Despite the majority of Americans being monolingual, 43% of the nation believes it is important to learn a second language. Being bilingual has many benefits for the future. Knowledge of foreign languages can expand career potentials, help improve one's native language, and can aid opportunities to travel and experience new culture. Learning a foreign language is one of the most beneficial experiences for people in the future.

I am very fluent in Spanish now and I my young children are as well. So even speaking another language is helping us grow. Diversity in society helps us grow as individuals and opens our minds to different ways of life.

Most people who come from a family that is not from the United States of America or England do not know how to speak english. The language I first learned at home was Spanish because that's how I communicate with my family members. What motivated to to learn more about my target language is the culture behind the speaking language and the correct usage, not just the slang words. When I traveled to Mexico it helped me learn more about the language for example, in the way they use more formal words and high vocabulary words when communicating with someone. Another experience I had was when a man at the gas station didn’t know how to speak English and the cashier didn’t understand him. Since I understood what he was saying in Spanish I offered him my assistance and helped him as a translator.

One should learn a foreign language to be able to make more money. Being a bilingual worker , that person can make more money than the average person who can only speak one language. Suppose if someone come to a store , they need help , but they only speak Spanish . What will one do ? I chose to pursue a career in nursing career due to previous experiences at hospitals. When I was younger, I had multiple cases of hives. My parents would only know what it was called in Cantonese, but not in English. When we went to the hospital, we had to wait until a translator came because my parents felt more comfortable talking to someone who could speak in Cantonese with them. This meant the interpreter was the middle man between my parents and the medical team which would allow for more human error and communicate problems. Today, we live in a country where the people come from all over the country. Since not everyone speaks English, it is more beneficial to know multiple languages. Because all these people live in the same community, it would be difficult for those, such as immigrants, to excise actions such as calling a 911 operator for help or going to hospital in the event of an emergency. Growing up, my Cantonese speaking skills were able to improve and I was also able to learn Mandarin in high school. Being able to speak multiple languages will allow for me to talk to patients that only speak Cantonese or Mandarin without waiting for an available translator. Waiting for a translator could be for any amount of time, but within the waiting time an emergency could happen and lead to someone’s death.
