In Opposition of Eugenics and Human Embryo Research

There are a variety of views of eugenics and all that it entails. The definition of eugenics is "the science of improving the physical and mental qualities of human beings through control of the factors influencing heredity," ( Funk and Wagnall's, 1984). Others think eugenics is the social control of human genetic evolution, an ideology of racism and genocide, thought to improve society and halt disease while others think only of the Nazi Regime (Saetz, 1985 and McGee, 1997). Eugenics has a long and tumultous past but with the mapping of the human genome and research on human embryos, where will eugenics lead the wolrd in the near future?

The purpose of eugencis is to interefere with human reproduction, take out those people who are biologically undesirable and multiply those who are desirable. In my opinion, from the past history of eugenics, I feel the practice of eugenics is completely discriminatory and in the practice to rid disease from our genes in the near future, only the rich will benefit, and those with money will find ways of enhancing their children in any way they want -- to be taller, thinner, with blonde hair...the possibilities are endless!

In 1932, the US had approved compulsory sterilization laws in 26-32 states (Davis, 1981). Those sterilized were people in mental institutions, criminals, the feeble minded, and many women of color who went into hospitals for, say, a heart surgery and woke up to find that they could no longer have children (Davis, 1981). This is obviously discrimination and I am afraid of the direction the human race will take with the advanced knowledge of the human genome and how to mainpulate it. With reserach on human embryos and the mapping of the human genome, I realize the benefits many people may have by ridding disease from their unborn children, curing infertility and many other things, but what kind of regulation would there be especially if all the research would be privately funded, due to the government not allowing this research? Parents could make the "perfect" child, pick the sex of their children; the choices are
