Secondly, some of the time I spent in Boy Scouts, while working to earn my Eagle Scout rank, served to simultaneously strengthen both my faith and my sense of morality. Although, Boy Scouts is mindful not to advance any religious beliefs onto anyone, the organization does provide, for those who wish to practice their faith, opportunities to do so within scouting. For example, Boy Scouts offers a Duty to God program where upon completion I earned a patch recognizing that I had worked to further strengthen my faith. In addition, while quite a bit of influence from Christianity can be observed in some elements of Boy Scouts, such as in the Scout Oath with doing one’s duty to God and the Scout Law with a scout always being reverent, Boy Scouts
I believe that I already possess many of the “soft skills.” I have acquired many of these skills through my experiences in 4-H and Boy Scouts. I believe that I possess the verbal communication skills, decision making/problem solving skills, the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work, the ability to obtain and process information, the ability to analyze quantitative data, proficiency with computer software programs, and the ability to create and/or edit written reports.
In Patricia Herzog’s article Youth Group Cliques: How Religious Goals Can Disguise Discriminatory Group Dynamics, she states that that “Christianity places an emphasis on unity in Christ” (Herzog 218). She uses 1 Corinthians 1:10 “I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought” and 1 Corinthians 12: 24b-25 “But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other” to support this idea of unity and inclusion with all people connected to the body of Christ. Although unity may be the goal for most youth groups as well, Herzog believes that “group dynamics are often shaped by more than their theological underpinnings and demonstrate social influences as well” (Herzog 218). This creates an in group and the out group, and generally the out group are students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds that do not get the same respect as the students from the in group and are not as easily accepted.
The age of exploration and European colonization should be considered a tragedy. Obviously, there are positives and negatives to any situation. However, during this time period there were more tragic circumstances. It was a tragedy because so many innocent people died, in Jamestown, the columbian exchange, and from being slaves.
As a student of Saint Lawrence, any kid can be a steward to other people. They can serve others and assist them with their journey to become a more adept Catholic steward. I’m currently a boy scout right now in Troop 101. A boy scout can exemplify as being a steward. They aid other people and serve the nation on what they decided to establish. As a boy scout, there's one community service I associated with with my fellow troop members this year. The service was at Mount Saint Joseph Carmelite Monastery up in the hills. Nuns and priests needed people to assist them with clearing twigs and garbage in one of their fields, so the janitor doesn’t have to do too much work in there and just pick up the trash instead. Troop 101 was in charge of picking
If an organization had over three million members, you would expect for them to be accepting of all who wanted to join. Not in the case of Boy Scouts of America who revoked the membership of a homosexual scout member James Dale. Dale was a boy scout for ten years and earned one of the highest badges a Boy Scout could receive, an Eagle Scout Badge. In 1989, Dale applied to become an Adult Leader and got accepted as an Assistant Scoutmaster, but was discharged sixteen months later, because he was a homosexual. This happened shortly after he had spoken out on gay and lesbian teen health and psychological issues.
The short story, “Hills like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway is about a young couple travelling in Spain, who are arguing over a life changing and burdening situation they have found themselves in. The unnamed man is identified as the American, while the women has the nickname of Jig. It is never actually discussed what exactly they are arguing over, but it is implied that they are discussing the possibility of an abortion. Hemingway uses setting and symbolism to convey the discussion of abortion and leads the readers to conclude for themselves.
A study done by researchers from Tufts University reveals that “Scouting is scientifically proven to promote positive character development”(Cordaro). The helpful, forward thinking ideology of Boy Scouts has helped boys grow into optimistic and motivated young adults. Dr. Richard M. Lerner, the leader of the study at Tufts University, reports, “After three years, Scouts reported significant increases in cheerfulness, helpfulness, kindness, obedience, trustworthiness, and hopeful future expectations” (Tufts University). All of these traits, coincidentally, are the same traits that Baden-Powell promoted in the Scout Law: trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. Scouting;s focus on a prosocial experience gives young people the chance to build a positive character that allow them the chance to embrace opportunity, overcome obstacles, and Be Prepared for life.
