In today’s world, it has become a normality for one to engage in social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Social media is becoming more popular with each passing year because of the many uses social media has. Social media, being one of the greatest things that humans have ever developed, now allows us to rapidly share information with anyone living anywhere in the world. In fact, social media not only affects regular users, but has now changed the way major platforms such as politics and businesses communicate with their consumers. According to Aristotle, the type of friendships that you want to strive for are those of ‘virtue’. Virtue friendships have a characteristic of being very selfless and genuine. They usually take long periods of time to develop and call for reciprocation. For the average human, virtue friendships certainly cannot be developed over a screen or any social networking site. These types of friendships require lots of time and are forged through common face to face interaction; they are held together from more than a Facebook like or a documented event. Another thing that social media does to us is that it makes us feel lonely. In Stephen Marche’s informational post “Is Facebook Making us Lonely?”, he brings in some interesting statistics comparing loneliness in past generations to this one. One study states that, “A 2010 AARP survey found that 35 percent of adults older than 45 were chronically lonely, as opposed to 20 percent of a similar group only a decade earlier. According to a major study by a leading scholar of the subject, roughly 20 percent of Americans—about 60 million people—are unhappy with their lives because of loneliness” (69) Why is it that social media make us lonely?
