Space Exploration and Why It’s Important On October 4th, 1957, Spunick 1 was the first artificial satellite to be launched into outer space by the Soviet Union. On April 12th, 1969, Yuri Gagarin was the first person to orbit the earth in a space capsule called Vostok 1. On July 11th, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first humans to take foot steps on the moon through the Apollo 11 mission. On February 14th 1990, the Voyager 1 space probe took a picture of the earth from a distance of 6 billion kilometers, the farthest anything man made object had ever been from home. Carl Sagan wrote a book with the same title stating: “Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives.” These events, and many after them, are some of the most important and revolutionary in space exploration history. These events show why we should learn the importance of space exploration, why we should continue it, and why space is the final frontier. The most important reason for the continuation of space exploration is that it helps us understand our earth and how the human race can preserve it and our species. For many years humans have been exploring space to discover the unknown and fuel their curious and adventurous nature, but the decision of whether space exploration is worth the cost is strongly debated. Due to various arguments and evidence space exploration is strongly supported is proven to be worth the cost. Some of these reasons include space exploration being able to expand our knowledge and it being able to generate wealth. With these reasons the argument of whether space exploration is worth the risk can be easily decided.
The concept of space exploration was first introduced to the American public in 1961 when President John F. Kennedy famously stood before congress and vowed that America would put a man on the moon “within the decade.” With hopes of defeating the Soviet Union in the “Space Race” and gaining a leg-up in the Cold War, NASA funding reached its all-time high in 1965-1966 when about four percent of the federal budget was devoted to exploring space. Since then however, funding dedicated to exploring space has nose-dived to about one-half of a percent of the federal budget (Tyson), with plans to cut that figure by an additional $260 million in 2017 (cite NASA funding cuts). Experts in the space-sciences field argue that increased funding in space exploration would re-ignite the American economy and return America to the scientific prominence it was once known for, while, on the other end of the spectrum, naysayers suggest that exploring space is an economic sink-hole that the United States can no longer afford to deposit to given its own earth-bound troubles.
Carl Sagan once said “every planetary civilization will be endangered by impacts from space, every surviving civilization is obliged to become spacefaring--not because of exploratory or romantic zeal, but for the most practical reason imaginable: staying alive... If our long-term survival is at stake, we have a basic responsibility to our species to venture to other worlds.” The National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA, is executing Sagan’s words every day. Although space exploration is now being emphasized on and invested in, what does this do to benefit earth or even every individual who lives on Earth? Many writers, engineers, mathematicians, and chemists can agree that space exploration is going to provide more research for medicine and environmental factors. Others may also argue that the risks of exploring another planet will be too damaging because the life or atmosphere as it is will not be the same after humans have made their print on it.
Space exploration funding has been drastically reduced since the conclusion of the Space Race. Even though the Space Race is no longer relevant, it has positively affected human civilization, and we should continue to invest in space exploration to continue this trend. The first and primary reason we should continue to work with space is to aid industries on earth. Most notable is the use of satellites for purposes such as commercial communications, the GPS system, and meteorology. The second reason is because humans have an inherent hunger for knowledge, and space funding helps us develop technology for seeing what’s beyond earth. Space probes such as New Horizons and telescopes such as the James Webb Telescope have expanded our knowledge
Space exploration is an ongoing discovery and exploration of celestial structures in outer space. There is an ongoing debate wheter or america should invest in space exploration, but many may argue its just a waste of time and money. Good oppotunites and benefits are highly possible to happen due to space exploration. There are many interesting and benificial things such as finding another presence, facts about how mars became i dried freezing dessert, and solving the fianl mysteries.
Few moments define the twentieth century and human scientific advancement like the Apollo moon landing. But now, almost fifty years later, we may forget that this achievement was the result of a relatively short and furious "space race," with a mere twelve years separating the first manmade object orbiting Earth (Sputnik 1 in 1957) and Neil Armstrong 's 1969 walk on the moon. No human has ventured so far since the end of the Apollo missions in 1972. Few articulate the fact that had it not been for the Cold War the space program would not have advanced at all if ever.
The trip around the world continued the “space race” between countries. There were other trips into space later on. One of the major space trips years after Glenn was the “man on the moon.” On July twentieth, nineteen sixty-nine, Neil Armstrong, an American astronaut was the first man to walk on the moon. His famous words are “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Space journeys continued the years following the “man on the moon.” Machines are used to record space by taking pictures in order to obtain more information concerning space.
Around the 50’s and 60’s, the United States and the Soviet Union had a “competition” called the Space Race. “They raced each other in achieving significant firsts in space”(Brigham). The Soviet Union beat the United States in the first satellite, first human in orbit, and the first space walk. But then, the United States stepped in with the first rendezvous in space, the first extension of mission durations in more than a week, and the first docking of space crafts. Later, the United states orbited the moon, and then the famous Apollo 11 mission was when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first stepped foot on the moon.
Space travel has become a growing event in the world and has assisted in advancing our knowledge as well as providing information about the solar system. As the human race continues to grow, the need for resources continues to grow as well and finding new places to inhabit as well as being able to find new resources is becoming more important. The issue that needs to be addressed currently is the air quality onboard the space habitats, stations and vehicles. There have been advancements in that section, but new challenges arise that have negative impacts on the crew. Despite these issues, however, there is not an immediate need to stop space exploration as long as these issues are being worked on.
Mankind has always been fascinated with exploring the unknown. From sailing to distant lands to someday setting foot on other planets, the spirit of exploration is the same. Bur now with the current economic situation and the high cost of sending people to space, NASA is being looked at as a way to free up some much needed funds. Although, there is many problems here on planet Earth that need addressing, the benefits of space exploration far out weight the disadvantages. Space exploration has given us more advanced technology, advances in the medical field, and a boost to the economy and these facts cannot be disputed.
You hear a lot of people saying that space research is cool but it is typically a waste of money and valuable resources that could be used to benefit our own planet and the many problems that we have all over earth today. But I completely, one hundred percent agree on the further exploration of space for different reasons such as: we are living in a virtual age where everything is done with smart phones and computers and physical exploration is much needed. Second it can actually help the economy in multiple ways not just waste money. Lastly It also guarantees the development of good technology, not only with companies, but among the younger people who need to be inspired through the educational systems we have in America.
This article is useful to my research because of the analysis of the relationship between each step in space exploration and the possible benefits in the science field. Although this article is shorter than most of other resources, it clearly explains the whole processes of space exploration as a benign cycle, space resources produce economy, economy provides technologies, technologies creates opportunities to future exploration, future exploration leads to more discoveries and resources, and then back to increase in economy. It is a unique perspective of explaining the reason why we need to explore outer space and mining resources, each step produces considerable benefits.

Space exploration refers to the exploration and discovery of outer space’s celestial structures by means of the ever-growing space technology, which is continuously evolving. Space physical exploration is conducted by using unmanned robotic probes. Human spaceflight is also used for space exploration. The history of space exploration dates back to the 20th century when the world’ most powerful states such as Russia and the United states scrambled for superiority. Space exploration therefore became a sense of pride and extreme manpower leading to development of space vehicles, which attempted to reach space. The space exploration programs were conducted by government space agencies mainly of the United States and Soviet Union due to the sensitivity and huge finances involved. With time, private organizations began to purchase and offer space launches, laying ground for private space flight. Satellite radio, communications satellites, astronaut transport, satellite television and sub-orbital space tourism comprise the Earth orbit’s private space lift.
