Inappropriate Gender Roles

What is a gender role? It is the behaviors that are considered acceptable for people based on their sex. Throughout history, societies have constructed gender roles. As times change, roles tend to change. In the twenty-first century, American society has created the role of women being great academics and men only being athletes. This has not always been true in the past. Although America is not perfect, it is working on intellectual and physical equality.

Despite Gender identity and sexual orientation being used interchangeably in conversation they are not connected what so over. Gender is an individual's sense of self as opposed to your physical characteristic. Rothenberg states in Part 1 Gender as a process , Stratification and Structure that “ as a process, gender create the social differences that define “won and “man”. In social interaction throughout their lives, individuals learn what is expected…..thus simultaneously construct and maintain”. Which shows us that gender usually dictates an individual's behavior and appearance based on their biological sex.

According to the articles, sex is assigned at birth and refers to the biological status of a person such as male or female. Gender refers to the socially constructed roles such as behaviors, activities, and attributes that a society considers appropriate for boys, men, girls, and women.

We tend to put everyone in one of two categories when in actuality there should be many more because someone's gender identity could differ from their sex, but the common belief is that gender identity pairs in accordance with one's sex.

The gender of a person is the masculine or feminine attributes of that individual with respect to the psychological and biological role in society. (Magar, 2009) A gender role can be defined as the way that a person lives in society with respect to its lifestyle. It can be argued that over time the major differences between men and women’s gender roles have faded. In the past traditional roles have been based in their society by their biological orientation. (Magar, 2009) Gender roles can also be described as the behavior and attitudes that are expected of men and women in a society. (Faqs.org, 2011) Although different cultures impose different expectations, many cultures have the same basic gender roles.

Gender or sex roles are the expected patterns of behavior assumed to follow from a person's sex. Gender roles are not natural. They are formed by and vary within society, culture, geographic location, politics and time. There is a strong relationship between the social construction of gender and compulsory heterosexuality. People are programmed into certain gender roles and social categories through socialization and interaction with others.

This is an important distinction because attempted understanding of gender identity can be interfered with stereotypes of sexual orientation. For example, those outside the gender binary may first define as and fit into the gay or lesbian community because of their interest in playing princesses or trucks, anything not expected to fit into their gender, before realizing they are transgender or nonbinary individuals due to social expectations of how they should act being inconsistent with their gender expression (Understanding The Social). It is important to define the contrast among sex and sexual orientation with gender to understand its definition, and what influences it.

Gender roles decide what are the “appropriate” manners in which one should conduct themselves according to their gender. This includes the way one dresses, acts, speaks, and thinks. Gender roles are the standards set by a society for each of the genders. Most people will not have a problem with the gender roles established but they can be very harmful to some people. Basic gender roles consist of women being associated with the color pink and men being associated with blue. Roles like these set the norms for our society and determine in the long run what is acceptable and not.

There are numerous theories regarding the development of one’s gender identity. Gender identity refers how one identifies as either male, female or transgender.

Gender roles are categories that characterize what it means to be feminine and masculine in society, on how people think about gender as they relate to one another (Adams et al., 2013). For example, women are expected to be accommodating and emotional, while men are usually expected to be self-confident and aggressive, this shows how men and women are to behave in society. However, these sayings were taught to individuals based on norms, or standards created by a society which is called Gender Socialization (p. 318). Growing up as a child, we were taught as girls to play with dollhouses, pretend kitchen sets, cleaning supplies and play dress up. Whereas boys are taught to play with cars, sports equipment’s, action figures, and weapons. However, if a boy was playing with dollhouses, or playing dress up, he would be considered gay, or not masculine and looked down upon by society, and families. Gender and sexuality can be comprehended through social science. Social science is “the study of human society and of individual relationships in and to society” (free dictionary, 2009). The study of social science deals with different aspects of society such as politics, economics, and the social aspects of society. Gender identity is closely interlinked with social science as it is based on an identity of an individual in the society. Sexuality is “the condition of being characterized and distinguished by sex” (free dictionary, 2009). There are different gender identities such as male, female, gay, lesbian, transgender, and bisexual that exists all around the world. There is inequality in gender identities and dominance of a male

1. Gender identity is one's personal experience of one's own gender. Gender identity can correlate with assigned sex at birth, or can differ from it completely. Usually, People get their identity depending on the society that they are surrounded by. Most of the times, sexual orientation comes from society influences and learned behaviors. In my personal opinion, I got my gender identity from my parents, since there has no other believe in my household other than, if you are a male you are treaded as a male. In the Dominican Republic there are many Taboos when it comes to homosexuality. This means that people try to cover and make their kids think that it does not exist. It is difficult there to see two men holding hands walking on the street or to hear about someone that is homosexual. Also religion plays the biggest role in this topic. In my culture it is believed that God will punish people with sexual desire toward someone of the same sex. My father used to tell me male chauvinist things like, men don’t cry or men don’t feel any pain, and that is not true. The problem with these is that, imagine a child in school crying for some reason, the other kids are going to call him name because they learned that crying is not a characteristic of a man. This is a conduct learned through several generations, and it is not changing any time soon.
