Today Jeff Varner from the St. Cloud Medical Group talked with our class. He began by telling us about the education piece in order to become a chiropractor. First, you must obtain a 4 year undergrad degree. You can major in anything he said, but he suggests that we have either a major or minor that involves a science (chemistry, biology, or physics). Then you must go on for another 4 years of chiropractic school where you will become a doctor of chiropractic. He said when he first began working he made $22,000 however, as he worked more and more his salary bumped up to $60,000 that next year. And the following year he was making over $100,000. With time comes a raise and the more experience you have at that profession the more you will make. The next …show more content…
On a typical day, Jeff says he sees about 30 patients and they change around every 15 minutes. Everything in life is about balance. If you have a passion for something you must learn how to balance everything you’re doing and be sure you are doing it well. We were given a small history lesson about Western and Eastern medicine. In the chiropractic world, Western medicine (what we use in the U.S.) believes when something is in pain the reason for the pain is the general area of where the pain originates. Conversely, in Eastern medicine (used everywhere else in the world) believes that pain is caused in harmony with the body. For example, in Eastern medicine, if someone is having pain in their knee, a chiropractor approaches the treatment as if the pain were originating from the neck on down to the knee and even below the knee to the person’s feet. The second large topic of Jeff Varner’s speech was acupunture. Acupuncture is a system of medicine that involves pricking the skin or tissues with needles, used to alleviate pain and to treat various physical, mental, and emotional conditions. Currently, an acupuncture is used to treat depression and stress. There are over 400 acupuncture sites located throughout the
Dr. Tieraona Low Dog, Fellowship Director, Arizona Center For Integrative Medicine explains how we want to expose clinicians to a broader way of seeing the patient a deeper understanding of healing and a larger toolbox from which to choose for therapies. She talks about how if patients were treated with different procedures such as acupuncture or holistic healing, we as consumers would not have to pay out so much on treatment. Procedures such as these would actually benefit us because we would not need to see doctors nearly as much as we do now, because we would not be “treating” the diseases with chemicals (pharmaceutical drugs) which have many side effects. Also, the pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies would never let this happen because then they would be out of money because people would not have to see their doctors nearly as much in hence means that these “cattle runners” would not be making the money they are.
The mission of chiropractors is to enhance the lives of this and future generations through the power of the chiropractic adjustment and wellness lifestyle. Many athletes go to the chiropractor to get their health to full potential again. Although, most clients go to the doctor and get hundreds of dollars worth of x-rays and medicine, if they went to the chiropractor then their injury could easily be fixed with quicker treatments and less money spent. Going to the chiropractor is a better option to heal client’s spinal issues than going to the doctor.
Many people will experience many physical factors such as pain and mobility problems, some individuals may feel that it’s best to take orthodox medicines which are the best pain relief or option for them, this includes treatments such as paracetamol and ibuprofen. However, some people might have side effects from medicines, therefore they choose to have alternatives, such as, massage and acupuncture. This means that pain can be taken away without any side
Acupuncture has been identified as a “method of preventing, diagnosing, and treating disease by inserting metal needles into the body at designated locations¬—acupuncture points— at various depths and angles” (Armstrong, 1972). This specific type of medical treatment was officially introduced to the United States in the 1800’s by Chinese immigrants, but was not properly recognized as a healing method until 1972. During that year President Nixon had traveled to China, where a local New York Times journalist had been treated with acupuncture to help him cope with the pain he had, after experiencing an emergency appendectomy (Updated Acupuncture Lecture, Slide 7). Even though it took years for acupuncture to become acknowledged in the Unites States,

Additionally, being a chiropractor is another career that sparks my interest. "Chiropractors care for patients with health problems of the neuromusculoskeletal system, which includes nerves, bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons" (U.S Dept. of Labor, "Chiropractors"). Chiropractors examine patient's physical state, run tests, and perform "neuromusculoskeletal therapy" (U.S Dept. of Labor, "Chiropractors"). These responsibilities are very important considering the fact that they are working on patients' nerves and other important body parts. This career involves you to be more hands-on with the patient's injury and so while in the process of treating the chiropractor should make a habit of checking with the patient concerning their comfort

Chiropractors are health-care professionals that contribute a lot to people seeking a health lifestyle. Chiropractors go through safe procedures that can help increase mobility, relieve pain, and optimize performance. A majority of chiropractors treat families however they treat them one-on-one allowing them to form a bond with each person and understanding what that person likes and dislikes. The history of chiropractic first startedoff when Daniel David Palmer made his first chiropractic adjustment on a janitor who couldn’t hear very well. A few days after that adjustment, the janitor cameback and told Palmer that his hearing seemed to improve. The correction to the janitor encouraged Palmer to open a school of chiropractic two years later. “Chiropractic” actually is derived

Throughout my high school career, I had a great variety of classes ranging from Civil Engineering and Architecture to Anatomy and Physiology. I was, and still am, interested in just about everything. At the University of North Dakota, I chose to pursue an Interdisciplinary Studies Degree with an emphasis in Health Science and a Minor in Biology. This allowed me to tailor my schedule to include courses I needed as well as courses I was interested in. As evident in my transcripts, I took a little bit of everything and I loved every moment of it. Although I wasn’t yet focusing on a certain career path, I was certain that I wanted to ultimately pursue a career in the medical field. Specifically, I have recently found that chiropractic will allow me to enrich the lives of others while exhibiting lifelong learning
One of the most common alternative medical practices is that of chiropractic medicine. The field has definitely come a long way from its humble beginnings and has begun to a major alternative care strategy to be used for a great multitude of complaints and conditions dealing with the back and skeletal structure. Treatment works through manipulating the spine to readjust vertebra placement and is common for back and neck pains and injuries.
Many people visit a chiropractor when they have pain in their back or neck, or have been referred by their doctor for help after a sports injury or automobile accident. However, there are many more reasons to see a chiropractor for good, overall health.
‘Chiropractic (Greek kheir, hand, and praktikos, practitioner) is defined as the science of treating human ailments by adjustment of the spine’ Bradbury, P. (1957). It is grounded in the principle that the
Tibetan medicine practices the belief that methods must be practiced as equally as they are learned academically. Misinterpretations of certain Buddhist aspects of Eastern medicine create difficulties in relating Eastern and Western principles. Some Westerners feel that all you need to practice medicine in the East is a strong sense of compassion to help people, without having any real knowledge of the medical practices: “A few weekend courses and all the good intentions in the world it would seem is all that is thought to be necessary.” (Dummer p. 11). This, however, is not the case at all. Eastern practitioners spend years learning medical procedures and techniques before going into practice. They are also fully educated in the spiritual aspects of medicine as well, as for religion plays a significant role in Eastern practices. Inadequate training may result in improper care and detrimental diagnosis to those who may be seriously ill or suffering from undiagnosed diseases.7
Acupuncture is the science of healing with needles through energy channels; it has a rich history and is now used around the world. The real question is, is acupuncture effective? How can we simply prove that sticking needles into a person’s body is actually taking away their pain or disease? How do we go from believing completely in Western Medicine to believing in Eastern Medicine? Although acupuncture is an Eastern form of healing, it has gained much credibility and respect in the West.
