I will never forget my first Broadway musical show in New York. It was a magical experience that I believe everyone should be able to experience at least once. You step into a world unlike any other. My first musical ever and my most loved one has to go to ‘In the Heights”. In the Heights is based on a three-day journey of a small Hispanic neighborhood in New York called Washington Heights. The musical touches bases on salsa, hip-hop, soul music, and merengue. In the small Latino community of Manhattan’s Washington Heights, the story plot revolves around a character named Usnavi, and his hair stylist girlfriend Vanessa. This Tony award-winning musical, encounters the many diverse residents of Washington Heights, while they’re the peak
“In the Heights” by Lin-Manuel Miranda was produced by Pima Community College Center for the Arts. “In the Heights” takes place in Washington Heights, a neighborhood in the lively New York City, New York. This community consists of different cultures such as Dominican Republics, Chilean, Cuban, and Puerto Ricans who come together as a family, who share friendship and love. The characters in this play struggle with their identity, their dreams and pressure from family and friends. From the help of the set, lighting, properties and costumes this musical came alive.
In the Heights was the first full-length show that Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote. It was written his sophomore year of college at Wesleyan College in 1999. At this time, the latin-pop boom was just occurring with artists like Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez were becoming popular and featured on the radio. “We had this shared dual culture of American culture and
Heights was very successful off-Broadway, and finally, in 2008, it made its Broadway debut. The salsa-rap-hip hop musical about the Hispanic roots of people living in Washington Heights was a huge success, and won four Tony’s for Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Choreography, and Best Orchestrations in 2008, and a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album in 2009. On May 12th, 2009, Lin-Manuel Miranda was at the White House for the White House Evening of Poetry, Music, and the Spoken Word to perform alongside Tony Award winning composer Alex Lacamoire, the orchestrator for In The Heights. Instead of performing an expected Heights song, they took a risk and performed an early draft of Alexander Hamilton, which would later become the first song in a forty-six song musical about the life and times of Hamilton, the first U.S. Treasury Secretary. On May 14th, 2009, Miranda received an honorary degree from Yeshiva University - he is the youngest person to receive this degree from
With means to express oneself, helps one overcome the difficulties of life. This approach represents the entire nature of the hip hop culture, especially when dealing with social justice issues. Today, the hip hop culture association revolves around raps (lyrics) and the rappers which reflect how consumers receive messages about social justice issues. Unlike breaking and graffiti, the music/lyrics penetrate society more. However, for this analysis, the focus will rely on a visual element with a connection to hip hop music. Even though a music video would make sense as a visual means of expression, this analysis has more interest in the cover art that goes with a hip hop album. Also, this focus will lead to the question of how important is art
The musical “Hamilton” is the most sought after musical in years. It is the first seen rap musical and it has received the most ‘Tony’ awards and nominations in Broadway history. Hamilton premiered off Broadway in 2015 and soon moved to Broadway to stun the world with it’s incredible everything, from plot to casting. For best albums, Hamilton was second ranked in Billboard magazine and has got endless supply of recognition for the ingenious play written by the phenomenal Lin Manual Miranda. Hamilton is currently the most popular sensation on Broadway because of the music with its creative lyrics and hidden messages, it’s stellar performance and the perspectives it gives us on the people that founded our county. (on the people that shaped our past and developed our future).
Lead: In the world of musicals, Hamilton has become a rising star. However, some of us cannot afford to pay $500 a ticket to see the show, which is sold out for months into the future, performed live. But do not fear, the soundtrack to the musical in itself is wonderfully enjoyable, and tells much of the musical’s story as well.
Rent. To most people it is associated with an apartment, house, or another object. This word rarely conjures pleasant memories, but more often annoyance and stress. However, when someone mentions rent to me, my mind races to some of the most memorable experiences in my life.
