Today’s classrooms are becoming more and more diverse with students that have disabilities and those that come from different cultures. It is important for educators to ensure that their teaching strategies are appropriate for all of the children in their classroom. When it comes to the classroom there can be many cultural challenges that educators will have to address to ensure that all students are growing and developing appropriately. Educators need to make sure that they are capable of addressing each of their
Education is a very complex and evolving process. Today, teaching entails educating a diverse population according to their unique individual needs. Schools are comprised of individuals with different races, beliefs, cultures, values, languages, social statues, etc. While considering both the historical and preset-day issues, I am able to see many parallels between racial integration in schools and integration of students with disabilities.
In the article, A Common-Core Challenge: Learners with Special Needs, the article outlines the proposed plans and conflicts associated with a common core assessment in education. The article highlights the struggles of reaching students within a regular classroom with diversity, then divides into the accommodations and modifications needed to give the same assessment to a student with a disability. With the introduction of Common Core and Smarter Balance, general assessments have become the norm to track a student and a teacher’s progress. Many teachers are struggling with the accommodations needed and not compromising the assessment. Some accommodations questioned in the article are communication devices and being able to read portions to a visually impaired student. Both sides believe that the accommodations can compromise
Standard based educational services for our societies students has transformed through the years. The establishment of the National Governor’s Association set of common core standards (CCS) has gained widespread attention according to Allman and Lewis (556). Within this shift, general education teachers and teachers of students with disabilities are being held more accountable for their student’s growth and knowledge. These standards have been adopted and implemented throughout our nation in order for our youth to be better prepared for higher learning once they
Educating students with disabilities has evolved immensely throughout history. Initially, students with disabilities were isolated and institutionalized. Society 's perception was that it was not necessary or beneficial to invest time or resources into this group of people (Spaulding & Pratt, 2015; Dybwad, 1990; Winzer, 1998). Direct advocacy and litigations caused changes in federal legislation (Griffith, 2015; Lloyd & Lloyd, 2015). Due to the civil rights movement, stu-dents with disabilities became part of the public educational system. Our current system has evolved to the level that educators work as teams to create individual learning plans for students
Teachers will undeniably continue to face the challenge of being able to teach all students who have learning disabilities. They will continue on the journey in researching the availability of treatments, services, and new theories. There are numerous tools available in teaching; however, discovering exactly which tools will work for all with some type of learning disability, will continue to be a work in progress. Teachers will persist in expanding their education on how to effectively teach special needs children, because of the desire and passion they have for their
Students with disabilities have altered the environments of the classrooms dramatically overtime. Throughout the struggle of inclusion, the views on students with disabilities, and the way students and their families are treated in the classroom teachers have found a way to overcome these obstacles and attempt the perfect classroom setting for disabled children.
Incorporating technology in the classroom is a leading trend among educators in the 21st century. Teacher use classroom websites, technology tools, and online web assessments to keep parents and students informed, improve instruction, and individualize learning. Using technology to support communication helps keep both students and parents informed on what is happening in the classroom and the students’ academic progress. Integrating technology in the classroom helps increase student engagement and participation. Students use technology tools to help reinforce instruction and teachers may use it as a form of remediation. Technology can also help with differentiating instruction with the use of online assessments. Incorporating technology in the classroom can increase students’ success in the classroom and beyond.
When it comes to teaching, it is important that you, as a teacher, have the best interest for your students at heart. Also, it is important that you make sure that you provide your students with the abilities that they will need in order to succeed not only in the classroom, but also in everyday life. Although this may appear to be an easy task, it could be problematic, such that there are students in the classroom who may have certain disabilities that you will have to attend to. It is up to the teacher to attend to these student’s needs and prepare them for things that they will face everyday.
Equal education should be available to all children without any exclusion or segregation based on mental or physical disability (Woolfolk, A.E., Winne, P.H., & Perry, N.E, 2010). Teaching should, therefore, be adjusted to meet each student’s learning styles and needs as much as possible as each child is unique in the way that they learn. A teacher should get to know a child’s personality as well as their strengths, skills and weaknesses and use information from previous teachers and parents, as well, in order to get a better understanding of how that child learns best. Teachers must, therefore, always be prepared to encounter students’ different abilities and learning styles. Thus, instructors must set different expectations and goals for each student according to their abilities and modify the curriculum if needed. Additionally, educational resources should always be accessible to students in order for them to excel to their full capacity and to teachers in order to help them achieve this success.
The modern classroom has many challenges that face it. Shrinking budgets, less parental involvement, higher expectations, and growing class sizes, just to name a few. If this list was not daunting enough you also have the special needs students that have an array problems in your classroom that need specialized attention, lessons and seating. There are many forms of diverse learners from students who suffer from ADHD to physical disabilities to students with autism to ones that are bullied in school. There are so many things going on in our students lives we sometimes forget they have lives, pressures and disabilities that affect their performance and attitude in our class that have a profound impact on how they learn. For this paper I
According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, students with disabilities should be placed in a “least restrictive environment.” One of the main ideas of this act was to improve the learning experiences of students with disabilities by giving them learning opportunities outside of a special education classroom. The number of students with disabilities being placed in their general education classrooms is increasing more and more each year. The U.S Department of Education’s 27th annual report to Congress on the implementation of The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2005) indicates that the number of students with disabilities in general education classrooms has risen to almost 50 percent. This is about a 17 percent increase from the 1997 U.S
The key to any successful school district is the administration. Teachers essentially provide structure, organization, and the background of a child’s future. To educate students with learning disabilities, it is essential that the staff has the training and resources needed for the appropriate people, place, and time (Lazarus) (What is Inclusion, 2001, n.p). It is unrealistic to expect that regular education teachers will always be aware of the latest research or be able to readily adapt the school's
Technology has significantly evolved within the past decade. There are many users who are eager to explore all the new devices, which have slowly worked their way into the classrooms of students in America. “In 1994 the Educate America Act was adopted; this Act authorized state planning for improving student achievement through integration of technology into the curriculum” (Goddard, 2002, p.19). Almost two decades later in 2010, the Obama Administration announced The National Education Technology Plan.
The integration of technology and the classroom has become a supported notion from educators, software manufacturers and parents. They believe that a student’s learning can be enhanced with technology focusing on efficiency and effectiveness. In the area of post-secondary education where costs are much higher for students, the belief of using technology in the classroom is much higher. This is because of the investment students take on in hopes of gaining the necessary skills to land a career job in the now competitive workforce. Learning Objects have become the new tool for students to achieve their goals of a rewarding education. This assignment will look into top Learning Objects and determine whether they are effective for students in educating them. This will include discussing MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and Difference Engine. I will then conclude with my personal opinion on the use of technology in higher level education.
