Welcome to the Infant Room: We will be working on crossing the midline, or transferring toys from one hand to the other. Crossing this midline means that you take your right hand and scratch you left arm. This will then give the infant the practice it needs to develop good fine motor skills. Crossing the is good for developing bilateral coordination skills. First, the two sides of the body need to learn to work together doing the same thing. This activity is an important one so that you are creating a dominate hand. Children need to be right handed in order to make it in the right handed culture. The earlier you start the better they can develop.
Another activity we can do in the infant room is Swats and Kicks or Sitting under a Mobile or

According to the Child Development Institute, “75 percent of brain development occurs after birth”. Physical play helps a child to develop, fine and gross motor skills, socialization, personal awareness, language, creativity and problem solving are improved. Ideal physical play incorporates play with social interactions and problem solving (Wonderly 2013). These are games that children can play anywhere. They can go home and teach their parent to be active and participate in these activities to get some exercise themselves. Another great thing for the childhood room is to play board games such as Connect Four, Memory, or UNO. Social cognitive theorists emphasize playing board games to help the child in becoming a self-regulated learner. Games can exercise children’s decision making function and self-regulation skills, and allow them to practice these skills once they have a game down pat. Once the skills are down pat, switch it up on them and create a different way to practice decision making. Through strategizing, a child’s working memory, inhibitory control, and flexibility have to work together to support effective play. (Stregelin 2002) This will teach them to get along with others and authoritative figures. This is needed to respect others when they grow up. A …show more content…
This is good exercise and can build confidence. In a recently published study in the Games for Health Journal, researchers found that active video games — the kind that involve standing up and moving around while a game console’s sensors track your movements — are more effective at conjuring intense physical activity in young children than regular old unstructured outdoor play”. Physical activities that combine the mind and movement, such as yoga and Tae Kwon Do, also help children develop their ability to focus attention and control their actions. This is good for all children to learn.
Wii is currently emerging in K-12 classrooms as a means for teaching the arts, physical education, English as a second language, science, geography, and other topics in innovative ways. Rethinking how children learn has been beneficial to kids and playing an organized game can teach the child leadership and listening skills as well as patience, social collaboration and teamwork. (SOUTER 2008). All these skills are needed later in life to become productive
Today is my first day doing my practice observation in the Infant Room Classroom Number 3, my fears are how the infants go reaction to see me because I am new person for them that they never have seen before, how the teacher go feel to have a student in the classroom, if they will support me and cooperate with practice, and how the parents will response to see a new teacher in the classroom, I know for my teaching experience that parents are very special about the people who is round to their children.
Fine motor control allows infants to exercise their hand muscles which helps them to play with toys. Some atypical behaviors are keeping hands closed without opening them and not grasping when objects are placed in the palm of the hand.
Did you know that play expands a child’s learning and development? Once parents understand that play is crucial in their child’s life then they can begin to help their son or daughter be the best he or she can be. According to Lev Vygotsky “play shapes how children make sense of their worlds, how they learn thinking skills, and how they acquire language.” After spending time at the Bombeck Center I learned that children play in many diverse ways, thus learning numerous new things within each center in which they interact. Lev Vygotsky along with Jean Piaget researched the need for guided social interaction as well as the necessity for spontaneous, self-discovered learning. The Bombeck Center focuses on a play-based learning curriculum to ensure a child’s ability to access social interactions and self-discoveries at the tip of their fingers.
Before receiving the Real Care Baby, I knew it took a lot of work to care for a newborn. I now know that it takes a lot more than I thought. The forty-eight hours I had the baby were frustrating, exhausting, and stressful. It’s a lot of hard work, but I’m sure if it were a real child it would totally be worth it.
Regardless of how busy things become, it is important for a child to play. The benefits for a child are overwhelmingly positive both physically and mentally. Engage them in structured play as often as unstructured play. Sitting a child in front of the “tv babysitter” may seem convienent but is only hurting your child developmentally. It is important for a child to play whether it is free or unstructured and that they are engaged. Make time for them to play as children being able to play is a primary
This assignment is all about play and learning for children and young people. Play is engaging in an activity for enjoyment and pleasure however can also be used for learning purposes and development in children and young people. Play activities can be planned by practitioners within the setting or can be free-play, when a child goes off and plays by themselves. Play can be carried out individually or in groups and can also be carried out in different environments such as indoors and outdoors. ‘Research confirms the importance of play for infants in developing children’s brains and minds.’ (http://playtherapy.org.uk/ChildrensEmotionalWellBeing/AboutPlayTherapy/MainPrinciples/PlayDefinition) this is why practitioners encourage young children

In addition, during my observation, Sydney was able to demonstrate the following gross motor skills. Sydney was placed in a sitting position on the table as well on the floor and was able to sit up unassisted for brief periods of time. Although Sydney appeared to be unstable at times, her mother closely spotted her to ensure her safety. Most babies are able to sit up by themselves unassisted for short periods of time (Oswalt, n.d.). By being able to sit upright and support the weight of her head in the proper position, shows Sydney has developed her core body strength and has met this developmental milestone. In addition, while lying on a blanket on her stomach, Sydney was able to lift her chest and head. According to American Pregnancy Association, most infants at 6 months old can lift their chest and part of their stomach while lying face down (First,
During my four days with the baby I had new developments for how I felt towards children. My initial thoughts on this baby project was that it would be easy and fun because of my experience with my little brother and sister, but boy was I wrong. The project was a lot of work. You don’t get a fun interactive baby, you only get the bad parts of the baby. You get the crying, diaper using, and hungry baby. It’s a lot of work.
1) Sitting on the floor with the baby and talking about toys, the colours and shapes feeling the texture of it with them. Rolling a ball to them and helping them to roll it back.
Development is a main part of child's life whether it is a gross motor, sensory, cognitive or fine motor skills. In the toddler age motor skills is developing continuously in child. My first activity is a piggy bank fun. In this age, we cannot give them real coin because of choking hazard. So, i used tokens of different color. Every child love to put coin in the box. The next activity is a straw game. Both of the game is about fill and empty the container. This activity will help to enhance their fine motor skill. Fine motor skill means the co-ordination between hand and fingers with the use of eyes. It will help them to concentrate and engage in play. Children will notice the object with its size, shape and color. This activity will help children to learn about some objects are heavy, lighter or slippery. They can improve their grip for object. This development is very essential in child because not only the fine motor skill develop but they can understand how the world
Play contributes to children’s “physical, emotional and social well-being” (Else, 2009, p.8) and through play, the child’s holistic development and well-being is being constantly accounted for as is it led by the individual. The child decides what s/he wants to do and does it; it is
“For young children, there is no distinction between play and learning; they are one and the same. Playing is a priority in early childhood, yet not all play is the same” (Butler, 2008, p. 1). Since the beginning of mankind children have imitated adults and learned to survive through play. Evidence of this includes toys and board games from 6,000 years ago that have been found in Egypt and Asia (Dollinger, 2000). In the last two centuries, child’s play has been observed and studied by theorists and recognized as an important tool for adult life. Three theorists that studied children and spent their lives researching how children develop were Erik Erikson, Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky. These theorists agreed that from the time a child is
Alice Sterling Honig, author of an article “Play: Ten Power Boosts for Children’s Early Learning”, states that “children gain powerful knowledge and useful social skills through play” (p.126). Honig, who believes that play is essential for young children’s development, points out ten ways in which children can learn through play activity.
The goal of an activity gym is that your baby can develop sensory movement and abilities. If they are positioned by a device and cannot move, this thwarts the real purpose.
