ICT Part 3
Technology plays a major role in the world in which we live, Information Communication Technology (ICT) is an integral part of almost everyone’s life; be it at work, in education or socially. It is felt paramount that children are exposed to technology and are given the opportunity to develop the skills required.
Teaching staff should integrate technology effectively into their teaching to create an inclusive, innovative and exciting learning environment. www.becta.org.uk
In this essay I intend to write an analytical account of the teaching and learning context of the learning resource I have developed, with the intention that it will assist in future developments I may undertake. I will also discuss how the use of

In 1997 the National grid for Learning (NGfL) ‘earmarked’ £750 million for ICT initiatives. Since then ICT in schools has vastly improved. It is important that children learn about ICT, both how to use it and its potential usefulness.
ICT is part of the National Curriculum (Department for Education and Employment 2000) for which all teachers in England have to follow. ICT is a standalone subject, but is part of the curriculum for all subjects, except Physical Education. A curriculum based around ICT has the advantage of flexible study, this is particularly important for learners with Special Educational Needs (SEN). ICT is not just about learning academically, it is about a child’s social, personal and emotional development. A child’s confidence and self-esteem can be increased when using ICT; and if the child enjoys using ICT motivation will also be enhanced.
ICT teaching tools provide opportunities to add value to the teaching and learning of subjects.
(DCSF (2008) Beyond Engagement Pg 4)
In ICT teaching and learning effectively can be achieved by using a variety of methods. These methods can include; whole class teaching, individual study or group work. Lessons should be dynamic, and provide a range of differentiated teaching and learning activities. Effective ICT
ICT resources are both an engaging and creative tool that can assist and expand on students learning. Technology pedagogical content and knowledge, or TPCK, is a concept that has developed in recent years due to the introduction of technology as a teaching tool in the classroom (Niess, M, 2005). Considering students also use technology in their daily lives, it can be a great way to help engage them and make the lesson interesting as well as informative. Creating an iMovie is just one of many ways a teacher can incorporate technology into a lesson. With many schools providing students with iPads in recent years, using technology as a teaching tool has become increasingly easier and more widely accepted. However, it has to be noted that TPCK requires teachers to be well educated in different areas of technology, aiming to build upon what they already know (Niess, M, 2005). Using technology in a day-to-day setting is completely different from using it as an educational tool, and teachers must be aware of the challenges they face integrating it into their
Having the ICT technology in schools it encourages the pupils to access a wide range of information and communication opportunities and enables pupils to store and retrieve, draft and redraft, test and analyse. This develops there learning skills that are required for the National Curriculum. These skills include: Communication skills, problem-solving, investigating, evaluating and analysing and critical
The use of technology in the classroom is an important tool to utilize as an educator. Technology allows for educators to have instant access to a plethora of resources that would not be available if technology was not used in the classroom. Teachers have the ability to plan lessons, create presentations, and have interactive games for students to use as a learning tool through the use of different digital devices. Modern day technology is rapidly advancing and providing teacher with many different tools to use in the classroom to enhance the students learning experience.
Information communication technology (ICT) helps to learn theoretic development discoveries, treatment and support techniques for education and curriculum. It gives teachers, higher level teaching assistant (HLTA) and children access to educational resources from around the globe anytime and day. While using ICT, children learn concepts, history, ideas, theories and practices across culture when it is use in their classroom. HLTA and teachers however have to know how and why they are using ICT and incorporate the concepts in: social responsibility, creativity, communication, culture sensitivity, decision making technology application and usage. According to Andrews et al. (2006, p.5) “ICT has been defined as including stand-alone computers, networked technologies with a multimodal interface, mobile phones with the capacity for a range of types of communication, and other technologies that allow multimodal and interactive communication.”
Technology of the past 20 years has become a focal point of teaching and learning. As a teacher, it is my job to facilitate the learning for an individual by creating an environment that not only conducive for learning, but also places the child in a position to discover and learn them for themselves. Technology has given teachers to opportunity to take learning beyond the classroom, and has begun to reshape their role in the learning process.
