the Arms of an Angel” and there are dogs and cats sitting behind a closed kennel door looking at the camera with sad eyes. This breaks my heart every time I see this commercial or hear the song playing on the radio. There are many millions of animals that are unloved, neglected and abandoned in shelters each year because people do not participate in getting their animals’ spayed or neutered or the animals are over bred for profit.
Animal overcrowding in shelters is only one reason of many as to why pet owners should spay or neuter their pets, but it is the most important reason of all. Shelters all over the United States are past the overcrowded level and even dog rescue groups are finding it harder and harder everyday to find homes

When you think about all these situations, the amount of animals in a shelter can rapidly increase every day, and this is very sad that we have done this to our “furry friends”.
Spaying and neutering your animal can not only help with the overcrowding in shelters but can actually be beneficial to your home and pets. Male dogs and cats when un-neutered have a tendency to “mark” their property. When they mark their territory it can lead to a very unpleasant smell in and around your home. Have you ever walked a dog and noticed them peeing frequently on fire hydrants, trees, corners or certain sections in the yard? This would be your male animal stating that he is a male. When you neuter your male animal, this behavior decreases and thus you can have a cleaner smelling house. Also, it is a recognizes concept amongst pet owners that getting your animal “fixed” can help with behavioral issues such as aggression, dominance, and also sexual arousal around a female animal. Female dogs and cats go into a heat cycle, similar to that of a female human. Their cycle causes them to bleed for about two weeks and can make quite the mess if you are not planning for it. Also, spaying can help with the females’ behavior as well; they mellow down and are less fussy. If you’re a female you know that when you’re on your cycle you can be temperamental, it’s the same for female dogs and cats.
There is also health related issues that are more prominent in animals that aren’t
Cold concrete floors. Metal fences for walls. Fed once, maybe twice, a day. Constant noise. This is the reality of many shelter animals. Scared and alone. Some don’t even get the luxury of a fenced in slab of concrete, some just get wire cages. Shelters are running out of room. We have too many animals, plain and simple. And do you realize what many shelters have to resort to for this population problem? Euthanization. Those “kill shelters” that everyone boycotts, they only exist because we have too many stray animals. There are so many pitbulls, mutts, and mixes, that they outnumber the people that actually want them. Some measures have been put into place to help decrease the number of strays like the spay and neuter projects. But this takes
7.6 million animals enter the shelters and with that 2.7 million animals are euthanized in the shelter. The same amount euthanized gets adopted each year, which is depressing. One would think more would get adopted or simply taken in if lost to avoid the deaths or strays of animals such as the cats that was previously stated. Animals are human companions that show love and guard or are just fun to help people out in therapeutic ways. Humans take animals for granted with how we send them to shelters not caring if it’s going to end up with them dead in a week of being at that
The best way we can help solve the issue is by getting our own pets spayed or neutered.
An animal shelter is a place where stray, lost, abandoned, or surrendered animals, mostly dogs and cats and sometimes sick or wounded wildlife, are brought. Animal shelters are essential in the United States because of inattentive pet proprietorship and uncontrolled breeding of animals. People often get pets without a full understanding of the time, money, and space that they require. Regrettably, that recurrently results in pets being abandoned or abused by these owners. Apart from accountable breeders, owners should spay or neuter their pets to stop the serious overpopulation problem, which is happening in the United States. Shelters do not treat or stop the problem of unwanted pets but without them the stray pet population would be astronomical. There would be more problems with disease spread and an increased incidence of stray animal-induced injuries. A shelter should also be a domicile where animals could be benign and feel loved and taken care of; not just a drop off. The shelter in my community tries to do their best with their animals, but I feel that the shelter needs to be able to do their jobs better and for the animals to feel comfortable.
Some of the shelters in California are amazing, at Sonoma County’s animal shelter has new policies for the crowded conditions and are working to reduce the number of healthy animal’s that are killed. Dog and cat owners who may want to give up their pets have to make an appointment with the shelter staff to discuss alternatives. Healthy animals will be taken in only if the space is available, otherwise the owners must wait. According to one source, “Most public shelters have around 393,000 cats that enter public shelters and it increased to 25,000. About 278,000 cats were killed in shelters in
The North Shore Animal League will first discuss animal rights and how animal abuse and homelessness is at an all-time high today among animals. There will also be various pictures and statistics shown to offer the audience insight on which dog and cat breeds are the most abused and homeless. For example, due to their small size and temperament with people Chihuahuas are among one of the most abused and homeless dog breeds. The organization will then discuss their plan to remedy the issue of animal abuse and homelessness by opening up animal shelters in urban areas in Staten Island and Brooklyn to lower animal abuse and homelessness. These shelters will provide the animal’s food, water, and medicine, which are the main necessities for them to survive. By opening these new shelters, it will ensure the animal’s safety and well-being until people are ready to adopt and bring them home.
