Imposing Strict Punishment For Driving Offences
Two weeks back, my friends and I witnessed a car accident in front of our very own eyes. The night was still as there were not many cars on the road. However, the silence was disrupted by a loud screeching noise. The flow of conversation came to a halt as we turned our heads in unison towards the source of the noise. At that exact moment, we saw a black car crashed into a lamp post. The front of the car was severely damaged and minutes later, the bleeding driver could be seen limping out of the car. What we have just witnessed serves as proof that road accidents are becoming more and more rampant with every passing day. Some suggest imposing strict punishments for driving offences as a

They are also made to wear uniforms while carrying out their duties. Undoubtedly, they would be embarrassed as people would take notice of them and more so if it were their very own friends. They might even be mocked at or ridiculed by passers-by. However, the main aim of the community service is not to make a fool of these people but to bring about a change of attitude in them. By doing the community service, hopefully they are able to experience and appreciate the hardship that others face in maintaining the public areas even though the offence committed was not related to it. One way or another, this might just help them to be a better person.
A prison sentence could also be seen as an effective method to reduce road accidents. However, this will take into account the severity of the road offence committed. If it involves the lost of an innocent life then a prison sentence should be compulsory. For instance, the punishment of a two year long imprisonment to those who commit a road offence such as driving under the influence (DUI). If there happens to be a lost of a life due to that person’s irresponsible act, then the prison sentence should be extended to four years. This might seem rather cruel to some but these offenders should think of the consequences before they decide to go behind the wheels while under the influence of certain substances such as
According to this study, nearly all drivers were intoxicated and admitted. If all drivers were forced into a jail cell, there would be shrinkage in both fatalities and automobile accidents. In fact, “Almost half of all drivers who were killed in crashes tested positive for drugs and also had alcohol in their system” (Johnston, O'Malley, Bachman, and Schulenberg 1). So why should any offender remain free? According to “Drunk Driving Accident Statistics”, “Three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some point in their lives” (5). To guarantee the safety of innocent people on the road, all offenders must go to jail immediately.
However the government have not just been attempting to raise awareness about the effects of drink driving but also putting in place stricter measures for offenders so that people are deterred even more from driving whilst they are under the influence of alcohol. At present the maximum penalty for being caught drinking and driving is a £5000 fine, a ban on the individual’s driving licence and 6 months imprisonment. If the individual causes a road collision whilst they are under the influence of alcohol and cause a fatality, they can be sentenced to a maximum of 14 years in prison. Apart from the initiatives in place to prevent drinking and driving, there have been other government initiatives used in order to stop people from using their phones when they are driving, to wear their seatbelt whilst they are driving and to prevent road rage by raising awareness.
You would think that if a person gets pulled over, arrested, gets his/her license suspended and gets court ordered to pay 250+ dollars in fines, that they would never get behind the wheel under the influence again and endanger someone else’s life. Wrong. According to a 2007 AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study over half of drivers arrested for drunk driving in the nation are repeat offenders. All states have adopted 21 as the legal drinking age. Two-thirds of the states have now passed Administrative License Revocation (ALR) laws, which allow the arresting officer to take the license of drivers who fail or refuse to take a breath test. All states have now lowered the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit from .10 to .08 percent for adults, and all states have passed Zero Tolerance laws which prohibit drivers under twenty-one from having any amount of alcohol in their blood system. The penalties have increased for drinking and driving, yet the repeated offenders percentages haven’t decreased. Thus proving, what the laws are doing now is not working and they need to be raised. Going back to the purpose of punishment, if people keep doing the same thing, than the consequences before did not faze them and need to be stricter.
Each year numerous lives are lost due to careless and irrational driving. The disregard for safe driving has been a predicament to the United States of America for years. Many years Police have relied heavily on speed cameras, breathalyzer tests and heavy fines as a deterrent against unlawful drivers. Over the years fatality rates have increased, so the Department of Transportation and Highway Safety has composed a series of safe driving campaigns. On many occasions the Transportation Department informs and advises the public about the importance of responsible driving. They propagate safe driving through the various channels of the media and
Background and Audience Relevance: According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2015, about thirty-five hundred people were killed, and four hundred thousand were injured in car crashes.
