“There are many reasons people see therapists. According to a 2004 Harris poll, 27 percent of adults received mental health treatment within two years of that year, 30 million of whom sought psychotherapy. “People go to therapy to cope with disorders, relationships, stress, grief, to figure out who they are and learn to live life to the fullest,” said Howes, who also writes the blog, In Therapy. “There’s no shame in wanting a better life”” (Margarita Tartakovsky, M.S.). With support from this quote, ever since the seventh grade I knew I wanted to go into the health care field. This is because my entire life I constantly wanted to help others more than they could help themselves. When I was in the sixth grade I lost my brother to chronic depression. He was absent and despondent that he could not face another day. We were all unaware of his sadness and desperation, that it was too late. …show more content…
In this society there are so many medicines that can help people like my brother and I want to be an advocate for them. I have an internal belief that everyone has the right to be happy, free, and adventurous. When an individual comes down with a mental illness, they lack drive, enthusiasm, and energy. With proper treatment, these flaws can be relinquished. “The General Adult Psychiatry Clinics provide diagnostic evaluation and treatment for a range of psychiatric disorders in adults, including bipolar and unipolar affective disorders, anxiety disorders, adjustment disorders, attentional disorders, personality disorders and some psychotic disorders. The general clinics provide medication management and limited psychotherapy, but can refer within the clinic for short and long term psychotherapy and neuropsychiatric testing” (University of
Most contemporary psychological treatment approaches are predecessors of the ancient and medieval philosophies and theories. Cognitive behavioural therapy as one of the modern treatment method in not an independently formed treatment, different theories have contributed to its present shape and application.
I spent endless hours studying psychology books and learning about biochemistry. I discovered that the makeup of an individual was a result of a complex combination of one’s social environment and the composition of one’s brain. All of this self-taught knowledge now only distracted me from the disastrous circumstances around me gave me a clear picture of where my place was in the world; to pursue a career in Mental Health. As unfortunate as the circumstances were, this was the time in my life where I had the opportunity to communicate with families of ailing loved ones and the patients themselves. My passion for interacting and understanding stemmed from my early childhood exposures to people in these types of settings. Instead of isolating myself from the world, these observations didn’t diminish my dream of being a Mental Health Counselor but strengthened it. I instantly gravitated towards listening to other people 's problems and offered suggestions on how to deal. More importantly, I discovered the immense feeling of satisfaction garnered when I was able to support others in need. Considering the positive feedback I received, I was certain that being a Therapist of some kind was what I am suited to do with my life and that it is my calling. Whether it is close friends, family, or just peers, I am constantly willing to lend an ear, now and then. Even if I did not feel adequate proposing
Once upon a time being a therapist was considered a calling. The images of a counselor sitting back in their comfy cushioned chairs listening to hours and hours of patient's dilemmas, heartaches and mental health issues have been replaced with the hard cold facts that therapists today are
A sixteen year old teenager refuses to leave home and the therapist must review the situation from a MRI therapeutic approach. First, the MRI approach would not focus on the problem or how it developed but rather what efforts have the parent made to reach a resolution. MRI stems from the premise that families use practical attempts at resolving their situation but the attempts are ill-advised. MRI’s main focus is aimed at dilemma driven solutions; there is no advantage in long term change or what capacity the problem serves within the family.
Evaluation and treatment of the mentally ill population has developed from confinement of the mad during colonial times, into the biomedical balancing of neurological impairment seen in these modern times. There were eras of mental health reform, medicalization, and deinstitutionalization sandwiched in between (Nies & McEwen, 2011). Regardless of the stage of understanding and development, communities have not been completely successful in dealing with and treating persons who are mentally unwell. Fortunately, treatment has become more compassionate; social and professional attitudes have morphed into more humanistic and
Combing medication with counseling and behavior therapy to treat substance abuse is Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT). It provides an “all-around” treatment approach and research shows that this treatment approach can be very successful in treating people with addictions. The treatment is mainly used for the addiction of opioids and prescription pain relievers that contain opiates. All the medications used for this therapy is required to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration and if mixed with certain medications, can be fatal. MAT can be helpful for an addict going through recovery.