Surely children today need a relationship with technology in order to thrive. The way that we can foster these bonds is by introducing technology to students in a classroom at a young age. If students are taught to respect technology and use it properly from the beginning of their relationship with it, these habits will continue into their teenage years and beyond into their adult lives. One-to-one computing from kindergarten on will allow students access to technology on demand, in the classroom and at home. By doing this, we allow students access to their learner profiles 24/7, giving them the option to learn anytime they please. Teachers can also tailor
Digital technology offers pupils the opportunity to learn according to their preferred learning style and at their own pace that fitting to their distinct needs, facilitating an inclusive education (Education Scotland, 2015b). Salend (2005) states that creating an inclusive classroom accompanies numerous benefits; improved academic attainment, behaviour and engagement in
Technology can be found in every classroom of schools today and continues to grow as the field of technology continues to advance. School age children today know more about technology than most middle-aged adults because they have been exposed to it from such an early age. We live in the technology age and it’s clear that technology is here to stay and has permeated every area of our lives including home, work and leisure. Because of this, educators and school staff have been tech-savvy and must continue to keep up with the technological advances in order to present as competent to the student body. Technology has impacted the way our students learn and has provided avenues of learning to disabled students that they didn’t have in the past and has provided teaching staff with a multitude of resources and diversity in class activities to aid in teaching (Pearson, 2010). Without a doubt, technology will continue to impact our educational system as new technologies emerge and our country competes to keep up with a new globalized economy. Schools will implement these technologies into the
In Lavin, Korte, Davies). The result of the study further pushes the notion of how important it is for school staff to understand the given technology so they can distribute the information effectively to their students. All the technology in the world will be ineffective if the teachers themselves are not passionate of their work. “Technology has the potential to transform the learning environment from passive to active and more subject to the control of the learner.” (qtd. In Lavin, Korte, Davies).
With new technology and advances in education it is no wonder the use of computers, iPads, and other devices are trickling into the daily life of our younger generations. Perhaps these advances could be doing more harm than providing the enriching education parents and schools think they are. There are now elementary schools where every child has their own iPad and middle schools with Chrome Books the students can take home. Even paper textbooks are being replaced with electronic versions. The use of technology moving forward with education needs to be balanced with critical factors involving a child’s development. Children must be separated from constant attachment to screens to properly learn and develop necessary social skills to become adults who are able to interact and communicate.
I chose for standard # 4 Technology and Children from EDU 271. Because technology has the greatest impact in a student's learning pattern, it is important to understand in what ways we can use technology for our students. Throughout this assignment I learned that technology is a way to open students’ eyes to the world, but their effectiveness depends on them being used appropriately, with the right curriculum goals in mind, and by teachers who possess the skills necessary in their use. I consider that computers are appropriate in the development of student ages three and above because they are developmentally within Piaget’s preoperational stage. While this is true, the developmental needs of
Children’s minds are sponges that absorb everything they are introduced to, so the bottom line is that since we all accept the fact that it’s too late to withdraw the use of technology from children’s lives, we should take responsibility in employing technology in their education, and in promoting their intellectual, and psychological
It is crucial that students are not just being educated in only one way. Each child is different; as a result, learning styles should be versatile and open to new strategies. By learning to use technology correctly, teachers are preparing themselves, and the students for the future by developing certain skills that will be essential in the 21st century. Besides developing the students’ technology skills, students will
The impact on technology in the classroom has opened many new windows for educators. Technology can be used in various ways while working in a classroom, whether that be a first grade classroom or a class of juniors in high school. Technology can help our students widen their knowledge. When planning lessons, it is important that teachers incorporate some types of technology. When technology is used in your lessons, the students will be able to achieve their learning goals. While using technology in the classrooms, teachers and students are able to connect with others around the world, making technology a useful tool in building your classroom into a global learning community. The use of technology has been able to enhance and individualize learning as well. While using technology it is important to remember to connect the content being and the specific learning goals, otherwise the use of technology won’t be as helpful during the lesson. The use of technology will supplement instruction, allowing students to achieve content learning goals. When implementing technology into your classroom, it is important that you incorporate these aspects into your planning and teaching.
Education is one of the most important professions in the working world. Technology has done many things for us in today’s society especially for education and schools. Technology in the school system has impacted the students and teachers in many positive ways, including virtual field trips, testing tips, teacher resources, class web sites, and lesson plans. With computer use in our schools, we have access to many different sources and various types of learning.
