Top collegiate athletes should be able to get paid. Schools are making millions in ticket sales, selling jerseys and other venues that help out of school. However, college athletes make all the money for the college. College athletes should deserve to to get paid. “The college sports industry generates $11 Billion in annual revenues.”(Text 1, line 1) the college sports industry generates so much money, that they need to share the money and that it's selfish. Scholarship athletes should be getting paid.

After numerous scandals over the past several years of college athletes receiving improper benefits, the question has come up whether or not college athletes should be paid or not. College sports are a growing industry, and we have seen money destroy organizations, teams, and players in this industry.  The determination and motivation of college athletes supersedes professional athletes by their will to win; therefore, college athletes should not be paid.

In the Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia’s definition of “Amateur” it states, during the early 20th century “the American intercollegiate athletic system… adopted amateurism, claiming it developed competitors who were morally superior to professionals” (“Amateur”). Amateurism is the concept that athletes should compete without payment. Until recently, playing collegiate sports as an amateur was thought to be a noble calling. As time surpassed, college sports became a commercialized industry, generating billions of dollars in revenue. Since the establishment of the organization, the only money that has been offered to student athletes is in the form of a scholarship. The argument of whether or not the NCAA should pay its athletes has been debated for around 8 years now, and right when it seems like there may be a breakthrough another reason comes up for the issue to be put on hold. College athletic programs are multimillion dollar programs and the athletes who make this revenue possible are getting the bare minimum to make it by in these college programs. Last year the Texas A&M athletic program was at the top of the NCAA revenue list bringing in $192,608,876. A third of that revenue comes from ticket sales alone, which leaves the rest to television rights, licensing and other donations. In the NCAA there are 26 colleges which are bringing in over 100 million dollars in NCAA revenue (USA Today 1). But still, Horace claims that “there is a misconception that athletic programs in general are profitable and are making hand-over fist. While truly most operate at a cost to the institution”.

That is more than The National Basketball Association and The national Hockey League. With all of that money made a large portion doesn’t go back to the classroom. The NCAA states that paying college athletes would ruin the competitiveness of the the sport which doesn’t make any sense, because the NFL pays its players based on their rankings and performance. Suggesting that payment destroys the competition then the NFL is incredibly misinformed. If the NCAA paid its athletes the students would not have to add extra stress worrying about where they will get their money from. The NCAA does not allow athletes to make any type of money. For example, Donald De La Haye, was a kicker for UCF who was ruled ineligible for making money off YouTube. The NCAA may want to pay every single athlete, but that is not possible considering the amount of college students play sports. This is especially emphasized during March Madness or the College Football Playoffs. Fans will also come to see the games which the money made with seating will go to the NCAA. Coaches get paid millions of dollars per year while players receive nothing for putting their bodies on the line. For example, Mike Krzyzewski, who is the basketball coach for Duke University, is being paid $7.2 million per year. Being a college athlete is like a full time job. With debate on whether or not to compensate the college athletes in monetary terms due to the students’ sports talents help their various colleges to receive awards both rewards and cash money, it is important to look at criticisms of the National Collegiate Athletic Association with regards to the association’s advertisement deals of approximately more than a billion shillings profits yet no athlete is being compensated for his or her hard work. That according to Zimbalist (2013) is because the critiques are using the very developments to argue in favour of the payment of the student athletes since the opportunity for education and exposure to earn a professional contract is enough compensation since the cost of paying the student athletes would be too high.

Over the last few years college sports have gained immense popularity. Therefore college sports have generate millions of dollars for the NCAA and the university's. The players for the universities aren’t getting a cent of these profits. Hence why the NCAA should allow athletes to get a salary for their participation in sports. Others think that the athletes don’t deserve to be paid because of their scholarships.

As college in the U.S. gets more expensive on year to year basis, it seems to become more of need or a necessity for a student to get a good job. It almost as if colleges or the higher education system as a whole is taking advantage of students by constantly raising their tuition. At some universities there tuition has risen to nearly a quarter-million dollars for a four year education. College tuition has gone up 945 percent since 1980. It is almost impossible for the average day to day, four year college student to not come out of school without any type of debt at all. It is to the point now where the only people who do come out of college without any debt, are college athletes and the top tier of the students in their high school class,

College athletics are a part of everyone’s lives in some form whether it be watching ones favorite team or cheering on friends and family members. This is especially true in the US. These college athletes are taken for granted while they are playing this sport at a competitive level and also maintaining the academic qualifications required because many don’t understand or realize the time and effort these athletes put into their career. Therefore, college athletes should be paid for playing sports during their college career.
