In What Circumstances Should Abortion Be Permitted

During the 20th century, there were a great number of high profile, controversial Supreme Court cases. From Brown v. Board of Education to Employment Division, Department of Human Resources of Oregon v. Smith, no case stands out as much as Roe v. Wade. Roe v. Wade covered grounds that have never been dealt with before, bringing new issues and debates to the table, such as the right to privacy.

This paper will address the practice of abortion and will take a conditionally permissible stance. The reasons for the conditional permissibility of abortion is that, even though the existing fetus inside the mother is or will become human, it is just a question of when it becomes a moral concern. It will first address the opposing sides, the pro- and anti-abortion, and state their views discuss why they should be addressed. Then, it will go ahead and state that there are only a few cases in which a mother has the right and duty to have an abortion. Or course, it will stay on the conditionally permissible stance throughout the argument.

In conclusion, abortion is morally wrong. A life is sacred, both the mother’s and the infant’s. Having an abortion may be a huge stress relief for those women who were victims of rape. In these tragic situations the victims should not be obligated to have a child. Conceiving a child that resulted through this horrific circumstance can be a constant reminder to those victims of the trauma they went through. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, “among adult women an estimated 32, 101 pregnancies result from rape each year". This is a significantly large number, victims of rape are already in great distress, fear and grief and after the trauma they already experienced they should not have the added pressure to be obligated by society to conceive they do not want to. Rape victims have gone through enough mental trauma and that their psychological health should be valued more than the right to life of the fetus. It is a personal decision the victim should be allowed to make without any legal bindings. As quoted by Dr. David C. Reardon, "how can you deny an abortion to a twelve year old girl who is the victim of incest”?

The argument in the passage is whether or not abortion is permissible. The author state many times throughout the passage that abortion is wrong for a varying amount of reasons, but at times the passage can be confusing. The author tries to clarify as to what is a person and non-person, but within this part of the passage it become cloudy and could use some rewording to make it more clear to the readers on their stance on what makes a person. To make it more clear to the readers the author should have made the sentences less wordy and straight to the point. Also, the points about what makes the fetus a person are lacking in some strenght. Overall it was a clear conclusion that abortion should not be permissible.

However, keeping the child would mean having the responsibility to properly take care of another human life. If it is YOUR child, it is YOUR liability. Not being able to provide that sort of stability would be risking a child’s happy and healthy future. Adoption also allows for individuals, whether husband and wife with infertility problems, gay couple, lesbian couples, whatever the situation may be, gives them a chance at being parents. For many people it is easy to say that abortion is morally and virtually wrong but how can one say that if they have never been in that situation. There are two sides in the debate of keeping abortion legal or making it illegal. There are pro-choice people, who feel as though every female should have a choice in whether they want to carry their child or not. On the other hand there are pro-life people who feel as though just because the public cannot see the baby, the baby is still there no matter who wants to ignore them. Simply put, pro-life people do not agree in killing the baby and pro-choice people do agree in killing the baby. There are bumps in the road as you travel down your decision of becoming pro-life or choice.
