As a competent and often high achieving writer at a secondary level, I didn’t believe that I had significant issues in my academic writing. The score I achieved in the PELA test was shocking (6.5) as it didn’t reflect my previous achievements as a writer previously. Through the reflection and analysis of my writing for this assessment, I discovered that my skills were “in need of toning” with the Writers Diet tool (writersdiet.com). Due to its broad analysis, I went further by using the Pro Writing Aid (prowritingaid.com) and Paper Rater (paperrater.com) to uncover the underlying issues of my writing style. Associating these writing aids with the advice from Grellier and Goerke (2014) allowed me to realise, and practice, tools and techniques I previously had little knowledge about. Improving my text will involve constantly referring back to my outlined elements of satisfactory academic writing, and actively using them when undertaking formal writing. The online tools have also become an important aspect in my plan for improvement as I can …show more content…
Previously I had worried about the relevant content and rushed my academic writing without planning. This awareness has allowed me to slow down the writing process and put more emphasis on the readability of my texts. The most prominent issue within my academic writing as identified by the Writers Diet tool was an overuse of prepositions. These decreased the simplicity and direction of my writing, creating less emphasis on the point I was attempting to portray to the reader. To improve this aspect of my academic writing I will plan my texts before I write them. I am also planning to begin proof reading and editing, which is an essential aspect of writing that I have not done in the past. This will provide clear meaning in my texts and a chance to remove unnecessary language that decreases its
Within the past eight weeks, I have realized my strengths and weaknesses within the writing process. I have realized that I do not utilize the first step within the writing process of prewriting. However, for the drafting, revising, and polishing steps of the writing process, I am very familiar and use additional resources to strengthen the writing assignment. I create multiple drafts, which includes revising and polishing in each step. Therefore, I use all three of these steps in multiple drafts as I reach the final product for
Prior to entering class, I thought that I was a competent writer. However, I quickly learned that my writing was conversational and that I had little experience in academic writing. I became aware that much of my poor writing was like an old habit that I found humbling to admit and hard to correct. Passive voice, unneeded words, long sentences, were just a few of the obstacles that resulted in ineffectual writing. However, using peer reviews and an editing checklist I slowly began the journey to better writing. I also found that reading about writing provided supplementary methods to improve my writing. Implementing these new techniques, I slowly began to understand what scholarly writing entailed. As I learned through giving criticism
Like transforming from a caterpillar to a butterfly, my writing style transformed from something mediocre to something quite exceptional. In high school, even when I took advanced placement English and Literature courses, I was never good at writing. My writing would lack structure, reasoning, syntax, and a well-defined thesis statement. My inadequate grades on writing assignments lowered my self-esteem, so I assumed I would never enjoy writing papers because I believed I could never improve. However, since attending a university my writing style has improved far beyond my expectation. My EN 101 course enhanced my understanding of the different ways I could approach my writing. Also, it enhanced my comprehension of outlines to complete assignments. Investing quality time into my writing made a substantial difference because I became a stronger writer. Through the late nights, constant revisions, and agonizing head traumas, I learned that my writing is truly spectacular whenever I incorporate well-defined thesis statements, provide sufficient supporting evidence, and maintain a clear focus in my assignments.
The first semester of W131 has given me the chance to become more familiar with my strengths and weaknesses in my writing process. One of the main things I contribute to my progression in writing is practice and revision. W131 has given me the resources I need to become an effective writer by pushing me to think deeper about what writing process works best for me. To find what writing process works for me, I have experimented with different writing techniques along with alternative reading techniques to allow me to retain more detail. Although I improved some skills during the first half of W131, I still have many skills that could be critiqued to enhance my writing process and essays.
In addition to changing the steps I take in conducting literature reviews, I have sought out resources which will assist in enhancing my writing style and language. This situation has made me take a closer look at my writing, as I am always looking for ways to become a more polished writer. As researchers we tend to speak a certain language in our writing and use similar phrases or styles. It is useful at times to have these “go to” phrases but can also leave room for inadvertent mistakes to go unnoticed. As I continue to further develop my writing style, increasing my ability to express a single perspective in multiple ways will be imperative. Tools such as the free tutorials offered by APA on style, which breaks down how to write using APA style. Although some of the resources I have come across are targeting those who may not have experience with this style of writing, I have found it useful as a refresher and/or basic reference. Going back to the basics will allow for me to ensure that I am building my writing style on a strong foundation.
