I assess how diversity influences occupational opportunity and participation of individuals through my personal experience working as a pre-school teacher. While pre-school is not a formal educational environment, however, to many of the children attending pre-school was their first exposure to diversity, as well as a safe environment to participate in meaningful occupations, learning and playing as a group.
Taking each child into consideration, I came up with different approaches to work with the children corresponding to their behaviors, I often apply my education and training in Psychology to help and assist the children in my classroom. As a bilingual, I acted as both translator and interpreter to work with Chinese speaking families and
- Reflect on, with the children, their own responses to diversity and how they would include and respect a new child that comes to the school. For example greeting them and how they would make them feel like they belong.
he trouble with diversity: How we learned to identity and ignore inequality. The article “The trouble with diversity: How we learned to identity and ignore inequality”, was written by Walter Benn Michaels and published by NY times on Dec, 24,2006. The author argues that The Great Gatsby give us a vision of our society divided into races rather than into economic classes. The Trouble with Diversity argues that our enthusiastic celebration of "difference" masks our neglect of the difference that really matters—the one between rich and poor.
Throughout the novel, the puritans seem to judge Hester so harshly that they can’t see through to her true nature. They continue to isolate her from society and talk negatively about her behind her back. The puritans actions and beliefs can be related to a scaffold. Both seemingly innocent, but once someone understands their true nature, they are the true enemy. The scaffold has such a negative connotation for the puritans. This is very ironic because the puritans are very negative towards the people that stand on the scaffold. Both the scaffold and the puritans represent some sort of evil and a form of disrespect.
I like the fact that he had a great deal of hope for the future because he made commended that the situation of the United States has happened in the past. History has a tendency to repeat itself. Diversity leads to more novel ideas, more opportunities for all, better access to variety of talents, and more opportunities to learn from others.
Diversity in college campuses has increased, which has let people assume that racism decreased and acceptance expanded gradually, however minorities still face prejudice and discrimination. Harvard University presented a research where they gathered college students from 4 particular public universities and questioned them about the social behavior they have experienced or witnessed. In the contrary, they discovered that college students have encountered racist comments or negative facial expressions towards them from Caucasians. This has led to propositions for instance, improving social conduct between children in school, more gratification in regard of one’s culture and positive outlook toward the culture of others because America’s obsession with race and racial attitudes continues to affect individuals emotionally. It is urgent to spread diversity at a younger stage of life, for upcoming children that are starting school. The need of role models around the nation is necessary and relevant to help multicultural education in the schools. Diversity has become significant since people all over the country are passionate about others knowing where they come from and making it possible of a more diverse society in the future.

“It is time for our parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength “Maya Angelou. Today, diversity has very much diminished. This, however, has not gone unnoticed. America is moving to a new standard in which diversity and individuality are encouraged more than uniformity and conformity as individuals have began to embrace their unique differences and accept that our differences are what gives us unity in this country.
Why Is Diversity in a Campus Important? College, for most teenagers seems to be one of the most challenging thing in life. It opens doors for us that high school doesn't. College also can change us in ways that we might never imagine before. Behavior refers to the actions or reactions of an object or organism, usually in relation to the environment. Behavior can be conscious or unconscious, overt or covert, and voluntary or involuntary. Behavior is controlled by the nervous system; the complexity of the behavior is related to the complexity of the nervous system. Generally, organisms with complex nervous systems have a greater capacity to learn new responses and thus adjust their behavior. Human behavior is the collection of activities by human beings and influenced by culture, attitudes, emotions, ethnicity, gender, ethics, religion, authority, persuasion, and/or coercion. The behavior of people falls within a range with some
There are many reasons for why the diversity in our population changes, and why the entire population changes as well. Some of the factors include the modification and research on our own genetics. Other factors include when statistics about our very own population turn out to be inaccurate. Even the lack of work in order to help provide for families is a contributing factor in all of this. One great impact on the population is when our life spans are just short enough to let the next incoming generation take care of us while we grow old and die out, which contributes to how our population will turn out.
Our country is a diverse place, where people come from different places. But recently our speaker for the TED talk had quoted that “Subjects were exposed to new stores that were negative to Muslim they became more accepting to military attacks on Muslim countries and policies that curtail the right of American Muslim” (Mogahed), people are proving that even though we’re a diverse country we don’t give free rights to just anyone. Its giving people the right to treat everyone differently just because of who they are. In our society, it's very hard to find a place where there isn't any diversity and people who believe in other things that what you believe in as in religion.
The Iroquois Constitution was an agreement between the Five Nations of the Iroquois with many rules that all nations abided by. Under the constitution, the Five Nations agreed to three main principals: peace, equity and justice. These nations passed on these agreements and rules through oral history and shared mythologies. In studying myths and religions around the world, Joseph Campbell recognized four functions of myth: mystical, cosmological, sociological, and psychological. Campbell noticed that these functions could be found in most explorer stories and origin stories throughout various cultures and societies. The rules my family has established in my household are similar to the Iroquois Constitution, Campbell’s functions of myth, and can be an inspiration for when I become a parent.
Diversity is normally thought of on the surface level. The general population usually takes into account physical/demographic characteristics as indicators of diversity. People tend to focus on aspects like gender or skin color, which limits and narrows the definition of diversity. This causes neglecting to include other external dimensions like recreational habits, educational background, etc. In the book, diversity is examined by various scholars, all of whom perceive its definition in different ways. This class has taught me that diversity is an expansive topic and our class presentations gave me the opportunity to examine a specific area of it. Each presentation offered greater insight into the perspectives of individuals that
Angela Y. Lee, Consumer Psychologist and Professor of Marketing at Northwestern University, delivered a speech at the 44th annual conference of the Association for Consumer Research (ACR) in Chicago, Illinois October 3-6, 2013 discussing the definition of diversity and its advantages in the workforce. After conducting a brief survey of her colleagues in regard to their individual favorite co-authors, and what similarities they share that influenced their selections. This study based on the attraction of personal similarity and how we as people naturally gravitate toward other individuals and groups who share common interests. Lee states, "similarity reduces uncertainty." (Lee, 2013) We are naturally inclined to believe that we can communicate more effectively with those who are like us. The argument that the fear of criticism, is the culprit of