Well, luckily, there are shelters in different places that help animals that aren’t able to take care of themselves. Did you know that every year 3.3 million dogs and 3.2 million cats enter animal shelters in U.S.? If you think that figure was huge, now imagine around 1.5 million of them are being euthanized every year because the shelter doesn’t have enough money or volunteers (ASPCA) to take care of them. However, this number can be significantly reduced if we start to make a change. With my speech, I would like to persuade you to from now on look for pets in a shelter instead of a pet store. In order to do this, I will provide information about the differences between shelters and pet stores, reasons to adopt a pet, and how to do it.
Did you know about 25 million puppies and kittens are born into the United States each year? That’s more than 50,000 born each day in this country alone. Twenty five million pets produce yearly greatly exceeds the amount of willing families to take care of these animals that are born into the world. Even though, these massive amount of litters may in fact be completely healthy there is just not a sufficient enough of homes for this animals to be place in. statically reported by the humane society of the united states in October 2011 6 to 8 million animals who have no place to call their home are put into animal shelters. Unfortunately, due to the excessive surplus of these animals about half which is 3 to 4 million only make it out alive. The other half left to be euthanize by the shelter to make room for the new incoming animals. This turns out to be one animal euthanize every 8 sec. Pet overpopulation has been a serious problem throughout the nation for many years. The on ongoing cycle of bring unwanted litters of pets into the world makes it extremely difficult to reduce the amount of animals being euthanize across the nation each and every day. It’s important for people to understand the need to spay and neuter their family’s pets and all pets in general, all though people don’t understand that need its extremely important to take into account that these thousands of wanted any unneeded animals being born into the world each day will statically end up homeless, place in
to begin with, in a statistic brain article the author, Seth mentions, “The average number of animals that fall victim to hoarding is 250,000.” There are many missed placed animals that need loving homes and shelters try to provide that for each animal. Although, when trying to achieve this goal they often take more then they can chew. Mrs. Tempesta stated, “That the shelter often takes in more animals then their quota allows if animals comes in critical condition.” Overcrowding often leads to a shortage in supplies for the shelters. This leads to the animals not being taken care of to the best of their abilities once again. According to Four Paws Rescue inc, they are always looking for donations to keep their animals well taken. This is a great way to get involved in small towns such as Ruston, and it makes a difference in some animals lives. In conclusion, overcrowding in shelters is a serious effect of animal
Population Control: Help control the U.S. pet population with spay and neuter services. The Humane Society notes an estimated 6 to 8 million homeless animals enter U.S. shelters every year, with less than half of these pets adopted and the rest euthanized.
Countless lives locked away in cages and forgotten about have overwhelmed our society, it has left blood stains on our history as a species and if history has taught us anything, it’s that we have a choice to change our ways of adjusting to situations. A war which was fought in pursuit of ending such criminal means, yet we as human beings do little to nothing to end the horrific crimes of animal deaths in shelters. It is no secret that this world has become infused with problems that have extended from one side of the globe to the other. Amongst these problems lies a terrible truth: nearly every year, sums of almost eight million cats and dogs have been placed in shelters around the world. Out of these vast numbers, half will be
There is an alarming amount of stray dogs on the street and the number only increases due to the fact that these dogs were not fixed. These medical procedures will help control overcrowding in dog shelters. Since these shelters do not have the space or the funds to care for all of the unwanted dogs they end up euthanized. All pet owners should be required to spay/neuter their pets unless the owner applies for breeder rights if the pet is to be breed. Spay/neutering will not only help prevent the population problems within the shelters but outside as well and it will help prevent these pet from becoming euthanized.
I believe that every pet should be spayed or neutered to prevent the birth of more animals and the continuing rise of homeless animals in shelters. Your dog is the best dog in the world, right? Sure! We all think our pets are the best that has ever existed, but in doing so, there are many shelter animals that are already potty trained, over the puppy chewing stage, and are up to date on routine vaccinations that will never get a chance at life, all because they were passed up for a cute little puppy.
I think that we should improve the animal shelters for multiple reasons. One reason for improving animal shelters is that the animals do not have enough space to run and play outside. Animal shelters like the SPCA and Citizens for Animal Protection have very little space to let the dogs run and play. If you do not play with the animals then they might be hyper and elderly people might not want to adopt them. Also if they have more space to run and play they can also use the restroom outside.
In my opinion, this is a terrible issue. These animals are dying because of this with no fault of their own. If the overpopulation in shelters continues we will not have a place to put all of these animals except for in the ground. A shelter is supposed to be used as a safe place for lost, homeless pets, but it is being abused and turned into a trashcan due to the overpopulation. Some may argue that there are “no kill” shelters, and although that is true to some extent, it is not entirely true. The sad truth is that “in most cases even when a shelter calls themselves a ‘no-kill’ shelter it simply means they give the dogs they don't want to a shelter that IS a kill shelter” (Maguire). Overpopulation is costing animals their lives. Do you know what else overpopulation is costing? Us. It costs the United States taxpayers $2 billion a year “to impound, shelter, euthanize, and dispose of homeless animals” (“Animal Overpopulation”). These statistics are hard to take in, but they are very real and this is why I think something needs to change.