Expanding from 6 to 24 programs over four years, Kentucky correctional system created a corrections-based modified therapeutic community treatment program. Corrections-based treatment program proves to reduce drug use and recidivism. Kentucky correctional compared offenders of none participants of the therapeutic community and program dropouts, graduates, and graduates who attended aftercare, “treatment groups were 15-20 times more likely to remain drug-free at 12-month follow-up” (Staton-Tindall, McNees, Leukefeld, Walker, Thompson, Pangburn, & Oser, 2009, 712). counselors used Personal digital assistants (PDAs) to input clinical assessment data. A university research team conducts a 12-month post release interviews for former inmates who used the services of the (CJKTOS) counselors. 700 offenders participated in
There are many different mental illnesses and ailments and just as many medications to treat them. The problem is that sometimes the medications are not correct for your disorders due to similar symptoms. This leads to problems with the patients who need help, but the patients are not getting the right medications and treatment they need.
Many people dismiss mental illnesses and act as if the person suffering from them can change the way they are feeling solely on “changing their attitude” or outlook on life. In reality, these illnesses are difficult to overcome and the majority of time require hours of therapy and medication, even then sometimes the illness cannot be overcome. The National Alliance on Mental illnesses has taught people that it isn't just a mindset that can sure a mental illness and that there is so much to learn about mental health. It has taught those who know someone suffering that they can help, instead of ignoring the problem suggest they search for professional help. Even those who want to help their friends can’t because they don't know how to, this organization gives them information on how to be a supportive person.
Today many people seek professional therapy or counseling for a limited amount of time in order to deal with different life crises. Others seek professional help for the majority of their lives in order to deal with a psychological disorder. After reading this chapter on Therapy, I learned that this was not always the case, and that the way our society views therapy, and the meaning of therapy, has changed dramatically of the years. This chapter not only explains the evolution of therapy, it explores the different therapeutic approaches.
Imagine that your best friend in the entire world had been seeming dejected or sad. He/she doesn’t seem to want to come out of the house, hang out, or anything that they used to like, they don’t like anymore. These are two of many signs that they are dealing with depression. Should depression continue to be treated with medication and therapy, or should depression not be treated with medication and therapy? Depression should be treated with medication and therapy for the following reasons, medication can balance out their serotonin levels and help them feel more relaxed, talk therapy can help them to open up and possibly find the good from every situation, as well as medication and therapy can help “cure” the depressive symptoms.

Our careers determine how we live and the impact we have in the society. Nursing is mainly assisting a person in performing some activities which the individual cannot perform them unaided. This person may lack knowledge, strength, or will due to health complications. On the other hand, Psychology includes mental, and behavior processes study in a scientific manner. These behaviors could be any form of actions or reactions that an individual show. Mental majorly deals with the mind which broadly deals with feelings, memory, thinking and other related processes. Nursing and Psychology have their similarities and differences like any other relevant disciplines. Both professions revolve around working with people and more specifically in the health
Finlay (2001) investigated how schizophrenic symptoms are paralleled by complex structural and functional abnormalities in brain regions such as the thalamus, the prefrontal cortex and the temporal lobe. As a result of the delayed onset of symptoms in early adulthood, abnormal development occurs in the nervous system which may contribute greatly to the neurobiology of the disorder. Weinberger’s (1988) longstanding hypothesis focused on the dysfunction of the prefrontal cortex and the association with schizophrenic cognitive deficits. Furthermore, Finlay’s (2001) research focused on the concept of a dysfunction of the mesoprefrontal DA neurons that may relate to the cognitive deficits associated with schizophrenia. As the clinical symptoms of this disorder emerge during early adulthood, abnormal developmental processes are thought to contribute to the pathos-physiology of the disorder. It was discovered the the DA intervention of the prefrontal cortex undergoes significant change up until adulthood which leads to Finlay’s hypothesis that the abnormal development of this system may be related to the emergence of schizophrenia. Experimental and clinical research portrayed the relationship between this system, and abnormalities in cognitive performance. Another interesting finding by Finlay (2001), was that impaired function of mesoprefrontal DA may be the causation of decreased density of DA- which contains nerve endings within the prefrontal cortex of afflicted individuals.
