Highlights of my activities:
As a part of the required activities for the course EGR9220 “Teaching in Higher Education Practicum” at Villanova University, I have had the opportunity to teach a few sessions for CEE2105 for fall semester 2017, supervised by Dr. David Dinehart. On Wednesday November 1st, I recorded two lectures to be posted on the blackboard and viewed by students prior to their in-class session on the following Friday and Monday. I received the PowerPoint slides for those recorded session from Dr. Dinehart, however, added certain material to them with his consent. In particular, I added a nine-step problem solving procedure to be implemented during in-class sessions, 37 and 38. The total duration of the recorded sessions was about 26 minutes. The first recording was titled “Centroids of the composite areas”, and the second recording was titled “Centroid of composite areas, lines, and volumes”.
On Friday November 3rd, I instructed two in-class problem solving sessions from 8:30’ AM to 9:20’ AM, and from 9:30’ AM to 10:20’ AM, both on the topic of centroids of composite areas. From the two in-class sessions, the second session was recorded and posted on the blackboard webpage as well. The problems and solutions for both sessions were provided by Dr. Dinehart, and per his request, I tried my best to comply with his formatting in writing of the material on the touchscreen. At the end of both sessions, questionnaires that were previously designed by myself were
Everyone is likely to experience some form of discrimination or prejudice; as is anyone capable of acting prejudiced towards others. On April 5th, 1968, a teacher in Riceville, Iowa named Jane Elliot conducted an experiment with her third grade class that dealt with the concept of discrimination; and was documented in Peters’ 1985 ‘A Class Divided’. The exercise originally took place the day after Martin Luther King was assassinated. The documentary is an eye opener to the world of racism and discrimination. Bucher (2010) describes racism as “discrimination based on the belief that one race is superior to another” (97). According to Bucher (2010) “discrimination is defined as the
I had my appointment on the previous week at the Writing center. I brought my 2nd project for ENGL 160 class. I scheduled tutor to “face to face”, because I think it is the best way to improve all of my mistakes. Before going to Writing center, I was thinking that this tutor doesn’t help me at all, but fortunately my thoughts was wrong and I enjoyed 1 hour of editing my project.
As a Para, I have to take a class with our ELL students so I can interpret for them in the event they cannot understand something. Although the teacher in this specific class is a great teacher, in my opinion, his communication skills are frightening the kids. Last week the students got the results of the last test and most of the kids did not do well. His speech went on for almost twenty minutes, telling the kids how upsetting it was to have such bad scores when everything is provided to them; that they needed to pay more attention to the class and do their homework, etc.…. during this time his face turned red, and his body language became stiff. He repeated himself over and over again. It was so bad; I wanted to run out of the class
Intern met with resident K. Brown for the purpose of addressing her personal concerns and speaking with her about her community service hours. Kiara informed me that she completed her community service hours for the previous week. Intern asked her to verify the days she completes CS hours, and she stated Sundays and Wednesdays. Resident did express her frustrations by saying that she used to mess up with her CS hours, but she is really trying to do better. Intern advised her that another resident completes hers during that time, so she will have to do CS hours on Mondays and Thursdays or Mondays and Fridays. Intern also explained to her the importance of doing CS hours. It was explained that not only is this a requirement of the program,
Going through the experience of attending Early Start for English it helped me reflect on my writing. Through this course I have came to the realization that I am going to be challenged in college and I am going to have to advocate for myself and be responsible with my work to succeed. This Early Start class helped me realize that I am not the best when it comes to writing but it motivates me to improve. In order to improve in my grammar and vocabulary I have to reach out to my peers, professors or any resources given by the school. This course made me practice some skills I haven't used since school ended. ESE 99 ot be back in the habit of writing and organizing my time to get my work done in time.
JROTC is a program at Mary Persons that focuses on the strength and work ethics as future patriots for our country. This specific class works on how to work together as a team, to be disciplined, and to love our country respectively. The JROTC is trained to compete in different competitions, perform for our community at different events, etc. Although at times they may have hardships, whether if it's working hard to get the perfect routines or working out daily to perform various tasks to get the job done. The skills that they learn is not just for this program but it aids in them to become well rounded individuals. The discipline and the respect that they show is something that will last a life time.
