Individualism vs Collectivism Happiness is the main goal of the majority, however everyone has different views on how to achieve becoming truly content. There are many different theories on which is the correct route one must take as a human being. Two of the most common ideas that people follow as a way of life are individualism and collectivism. These ways of living are nothing alike, in fact, they are complete opposites. However, it is nearly impossible to live a happy and positive life by following only one of these ideas. As presented in The Dead Poets Society and transcendental writings, such as “Civil Disobedience” written by Henry David Thoreau, a balance between collectivism and individualism is proven to be a necessity in order to live a happy life. The Dead Poets Society offers an example of when collectivism is essential in life, when Knox shows up at Chris’ school without consulting anyone else, the audience learns that he should have asked others for their opinions because as a result of his impulsiveness he creeps her out and makes her uncomfortable while making a fool of himself. If Knox had asked his friends what to do they could have provided a better way to get her attention, like perhaps writing a letter. Henry David Thoreau also acknowledges that collectivism is needed in “Civil Disobedience” when he says “All men recognize the right of revolution; that is, the right to refuse allegiance to, and to resist, the government when it’s tyranny or it’s inefficiency are great and unendurable”. By introducing the thought with “All men,” Thoreau is indicating that overthrowing a tyranny is not the duty of simply one man, but rather men as a whole and collectivism is required to live in balance and