My entire life, reading and writing have always been my weaknesses. Coming from a Hispanic household, the way things are said and written does not usually translate the same way to English. As much as I have always tried to push myself and keep improving, I feel like I have reached a point where I need a small push and guidance to take my writing to the next level. From my high school, I learned a lot of writing technics and have some small grammar lectures every now and then. Writing my research papers, preparing speeches, and all the college essays have given me lots of practice with different writing styles and methods. Yet, I still have not found one that I feel the most confident in. This semester, I truly wish to improve the transitions

A lot of things happen in humans’ life, ups and downs, rights and wrongs, choices that can be optional and unavoidable choices. Among those choices, I chose to be here at University of Arizona, studying Electrical and Computer Engineering. As the requirement to be student here, I took English 107 class in semester of spring 2017. Being international student in a foreign country is not easy. At the first time I came at UA and the first general education class I took required me to write 10 page research paper, in APA format. I ended up writing 3 10 pages essay in order to pass the class. At that time I was taking English 106 class, but I wasn’t that much ready to write 10 page research paper. Now, after taking English 107 class,
Everyone has their own approach to writing, but there are always ways to learn new methods to improve their writing style. Personally, I have experimented with different approaches to improve my writing every year. However, I have realized that I still have a lot of room for improvement and exploration. After reading Foley, Murray, Lamott, Elbow, and Flower, I gained a better understanding in how to improve my writing and identifying the mistakes and styles I have adopted in my writing that are not as effective. Thus, these articles have explained many strategies and styles such as the five paragraph essay, steps to having a good writing process, and the way of revising a piece of work until it seems like the best product. In short, revising
Writing papers has not been my strong suit in school. Writing papers has bad days, as well as good days for me. One day I can write a five page paper in one sitting, another, I struggle to write a sentence within half an hour. Writing, as well as using the writing process, is a very daunting task, in which I hope to excell in throughout the course of this year. Although I have struggled with writing in the past, I believe that I can turn this around by utilizing the writing process, as well as reducing the mistakes that have been made in the past.
Higher-level writing is vital for my current standings as a college student and my future endeavors. In order to receive positive responses on any papers or discussions, I must be able to properly write on a college-level. I have continuously worked on my writing skills throughout English 101 and 102 and hope the skills I have gained in these courses will prepare me to write on an intellectual level. Looking back at previous discussion posts, assignments, papers, and feedback from peers and my instructor, I have achieved a large amount of insight to higher-level writing. This past semester I was required to create four major papers including Rhetorical Analysis Essay, Annotated Bibliography, Exploratory Essay, and the Researched Position Paper. Each of these papers entailed vigorous research and time. My writing has progressively improved throughout the semester in quoting, summarizing, and paraphrasing source material, as well as choosing academic appropriate sources; however, I must strive to improve in general writing skills covering organization, style, diction, grammar, and mechanics.
This year we practiced a couple of writing styles, they include the ACE answer, letters, literary analysis, monologues, narratives, poems, and last but not least essays. But my favorite type of writing out of all those is the ACE response. I like the ACE response because it is short and sweet and get right to the point but it does it in an organized fashion so is not just all over the place. Witched helps keep you on track and on topic with how you want to end your ACE response. But if I had to pick a least favorite it would probably be narratives.because they are so much longer an require more attention to detail when you are writing.
Through the use of Pro Wring Aid, Paper Rater and Writers Diet I was able to identify the problems with my writing and what elements need improving such as grammar and sentence structure. The feedback I received from pro writing aid, paper rater and writer’s diet identified that my writing was inconsistent in terms of capitalisation, spelling, misplaced or absent punctuation and a lack of adjectives and the overuse of verbs. These mistakes were mostly due to a lack of proper editing and the use of long sentences making my writing difficult to understand. I was not expecting this negative feedback I received. I thought I used academic language and formulated my ideas in a clear and concise manner.
Teachers in high school were constantly trying to tell you how to write their way and perfect what they thought was good writing. Little did I know everyone’s writing style is good in its own way. This academic writing class proved to me that no writing style is right or wrong, but instead all writing styles have their own uniqueness and character to them. After reading the assigned articles and analyzing the writing process and other topics discussed in this class, I now see writing as an extraordinary process that is different for everyone. After writing papers and getting feedback, I saw where my writing lacked solid evidence in my rhetorical analysis paper, and I also found certain ways I can write more efficiently in my process