Scouting will continue to teach respect and dignity to all people regardless of their ethnic background their skin color or their religious believes. The challenge in America is many scouting organizations belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints which may or may not except other religions. However there are many scouting organizations that are not sponsored by the church those organizations will welcome boys from all backgrounds.
This Court recognizes the Boy Scouts as a public accommodation under New Jersey’s public accommodations law. The state’s definition of “public accommodation” is said to “include, but not be limited to,” more than 50 types of places such as summer camps and “any educational institution under the supervision of the State Board of Education, or the Commissioner of Education of the State of New Jersey.” As the Boy Scouts both own a multitude of summer camps and often use public locations (such as schools and churches) as meeting places, the statute applies. The Boy Scouts did not adhere to this law in revoking Dale’s membership and position as a Troop leader because the New Jersey statute prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation
In the evolving age of science and technology the solid and proveable world is beginning to put our faith in higher beings and powers. For example, biopsychologist Dr. Nigel Barber predicts religion could die out by 2041 due to being replaced with materialistic items. A country’s GDP, local prices and human development index have caused Dr. Barber to come to the conclusion that the average country will be secular in 2041. In Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clarke, preachings and prophecies are dissolving as a god complex for a superior race and their devices grows. In the future, it is possible that religion will be replaced with machines and artificial intelligence
In 2007 me and my brother argued with our mom we didn't want too go to boy scouts. I was in 2nd grade my brother hunter was in 4th grade. Mom wanted us to do something productive instead of just watching TV all the time. We sort’ve agreed to going yet i felt anxious about it. Couple days later hunter and i packed our equipment and stuff. We hopped in the car as my mom was excited for us to go. One early afternoon we arrived there I felt a bit of nervousness and uncertainty. We grouped around the teacher including the other scouts. He introduced himself and explained the activities and stuff we were going do. Soon after, We tied knots, played soccer and explored around the place. Later on, Hunter and i set up the tent for the night at a
One of the most discussed topics in the modern world is children indoctrination into religion. Children aren't developed enough to decide in what to believe or disbelieve. Everyone is born without believing in a religion until it is either forced on them or they are developed enough to decide if one of the religions ''works'' for them or not. Mostly, parents are the most influential part in a child life. They decide what a proper education is to their successor and they impose their ideas to their child.
Throughout the history of the United States, the issue of religion has often been at the forefront of American politics and the American legal system. The topic of religion in public schools arises quite often due to the religious diversity that exist in the United States and sometimes it is due to citizens not understanding the law. The issue of what to do during an assignment that asks students to write about their hero and draw a picture that represents them and a student discusses and displays a religious figure, is protected under free speech and I will prove this.
I believe that having a spiritual life is beneficial to growth and development over the lifespan. In fact, there are a lot of people that believe in a higher power and that this higher power has influence in their lives. Belief in a higher power/God provides comfort and support in times of need. Melinda Wenner, 2008 who wrote “Religion is good for kids,” states that kids who have religious parents are better behaved and control themselves much better than other kids. Wenner also sites a study that looks at how religion affects a child’s development. The study, she speaks of, was done by John Bartkowski, a sociologist and his fellow coworkers. The researchers used evidence obtained by over 16,000 first grade students and their parents. The research found that children who went to church and had parents that spoke with them about religion had better self-control and better social skills than those kids who did not have a spiritual parent (s), (Wenner, 2008). In addition, Bartkowski thinks that religion is good for children because it creates networks and support and can also help parents reinforce spirituality to their children. He also said that the values that children get from religious worshipers are pro-family and can help shape how children develop. I agree with the sociologist W. Bradford Wilcox who Melinda Wenner, 2008 quoted as saying that parents are more interested in their children going to heaven than going to college.
The Middle Ages was a time of Knighthood and Chivalry Code, upholding values and conforming to society. The religious culture was a major aspect of this time period, it was uncommon for religion to be manipulated to accommodate flaws people had. “A woman was always subservient to a man, whether husband, father, or brother”, (Introduction: The Middle Ages), a woman during this time period had no political rights, or say. They were to be seen but not heard, their social standing was determined by the man in her life and the level of respect he had in the community. The use of satire throughout this prologue illustrates the irony and humor towards religion.
