Parents play a major role in the developmental growth of children as they are their primary caregivers. The parent-child relationship is most poignant as children view their parents as being the most significant role models in their lives. Parental school engagement can be defined as parents’ participation in their children’s school-related activities such as attending teacher conferences, serving on the committee, volunteering, or observing and participating in their children’s educational success (Hill & Taylor, as cited in Powell et al., 2010). For example, research demonstrates that preschoolers with advanced reading and writing skills and kindergarten children with broad social abilities are associated with higher academic success in the later years (Miles & Stipek, as cited in Powell et al., 2010). As parents participate in school activities they are able to gain insight on their children’s learning, which leads to improvements in how parents can further support their children’s academic aptitude (Hill & Tyson, 2009). Furthermore, as children observe their parents actively involved in school-related activities, they are more likely to obtain messages regarding the importance of school as well as form a stronger association between home and school (Kaufman et al., 2010). In addition, committed parental involvement such as assisting with classroom activities and ongoing parent-school communication is associated with children’s increased ability to meet curriculum objectives and positive behavioral outcomes (Marcon, as cited in Powell et al., 2010). Lastly, a parent’s perception of teacher responsiveness is positively correlated with the child’s outcome as it allows for a consistent flow of information between the parent and the teacher, which affects the academic outcome of the child (Kaufman et al., 2010).
