In today’s modernized society, health care organizations rely heavily on information systems. Information technology has improved tremendously over the years, becoming a major advantage to the health care industry. With proper planning, development, and management, information technology can bring about countless efficiency in structural maneuvers. With the constant changes in technology, a health care organization must stay up-to-date on technology and the lasted trends that offer the best patient care possible. When implementing an information system, an organization must take steps to ensure the company is making the right decision. The most important step or decision when acquiring a new information system is making sure the system will accomplish and meet the organization goals. Stakeholders play a major role in the process of acquiring a beneficial information system and making sure it is the best choice for the organization (Ruffin, 1995).
Deciding which information system is the best for the organization can be difficult, but by taking the time to thoroughly research the system, the organization can be certain the new program will help the organization succeed. Stakeholders can be defined as people who have a vested interest in, concern about, affected by or are involved in some way with the issues of an organization (NSW Government, 2011). Stakeholders can fall under two different categories: The primary (internal) stakeholders are a group of people who have direct stake in the organization, such as Doctors, Nurses, and CIO’s. Their roles are vital in the acquisition of the information system, as they are the main financial and information source for the new information system. The secondary (external) stakeholders are groups of people not directly affected by the outcome of the project but still have an interest in it. Patients also fall within the category of a
