address any health care issues because they would possibly have an affect on the people of the community. It may not affect all of the people in a community but at least one or more. Any type of information that could potentially save a persons life is always important and no one should withhold that type of information. In my community of Franklinton, Louisiana the biggest health care facility there is the Riverside Medical Center. Riverside medical center is a Non-profit community hospital with 25-bed access and they provide a range of services with 24-hour emergency entrance. This is an independent company hospital. The services offered are women’s annual screenings,
