The floor exercise is performed on a thirty nine by thirty nine foot spring floor. Gymnasts perform to music, but incur deductions if the music has lyrics. The vault is a four by three foot table, that is four feet high. The vaulting table is a flat, cushioned surface that slopes down at the end closest to the springboard. The runway is the padded,115 by three foot area before the vaulting table. A balance beam is a sixteen foot long by four inch wide beam covered with leather or suede and is raised four feet off the floor. The beam can range from eight to sixteen feet long but the standard olympic length is sixteen feet. There are also low beams and floor beams, which are only used to practice and learn new skills. The uneven bars have a steel frame with wood coated fibreglass bars. Upper bars or high bars are 8.2 feet high and the lower bars are 5.6 feet high. The distance between the two bars depends on the height of the gymnast. A single high bar is used for practice because it is easier for the coach spot or help the gymnast. The current format for an artistic gymnastics team is four-three-three, which means there are four gymnasts on the team, only three compete in each event and only those three scores count. In the team finals, gymnasts compete with their team and perform in all four events. Being part of a team is very important to the mental side of gymnastics. During competitions, a gymnast will always have her team with her to cheer her on. Having positive reinforcements from team members will improve the gymnasts overall performance. If a gymnast is becoming discouraged while trying to get a new skill, words of encouragement for teammates can make it easier for the gymnast to achieve the skills. Another relationship in a gymnastics atmosphere is rivals. A gymnast will almost always have a rival during , whether this it be a single person or an entire club. Gymnasts also usually have a great relationship with their coach, especially if they have been coached by the same person for years. The summer Olympic sports have varied from year to year, yet continue to be variations of the same sports that have appealed to older generations without any consideration for that of the younger generation. Now, the International Olympic Committee is looking for sports to add, so that a wider audience is catered to during the Olympic season. One of these sports is competitive cheerleading. Competitive cheerleading is considered an athletic competition where girls and boys perform routines in order to receive a score from the judges. Competitive Cheerleading should be added to the Olympics because it not only fits within a working definition of what a sport

Strength, balance, and determination are only a few things that every gymnast needs to do difficult skills while staying on a tiny four inch beam. Back walkovers on the beam is a very hard skill to do and scary to get over the fear of doing them in gymnastics. Before anyone attempts a back walkover, they should make sure they can do a backbend, handstand on the beam, and a kickover. Supplies will be needed to teach people how to do a backwalkover on the beam while having form as pretty as a flower blowing in the wind. Mats, a high beam, and a low beam are the main items needed. However, a line strip and a soft, squishy, low beam will help you learn backwalkover easier. With all of that equipment, anyone can learn a back walkover quickly.

Imagine walking on a four-inch piece of wood that is four feet off the ground, or flying through the air performing skills people only dream of doing. Gymnastics is a sport that taught me many things including, how to preserve through difficult situations and how to overcome my fears. I did gymnastics for ten years before I decided that the sport was too stressful and time consuming.
Dance teams are all about unity. The definition of a dance team is for multiple people to dance in one unit and to dance in sync. To be unified means to have a greater bond. To solve this, we started to have team discussions, where we all sit in a big circle and talk about our differences. After the first time we did this, I already felt more apart of the team. After this, I didn't feel the need to be as perfect as the girl next to me. All I needed to do was do my best and smile through it all and I would feel just as wonderful. From all of our team finally being comfortable dancing together and not thinking about the fact that we are all on different levels of dance, we won 21 trophies at our first contest for the season and made our directors
“Gymnastics taught me everything- life lessons, responsibility and discipline and respect,” says Shawn Johnson, 2008 Beijing Olympics All Around Gold Medalist. However, research shows gymnastics is a perfectly healthy sport which teaches life skills such as time management, sportsmanship, and healthy habits.
Starting blocks really help because runners have a push off of something. Before the running blocks, athletes would just have to stand straight up and start without having an extra push. Starting blocks have not only helped me but many others as well. By using starting blocks, it has helped athletes decreases their time and become a lot faster(“ISPORT”). In the 1950’s, a fiberglass pole was just starting to be used for an event called the pole vault. Pole vault is similar to the high jump. Pole vault is when an athlete takes a pole and runs with it, sticks the pole in the ground, and there is a bar way up in the air and you use the pole to try and thrust your way over the bar. The pole vault is a very complicated event and takes a lot of practice(“ISPORT”).

This directly translates into their studies and their lives. In these team sports, success or failure in competition depends on many variables. When these variables align through effective teamwork a successful play emerges as the teammates work together through coordination, communication and cohesion in training to achieve this result. Everyone has a role in the team and is expected to execute their task effectively. Any sort of individualism proves detrimental to the team as we all know, there is no “I” in
