The Industrial Revolution, while a stepping stone to the technologies used today, was not an event altogether well-received by the people living in its era. It brought changes to the economic system of Europe that many were not willing to accept, including a shift from rural to urban life. According to Professor Michael Mandelbaum, traditional systems of land ownership, production, and social classes were made obsolete early into the Industrial Revolution, (Doc 5) and replaced with entirely new systems, whereupon land was more spread among the populace and often owned by capitalists and businessmen, and a new social class, the middle class, was created.
