Is Self-esteem important? “The strongest factor for success is self-esteem: Believing you can do it, believing you deserve it, believing you will get it.” (John Assaraf). Have you ever wondered about the importance of self-esteem in our lives, and the way to become successful? If we gain the confidence, it will make it easier to believe in ourselves. Success comes when we enjoy living our life in harmony, which is having a good career and healthy life. In order to have a good career, which is successful education, and a healthy life, everyone needs self-esteem in their lives to become successful.
The history of self-esteem had many movements through the last decades. In the text ‘ A Short History of Self-esteem, Carol Craig claimed that self-esteem had shifted through time. In 1965, Martin Seligman believes that “ World wars and economic depression did not create fertile territory for a focus on how people feel about themselves“(p.1). He illustrates that wars and economic depression didn’t create a focus point of how people felt about themselves. He explains that self-esteem includes the idea of doing well. In addition, in the late 1960s, self-esteem became a fashionable idea. Schools and parents were praising their kids on meaningless actions, regardless to their ages, they all get treated the same way. Their praising led their kids to be selfish and extremely difficult to work with. During this period of time, self-esteem was mostly being fashionable for people.

In the essay “The Trouble with Self-Esteem”, Lauren Slater is arguing that the theory of self-esteem should be banned. Slater states that “People with High Self-Esteem pose a greater threat to those around them than people with low Self-esteem”. Humans with low self-esteem humble themselves more and work harder to be noticed and to maintain the status quo of society. Slater stated that humans with high self-esteem were dangerous and posed a threat. Slater discuses facilities that could assist with humans who cope with self-esteem issues.
According to a 1993 study in the longitudinal consistency and change in self-esteem form early adolescence to early childhood by Block and Robbins, between the ages of 14 and 23 exists the potential for great changes in how the self-concept develops and is shaped. The study also concluded that more males increased their sense of self-esteem during this time than did females. After people approach the age of 30, most self-concepts remain relatively stable without significant conscious effort (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor 63). A realistic self-concept should change over time as it reflects the reality of current circumstances and previous experiences. The tendency, however, is to resist those changes and instead seek out others than confirm the self-concept. The powerful effect that
Most people face self esteem problems at different levels. At some point in life people face this problem without realizing it. In the essay The Trouble with Self-Esteem written by Lauren Slater starts of by demonstrating a test. Self esteem test that determines whether you have a high self-esteem or low self-esteem. The question to be answered however is; what is the value and meaning of self-esteem? The trouble with self-esteem is that not everyone approaches it properly, taking a test or doing research based of a certain group of people is not the way to do so.
Self confidence is the foundation of success, achievement, and happiness. Unfortunately, the foundation of self confidence can become shaky and unstable if someone that you look up to as a role model hurts your self esteem and courage. One of the biggest role models in my life used to be my first club soccer coach. He seemed brilliant, passionate, and willing to work with my team. This man soon became the complete opposite of what I hoped he would be. I soon realized that he was a two faced liar and one of the most awful people I have ever met. Little did my ten year old self know he would be the downfall of my self confidence and he would slowly destroy any passion I had for the sport I loved all with only a few words.
The concept of self esteem is widespread in life. When it comes to academics and extracurricular actives people associate high self esteem is necessary for success. Society makes promoting self esteem an important goal. With that in mind, it is surprising that only recently scientific literature began providing insight into the nature of development of self esteem.

Low self-esteem has been an issues with many people since before the 1970’s. This issue has gradually picked up since the 70’s and has progressed 37% in the last 200
During the 60s and 70s, the revolution of the enhancement of self-esteem came into existence into the United States’ society. Jean Twenge’s article “An Army One: Me”, she discusses how the forced instilling of self-esteem, especially in small children, has caused the current generation to develop narcissistic qualities. One would presume that by the promotion of narcissism, we would inevitably discontinue the promotion of self-esteem. However, self-esteem plays a vital role in humanity’s search for
Death of a Salesman, and research performed by the American Psychological Society (subsequently renamed the Association for Psychological Science) show how grades and self-esteem share a direct correlation. In Death of a Salesman Biff and Bernard both demonstrate how grades and self-esteem correlate. In Death of a Salesman, Willie Lowman’s son Biff fails math in high school, because of this failure. Biff loses his self-esteem and therefore is unsuccessful. However, in contrast, Bernard passes all of his classes and is successful. Research performed by the American Psychological Society also supports the theory that grades affect self-esteem. The counter arguments will also be discussed to provide a complete synopsis. The first point
As early as I can remember, I always excelled in my classes. I felt like at the time I was without a doubt an above average student. I often recall my instructor Mrs. Shek from third-grade saying, “Wow you are smart Jonathan”. Even my fourth-grade instructor Mr. William’s would often write comments on my essays like “Good job you outdid yourself”. My self-esteem skyrocketed early on, confident in my ability to excel; I felt I was ready to take on the world. My teacher’s comments had reminded me of a quote from an article I read called, “Brainology” by Carol S. Dweck. Dweck stated “In the 1990’s, parents and schools decided that the most important thing for kids to have was self-esteem.” (2) Its said that if we felt good about ourselves, we would be set. Little was known of the consequences of
Insecurity drills a hole into a person’s heart, minimizes their integrity, and accumulates as plaque build up, hindering any kind of future growth. Just as any human being’s growth is stifled by the insecurity within them, the United States as a whole suffers the same from its own tremendous amount of insecurity. This lack of acknowledgement of self-worth causes a ghastly chain reaction; people tend to pursue the wrong ideals, become corrupt, and inevitably lead themselves to their own demise. Insecurity is a route to destruction, and America is speeding down that road to dissolution.
Most people think that peer pressure is one of the leading cause of low self-esteem ,we read about young adult going through teen issues such as bullying , fighting and many more other issues but in 2017 things have changed .Many teenagers are obsessed with social media sites such as Facebook, Snap chat, or even Instagram . these sites were either design for reconnection with lost family or friends to showing people bit a piece what you do on a day to day basis but now that’s not the case. Self -esteem is when an individual has confidence and satisfaction in themselves with the changes in how social media works in this day and age self-esteem is one of the issues it affects. Social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and
The social constructionist perspective holds the view that the self is continuing "shaped and reshaped through interactions with others and involvement in social and cultural activities" (Wetherell & Maybin, 1996, p 220). Social constructionist is concerned with explicating the processes by which people come to describe, explain, or otherwise account for the world (including themselves) in which they live (Gergen, 1971). Thus, the social constructionist approach implies that the self is shaped by social interaction within historical, cultural and social contexts. Social constructionist's apply an analysis of societal level which explain the self through social relations. Conversely, the