For this task we needed to observe a content area class and reflect on the experience. With the help from Mrs. “P”, I was able to observe a Math class, she teaches 5th grade level. The two ELL’s beginners’ students from Colombia that I had been working with are at her math class.
In the J.R.O.T.C class we make it our job to help others in need, If a public service comes up and they ask for our help we try our best to supply the help they need. When I joined JROTC I was shocked by all of the community service projects they wanted us to do. I never thought that I would be able to do it all. We helped with parades, serve people for company picnics, we even do stuff to help out around the school like put up tables and chairs for testing. We do so much in JROTC to help everyone and each and every project motivates me when I see the turn out.
Our group chose to research reading comprehension development and how to teach our young readers how to gain knowledge from text. We have observed our students relying on their background knowledge rather than acquiring meaning from the text. We would like to learn more about the resources that are available to help our students develop comprehension strategies.
The best class I have taken here at UNL is Human Anatomy (BIOS 214). I am currently enrolled in this class for the fall semester but I believe I have gained more knowledge in this class to help me in the future than any class previous to it. Anatomy is a very strenuous course and takes a great amount of time during the week to learn the material given but worth the hard work at the end of the semester. I want to enter physical therapy school after my undergraduate degree and this course really guides you in that direction of professional school. It builds on topics learned in other classes and really fills in concepts that you previously didn’t know or take the time to learn during other classes. This course really gives you an understanding
In 9th grade, the first year I moved to florida, the middle school I went to was Jenkins middle school. I didn't join any clubs or any activities but there was one thing that stood out to me. I noticed these kids wearing this military like uniform. I never had the chance to ask but i made sure when i got to high school, i would figure out what it was you had to do to get that uniform. In 9th grade I found out what the program was. I learned it was called JROTC and I immediately caught interest because the kids just looked so good and I was also very much interested in the branch. Now, at that point, I did not consider the military but by the middle of the year I got my least interesting elective changed for JROTC. Even though the class was
The beginning of the term was really slow. For the first few weeks I didn’t have any students to tutor. So, I utilized this down time to observe the ways in which some of the graduate students’ tutor while in the writing lab. I primarily viewed Celeste and Christie’s sessions and while watching them tutor, I observed how they handled different situations and I took notes to keep track of what I learned. Some of the most common questions I noticed were about sentence structure, grammar, and how to create a thesis. And Celeste and Christie went about answering students’ questions in a very calm and calculated way. Seeing how other tutors operate served to be a productive method of learning back during fall term and it provided insight during
Class environment: Mrs. Hillman's classroom had math poster on the walls placed around the room. One poster board on the wall showing lattice multiplication and traditional multiplication she gave the students' a choice to choose which type to use. Another poster was on the board with the acronym CHAMPS: C- construct your plan to solve the problem, H- how else can you solve the problem, A-apply knowledge, and strategies, M- mark, highlight or circles keywords and numbers and P-problem solving the model, S-show how you checked your work. The students finished work also posted on the wall label as good, outstanding, and you got it!
My favorite chapter in OADM 105 class was chapter seven which was about Customer Service. All information provided in this chapter was very beneficial and interesting to me. The learning objectives and develop workplace skills were interesting and easy to do with understandable facts included. Learning objectives covered the whole chapter with only a few questions which we could save the time and get the whole point of the chapter easily. The reason I liked this chapter the most was that I worked in the customer service in the past; therefore, I wanted to learn more the skills I did not know in the past. In this chapter, I found out new and some known information about customer service. For instance, who are the external and internal customer,
In the modern technologically advanced world that we live in people are more connected than ever. Businesses can instantly collaborate with its foreign counterparts; sharing new ideas and concepts from thousands of miles away. Therefore, it is inevitable that we will have that chance to work with people from many different backgrounds, with many different experiences. It is important that everyone is able to utilize the abilities that our different backgrounds have given us.