When I hear about these accidents I question some things like, should we change the laws
The penalties for drinking and driving are ineffective in many ways. Driving while intoxicated is America's most frequently committed violent crime( DeYoung 989). According NCADD, Nation Commission Against Drunk Driving, a chronic drunk driver drives intoxicated over 1,000 times before being caught. A chronic drunk driver does not respond to the law enforcement, the social ethics, and the message sent by society against driving drunk. Given the highly disproportionate role that these people play in drunk driving incidents, injuries, and fatalities, it would be wise to put our focus on them. Chronic drunk drivers only make up a small percentage of the drivers, but they are responsible for nearly all accidents. Studies show that 21-34 year olds make up for more than half of all the fatal driving accidents (R.E. green
More and more people are dying from those crucial disgusting accidents. People should understand that those crucial habits should not be tolerated and it cannot be done. Hopefully, this has been persuasive enough so that you don’t need to kill innocent people and you do not need to live with a miserable life. Driving is fun, but killing people is not. Hence, people can grow with some more aware driving skills, and simplify the deaths per year. If people stay away from texting while driving, impaired driving and speed
Driving in the united states is risky when there is a death every twenty two minutes, because of an accident caused by a DUI need to be tougher in the United States. Our greatest concern are the death rates due to DUI offenses. The best way to combat these offenses is to make prison sentences longer and stricter, make fines larger, and make it harder for the offender to get their license reinstated after an arrest for a DUI.
There are things we can and must do to prevent drunk driving as much as we can and eventually completely cut it out. We have to look at the facts and statics and not let those around us, our friends, our families become victims of drunk driving. Weather they’re the ones that take part in driving under the influence or are killed or injured even though sober due to someone else’s selfish drunk driving actions there has got to be a stop to all of this. Laws can only do so much, it’s up to us to decide to take part in no drinking and driving. It is not a good feeling to see headlines talking about collisions or fatalities that occurred due to drunk driving and the feeling is even worse when you personally know the people involved. Let’s keep drunk driving from happening, let’s help put a stop to those stories you hear that were caused by people driving under the influence. In this time and age there is no excuse for drunk driving. WAKE UP, HELLO have a designated driver, call an Uber, a taxi, a reliable friend or family member, stay the night if you can at the place where you were drinking, anything just do anything but drink and
A girl by the name of McKay was out at a bar late one night. She had way too much to drink and was not thinking straight. McKay made the bad decision of stepping into her car at 12:30 a.m. She then crossed a highway when she smashed into another car, with her speed set at 105 km/hr. In that moment, driving impaired cost the life of a husband, a wife, a five-year-old daughter, and two-year-old son (Mcadam, 2016). Unfortunately, this is not the first time people were killed from drunk driving, and it is certainly not the last unless there are harsher consequences. It is said that 2016 might go down as the worst year for drunk driving deaths. There are approximately twenty-eight people who are killed from drunk driving each day (Brennan, 2016). Drunk drivers deserve worse punishments because they bring serious danger to cities all around the world.
Dangerous driving habits result in the death of thousands of people each year; however, by taking steps to educate young drivers on dangerous habits behind the wheel; countless lives could be saved.
The old saying is, “When you know better, you do better.” Since this is not the case with some drivers, then it up to law enforcement to be more vigilant. It is a well-known fact that most people will get behind the wheel, even while inebriated, if they feel they can get away with it. Law enforcement has to take steps to show that they “know better” so that drivers will “do better”. Two actions can be taken to discourage individuals from driving while intoxicated: random traffic stops to screen drivers and more arrests. Having random road checkpoints to ascertain whether people are driving under the influence will make people less inclined to do it. Also, having more arrests will send a message to the community that they will not get away with driving while in such a harmful
Yes, I do believe that the current laws in place in regards to drinking and driving are effective. The vast majority of motorist tend to be aware of the severe fines and penalties associated with this offense, so I do believe that it definitely serve as a general deterrent to the general public. It definitely stops individuals from getting behind the wheel, or at least makes them think twice about it. However, as stated by Hart al et. (2013), almost 90 percent of those involved in fatal drinking and driving accidents are first time offenders. So no matter how tough a penalty is you will always have those who are willing to push their luck and put others and themselves in danger because they think they wont get caught, and that’s because they
Now a day, driving while intoxicated has become America’s deadliest crime. There were more than 11,000 alcohol-impaired deaths in 2008, sadly those death were preventable if we had more severe Laws against this issue. Drivers are well aware of the Laws and consequences against drunk driving, especially after destroying families due to their carelessness decision. Victims’ Families entire life are ruined because of the sudden death of their loved one, and they are never going to be able to reclaim their normal life, while the offenders after a few days in prison reclaims he’s normal life. As a result of our fragile criminal justice system everyday road users share the road with repeat offenders who are highly resistant to change their