Humorous, energetic, enjoyable and all-around fun, Legally Blonde: The Musical captured my attention from the get-go. This comical yet heartwarming musical portrays the story of a young woman following an ex-love to Harvard Law School only to realize the potential she possessed within herself and in the new life she creates for her own. After viewing this hit Broadway production, I am fascinated with how this theatre play was brought to life on stage with the lighting, sound, spacing and overall entertainment from the cast to the costumes. Altogether, this play is one of my all-time favorite productions and it is one that keeps my attention from the moment it takes off to the closing of the curtain at the end.
The play that I went to see was Beautiful: The Carol King Musical. I attended opening night of this play on Tuesday, February 21st of this year. This musical is about the true and remarkable story of her uprising career. Carol started off as a song writer when she was only a teen writing with her future husband, Gerry Goffin. The play is about an extraordinary person who battles everyday issues, but ultimately overcomes the odds and adversities thrown at her. With her talent in music and singing; Carol King went on to have one of the most successful solo acts in music history. King’s story is truly inspiring and this play attributes to her legacy not just as an artist but also a person. The play’s genre is musical theatre because singing and dancing are essential parts of the play. The director’s purpose of this play was to tell in great detail the life of American artist Carol King.
many times to signify its importance and the pace of the music was changed towards the middle to a much faster beat then back to normal again, I found this to be interesting and maybe it signifies that nothing is certain, and life should sometimes be fast and unpredictable. Next, West Side Story was composed by Leonard Bernstein and Irwin Kostal, it takes place in late 1950s New York where gang rivalries toke place. The rivalries between immigrant Puerto Ricans and native Anglo youths were portrayed as the Sharks and the Jets. The tension of the musical was built up by restricting the actors from each side to socialize or eat together. The actors were actually separated on and off stage as a way of method acting, the forces the groups to grow closer with their own gang and grew hatred for the other gang.
LISTENER RELEVANCE: Since film scores are such an important part of movies, it makes sense to learn a little bit more about them.
The first half of the concert was only instrumental. There were two violins, two violas, and two cellos. They sat on stage with the violins one my right, then the violas in the middle, and the cellos on the end. The violins played a few songs solo. The second half of the concert was only the choir and a piano. Their performance started with the song Daybreak. The song Daybreak also had a few girls playing percussion, one of them had a tambourine. Using SHMRG, the Harmony of most of the choirs songs were very homophonic. The Melody of most of the songs were mainly slow, though a couple songs were very fast, and upbeat.
In my paper I will be discussing what makes Rent such an extraordinary rock musical, the care that went into creating it, and how it was different from what came before. I will provide analysis of characters and the plot, plus I will be describing the importance and relevance of certain songs.
Tony and Maria - more romantic love, idealised, though Tony has to agree with Riff,
This movie is one I’ve came back to often, the acting, music, scenery, and the story itself is what brought me back. I liked how every actor in this film not only fit their role, but also made it believable. If they were to recast the actors today, I don’t think they could find better actors to fit the roles. Some of the roles in this are Viscount de Chagny “Raoul” played by Patrick Wilson, Christine Daaé played by Emmy Rossum, The Phantom of the Opera “Opera Ghost” played by Gerard Butler, these are just the main characters. The role of the Opera Ghost is played by Gerard Butler, his acting was good which wasn’t surprising I have seen some of his other roles and they were all well done also. What surprised me the most how well he could sing. There any many characters that are seen throughout the film, some supporting roles include Madame Giry played by Miranda Richardson, Meg Giry played by Jennifer Ellison, Carlotta Giudicelli played by Minnie Driver, Gilles André played by Simon Callow, Monsieur Lefèvre played by James Fleet, and Monsieur Reyer played by Murray Melvin. There are of course extras. This movie is a musical that is mainly drama based, so not only does it help keep the movie interesting, the music is good enough you could listen to it on its own. The movie is set in an Paris Opera House named the Opera Populaire in 1870. The Opera Populaire is very beautiful and huge. Christine gets a visit from “The Angel of Music” after her father’s death, the angel then
