In comparison to twenty years ago when the world was vast and stranger filled, our lives today are filled with a host of resources. Over the years, Facebook has become a platform whose purpose has become questionable. In a letter to Facebook potential investors, Mark Zuckerberg - the creator of Facebook - addresses that “Facebook was not originally created to be a company. It was built to accomplish a social mission — to make the world more open and connected.” He had the intention of informing the moneymaker investors that Facebook only makes money to improve its service and not to generate any type of income. For Mr. Zuckerberg, Facebook is non-profit company that provides a platform where people can build a social community to share ideas, memories and opinions. Therefore, it fulfills one of the most important life necessities: connection.
With all the innovations coming out of Facebook and parent corporation Google, there are just as many exploits on the digital frontier as there are benefits.
From King Street to Wall Street and from classrooms to boardrooms, there is a revolution happening and it is being driven by how we communicate with each other and by the unprecedented rise of what is commonly called “social media”. (Dictionary.com, 2014) Social Media is the use of dedicated websites and applications to interact with other users, or to find people with similar interests to one 's own. (Dictionary.com, 2014) A business, also known as an enterprise or a firm, is an organization involved in the trade of goods, services, or both to consumers. The historic invisible walls of the Internet are being broken down daily, locally and globally. Social media touches nearly every facet of our personal and business lives so it’s imperative for social media to be an integral part of a company’s overall strategy, a business’s overall success will be partly owed to the success of their social media use. Social media will be a business’s customer today, tomorrow, their employees and others.
Due to the global proliferation of social media, Facebook and other social networking sites (SNS), researchers have taken an interest in studying the nature of how people utilise SNS especially with regard to age disparities. However, there is a lack of qualitative research that investigates participants’ values and perceptions of SNS (Pfeil, Arjan and Zaphiris 2009). The purpose of this research is to explore this question by investigating the influence of age on participants ' perceptions of the SNS, Facebook. Facebook was selected for this study due its popularity, as identified by Tong et al. (2008) as having a membership population of approximately eighteen million.
Facebook’s biggest stumbling block has been its privacy practices. As the world’s largest social network, Facebook has been under intense scrutiny from consumers, courts and regulators worldwide over how it handles the data it collects from its 845 million users. But as a company preparing to go public, it is under pressure to find new ways to turn that data into profit.
Over the last decade and the advances in global communication, Internet speeds, and the availability of Smartphones, Laptops, and more memory in computers, online social networks have experienced huge amounts of growth, turning into robust multi-million dollar sites and receiving attention from politicians, marketing professionals of all types, educators and scholars. In fact, MySpace and Facebook, two of the more popular online networks in the United States, account for almost 10% of all Internet usage and have a huge growth of about 200,000 profiles daily (Tancer, 2007). This growth is so powerful that MySpace was sold in 2005 for almost $600 million, Microsoft purchased 1.6% of Facebook for $240 million in October of 2007 (Liedtke, 2007). Facebook posted a controversial and still unheard of Initial Public Offering in February 2012, causing a great deal of concern within the investment community, yet slowly recovering as of July 2012 (Levisohn, 2012). Based on the manner in which Social Networking has changed the manner in which marketers, politicians, and culture views interacting on the Internet, and the changes in behavior engendered by them, they can be defined as egocentric social groups (Boyd and Ellison, 2007). This trend, particularly in light of the media attention from the IPO, will likely assure Facebook's growth potential over the next few years, particularly using its library of user information and data.
Facebook, a social networking website, has changed the way people communicate with each other. A social networking website is an online platform that allows users to create a public profile and interact with other users on the website. Facebook has even changed our most personal and private conversations and how they are conducted around the world. Since the internet’s birth in 1983, this trend of online communication has been growing. Created in 2004, now registered with more than one billion participants, Facebook’s user numbers surpass even the top four social networking websites combined. According to Wikipedia statistics, Instagram has 300 million registered users, LinkedIn has 200 million users, Classmates.com has 50 million users, and Flickr has 32 million registered users. To be further convinced of the claim that Facebook indeed changes the way we communicate, you would only need to create your own Facebook account and start participating in their social networking experience. Technology and internet usage is fused into every aspect of our society including the style of communication. The launch of Facebook in 2006 also enabled other devices such as touch phones, interactive tablets, and even advanced cars with their own networking capabilities starting in 2007. Facebook is a multibillion-dollar company and is highly recognized for connecting more people than other networks. Facebook’s long-term success can be attributed to providing entertainment, world news, and
By virtue of the amount of time spent on the site, Facebook is the leading social media network. Founded in 2004, it is estimated that this social network had over a billion monthly active users in 2013. Facebook is free and enables its users to create profiles, keep in touch with their friends and upload or share pictures and videos. It has also been suggested Facebook largely caters to educated users. A Pew Internet and American Life Project report found the educational distribution of Facebook users to be as follows: pre high school 5 percent, high school 26 percent, trade school or some college 34 percent, bachelor degree 20 percent, and graduate school 15 percent. Despite majority of its users being educated, most Facebook users are complacent towards issues of privacy or the risks of internet usage in general. In 2005, serious flaws in Facebook’s set up that would enable breaches in people’s privacy and allow for data mining were
