How important is the role of choice (re: freedom) when we consider the idea of individuality? What if a person chooses the kind of happiness as created and maintained in Brave New World?
Is this the kind of happiness we are in fact choosing nowadays? Are we more willing to sacrifice our individuality for the sake of stability (re: collective, or job security) and happiness? What are you willing to sacrifice in order to be happy? Recall that in Brave New World, religion, history, art, family, and love were sacrificed.
By choosing to accept or reject, a person expresses their individuality, even if they choose a way of life that seeks to erase their individuality.
What would Sartre say about this? And Frankl?
The one thing that is said that makes us an individual is our emotions that control our minds. Individuality is essential to the

The role of choice or freedom allows a person to make there own decisions as well as being able to create your on path to knowledge. One who doesn't control or make their own decisions or desires and impulses are not their own, is said to have no character. A mind that is controlled, is no more than a robot which has no character. If one chooses the kind of happiness as created and maintained in Brave New World they will have no individuality, there will be no love or learning what love is, family is not a thought, there will be no knowledge of science, as well as history, or creating art, and religion. The stability that we are choosing now days can somewhat reflect Brave New World happiness in some ways and not. I do believe that some people are willing to sacrifice there individuality for the sake of there stability for example: job security gives you a peace of mind when it comes to being financially stable, it also gives you peace of mind when it comes to keeping a roof over your family head. This job might come
I strongly believe that individuality should be valued over conformity. Today I will tell you how precious and rare individuality is, and why we should value it over conformity.
In Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, a new society is created to secure happiness for all the people living in it. By doing this, they sacrifice truth, choice, family, science, and art. The government provides them with everything they need to be happy in life because they agreed to give up complete control of their lives. If I were given the choice, I would live in the world we live in now rather than the Brave New World. Like John, a “Savage” born outside the world and then brought into it, I think, “Well, I’d rather be unhappy than have the sort of false, lying happiness you were having here” (Huxley 179). Even though there would be times when I am uncomfortable, unhappy, in pain, even though I would have to experience loss and disappointment, at least I would be living a full life full of emotion and some purpose.
Humans live in a world in which every day they encounter numerous choices. The way they decide and the outcomes of their decisions define their lives. Their day to day life essentially revolves around the choices they make. As a whole, a community benefits or suffers from the outcomes of its choices. Freedom of choice is the grant to an individual or community to make its own choices out of free will and without restrictions (Pereboom,2003). This is essay will discuss that though freedom choice leads to variety in life, it does not necessarily guarantee satisfaction. It will also argue that although some choice is undoubtedly better than none, more is not always better than less. It will then consider the implications of the paradox of
Is independence, happiness? Independence gives a person the freedom to do what they want, when they want to do it, as long as the person is not inflicting harm to themself or others. Susan B. Anthony, a women’s right activist says so in her quote, “Independence is happiness.” Anthony seeks independence from men telling them how they should act and thinks that as a free woman she will be happy and so will other women. Anthony’s logic behind the statement is supported by Janie in Their Eyes Were Watching God, and evidence from the haitian revolution First, Janie demonstrates that independence is happiness, in Their Eyes Were Watching God.
Happiness and comfort occur when one has improved their state from a prior reference point; it is not a stationary site or goal, it is an ongoing endeavor. The Brave New World has eliminated hardships and as a result paused emotion and essentially removed happiness from
Serenity Schaefer World Literature 12- 15- 14 Effecting an Individual Irresponsible activities seen in younger generations are used as an escape from life's tedious bustle. Between sexual endeavors and the exploitation of addictive drugs, humans place themselves in a depressed state without realizing that they’re now unable to reach genuine happiness.
In the world today, people are not as in tune with nature as they should be. They are far too attached to the rules and restrictions of society to realize their individuality is being stifled, snuffed out, done away with. Societal rules expect that one understands without asking questions. However, that essence of individuality is essential. Without it, there are no new ideas, nothing to change, nothing to improve.
“If one’s different, one’s bound to be lonely.” This is a line stated by John the Savage in the novel: Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. This quote arguably summarizes one of the core themes of the book. On the second reading of the first line, the thought arises if this is very far from the truth of our present-day society here in the real world? Hipster culture in contemporary society was an attempt to strive to be “special” or “different than the masses”. But is this not the very thing that makes us similar at the end of the day, or is the whole individualism issue just an illusion that is also evidently present in the novel? In this essay, these topics will be explored with evidence from the book and from my own experience in the world.
putting a hat on a snowy day. waking up early on a Sunday morning. avoiding that cheesecake after a great meal. choices. we make those choices in our everyday life.we don't question these choices because we already know why we choose to do these decisions. we put on a hat because its cold. we wake early to feel revived.we avoid that yummy cheesecake because we want to avoid those extra calories. while reading, The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin and Arriving at perfection by Benjamin Franklin, coming to a conclusion on how a person can choose happiness was not as complicated as it seemed. A person chooses happiness through self-motivation, in other words to make one a better self. There are times where we want to better ourselves but for
The Flawed Pursuit of Happiness In the pursuit of happiness, society ultimately deprives itself of important aspects of life. Often they stand to sacrifice and compromise with the reality of things and succumb to surrounding pressures. In Aldous Huxley’s novel, Brave New World, the World State prioritizes happiness above all, however it contains many flaws as it lacks in individualism and truth. To begin with, the World State sacrifices their citizens’ individuality for happiness by abolishing creativity, freedom and solitude.
The most important aspect between freedom and the pursuit of happiness is your ability to freely react to your environment in any way you choose. This will allow all individuals to live how they choose, including, paving your own pathway to happiness. Every individual has his or her own pathway to focus on and Theophilos states that you have the freedom to become who you are. In other words, you should not focus on pleasing others, but the first step to happiness is to focus on yourself and why you were put on this
Does being more of an individual open doors for that person, than of that someone who is afraid to no longer adhere to or has never had to break societal normalities? Considerable amounts of evidence exist in all types of works that answer each and every one of those questions, including both fiction and nonfiction books, letters, and informative pieces.
Different people think, live, view, and judge in distinct ways. That’s what makes life so interesting. The great diversity of the world sometimes has an effect on certain people. Humanity itself has ways of expressing its differences, for example there’s; art, music, fashion, and hobbies, etc. All these are factors that can help identify ones personality, lifestyle, and views on certain topics, etc. This helps define us in a way, it’s a form of expression, whether personal or not.
We are always caring about ourselves and always making sure that we are the best at everything. But personally, the way I view things, life is made for us to enjoy these things. The idea of going out, looking at new things and hang with your friends and family is what we desire most. Instead of being cooped up in a house, it is much better to get out and have fun. That is what human nature is, we look forward to what fun new things we can do for the next day. We want to create a life where we are able to look back on and not regret. Which associates with what Hobbes said about us wanting more than happiness is security and stability. Security and stability leads to our happiness because it is something that is considered to be irresistible to human nature. Since society has already formed up this way and it's impossible to go back to who we were before.
In the poem “Choices” by, Allen Steble she talks about the choices people could make and she says the lines that impacted me as a reader the most which were “We all have a choice to live a lie or be ourselves to laugh and cry or to follow someone else” these lines show the choices we could make to be happy with no hesitation people who want to be happy would not think of it twice and would make a decision that could benefit them and the people around them. When you make a decision to be yourself and not follow others your consequence will be more happiness which is a very good
