It can be difficult to come up with a method of evaluating decisions and forming unbiased opinions. To understand how ethics are influenced it is important to understand (1) how ethics are formed, (2) which forces are shaping them, and (3) what is a popular method of transmission. Chapters eight and nine of Critical Thinking: Tools for Taking Charge of your Professional and Personal Life by Paul and Elder, covers the (1) history of ideas, (2) media, and (3) experience. These topics are applied to their influence on ethics and decision making.

The patterns of the church burnings did not warrant the conclusion of the return of white racism [see "Burned Out and Washed Up," Sept. 2, 1996]. The churches were victims of vandalism and accidents. http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1571/is_22_18/ai_87917201/pg_2
The (1) media, (2) activists, and (3) politicians did not bother to correct the previous stories and statements. The media had managed to leave the public with a poor perception of ethics in the South and no follow up to correct things.
History of Ideas
Paul and Elder (Paul and Elder xxxx) wrote of alternative views as a way to form independent opinions. The mass media conditions the majority of the public with broad circulation and the only way to counteract is to read from earlier time periods. Relevant writings can be referenced from ten to all the way back to two-thousand years ago. Plato and Aristotle are viable sources from over two-thousand years ago. More contemporary sources are Albert Einstein and Winston Churchill. Groups and authors write with an agenda whether intended or not. While earlier writings removed from the present have a different agenda they may still be relevant. Reading in the present spreads the same inaccuracies that are poured on the rest of the population. Patterns of misconception and stereotypes form that follow the past into the present. Most people have misconceptions already that are not apparent. Reading about the misconceptions of
For most people, the topic of ethics is boring and uninteresting. People only begin to pay attention when gross examples of misconduct are broadcast in the news. The ethical dilemmas that many face are not dilemmas that children could solve. They are complex issues that require serious thought about consequence and resolution. McLemore explains that his book is a guide for ethics in a world where people believe they are ethical experts. The correct decision for an ethical dilemma is not always clear. McLemore hopes that with this book one can address ethical dilemmas with sophistication.
What exactly does the term “ethics” mean? When asking this question among several different groups of people, I’m sure all of their answers would be different in many ways, but would all draw the general theme that ethics is somewhat of a study of what is right and what is wrong. This is a mostly correct conclusion, except for the fact that it encompasses not only determining what is right and wrong, but attempting to systemize and defend those ethical positions which one holds. Almost all of the controversial headlines you see in the media today involve some sort of question of ethics. Abortion. Healthcare. (“Should we take money from the rich and give to the poor to pay for medical expenses?”) Gun laws. Euthanasia, etc. The topic I want
The Columbus Index, a newspaper, published a list of Negro community leaders and described them as “marked men.” Also, The Westville News, another newspaper, openly said that they have to downtrod the minority to the bottom so that a “white man’s part” can rule a “white man’s country.” This is ironic as they fail to acknowledge that they never actually belonged to the country, but forcefully tried to attain the ownership by torturing the natives of the land. Also, they declined to be more accepting towards other minorities or communities who wish to settle like the whites just as they did a couple of centuries ago. This is an epitome of their overflowing
Every day we are faced with certain situations that challenge us with how to act in an ethical manner. It can be human nature to feel unsure or conflicted with the correct moral choice. Some can say that one should know how to handle such dilemmas and others may say that there should be a reference of some sort to help guide through such conflicts. Sometimes we know the answers and sometimes we are unsure of how to handle certain situations. Most times we go through life wondering what we should do. As I become further educated on the different theories of ethics, I believe there are answers that are available in guiding one through an ethical dilemma and or judgment. I will discuss Vincent Ruggiero’s three basic criteria, Robert Kegan’s order of consciousness, the three schools of ethics and the correlation between all three.
Using concepts of ethics and ethical behaviors is essential for critical thinking. Without adequate critical thinking
The life of prisoners some may never know. There are those who care not to know what goes on behind that wired fence. We find that some people that are convicted of crimes that they did not commit. Some people would rather turn their heads to what actually happens in a prison institution, because they feel it is no concern of theirs. Innocent women and men face a disaster in life when they find their selves incarcerated in such facility as these. The treatment in prison facilities toward prisoners with health issues or those who develop health concerns that
Theoretical Perspectives Decision Making Framework is suitable to making ethical decisions. According to Bonde & Firenze (2013) the decision about right or wrong can be difficult and might be related to individual context. Ethical thinking other than critical thinking is needed in order to find the most suitable alternatives to be implemented in reaching the expected
Chapter four introduces the interdependent sequence of ethics. Ethics deals with the relation between people, and the relation between the person and society in order to integrate social organization to people. We then begin to question what is incorporated into society. Individuals are a members of an interdependent community described as land ethic.
Currently, I have a short process that I regularly follow when making tough decisions. This process entails thinking about the people involved in the specific situation and how each of them will be affected by the decision I make. Next, I consider the possible actions I could take, and predict the outcome of those actions. Upon completion of this thought process, I typically know what has to be done. Prior to this course I would’ve said that my decision making process was good enough the way it was. Now, Dr. MacCammon’s discussion on ethics made me realize how important this process is, and it inspired me to strengthen my approach.
Students are invited to think about and decide if there were no rules for conduct of ethical research and no software to detect plagiarism, would it matter? With this in mind, a discussion is required to explain why it would matter or why it would not matter.
Ethics are moral philosophies that manage ones behavior; ethics have to do with ones feelings, emotions, religious beliefs, and overall what is fundamentally right or wrong. Critical thinking is an analysis or style of judgement that helps an individual make a decision or solve a problem. Critical thinking plays a significant role in the ethical process as it is the method in which we decide for ourselves whether or not something is right, wrong or morally ethical. Critical thinking allows one to differentiate between fiction and reality or be able to figure out an unknown. By being a critical thinker, a person is able to mature mentally which in turn will help them figure out their own ethical
When you have a problem or decision that has to be made, what processes or steps do you take to solve that problem and in making your decision. Do you make your decision on ethics or are you a critical thinker; do you use both to help with your problem solving and decision making? In this essay, you will learn the relationship between critical thinking and ethics and how the two affect your process of thinking.
“Great individuals have great ethics and great values.” Ethics and morality can be used interchangeably as they sound as if they mean the same although there is a wide distinction between them. “Strictly speaking, morality is used to refer to what we would call moral standards and moral conduct while ethics is used to refer to the formal study of those standards and conduct. For this reason, the study of ethics is also often called moral philosophy." (Gordana D 2007)
“Brad is a production engineer at a bicycle company and part of his job includes inspecting broken bikes and drafting the design repairs for their repair” (Bartlett). Brad is considering replacing a broken brake cable with a more durable material, even though the customer did not request it in their order and specifically requested that “No aesthetic changes be made to the bike” (Bartlett). Brad’s manager suggests that his considered actions would go against the company’s policy of “The customer is always right.” Should Brad disobey the manager and the customer to possibly lose his job or go along with
