How many calories do you eat a day? The average adolescent should eat between 1,800 and 2,400 calories a day (Cotter). Maintaining a body weight that suits your height and size is extremely essential. However, some adolescents have an over-the-top concern about their body and appearance. This extraordinary concern can easily lead to an eating disorder. An eating disorder is when a range of psychological disorders is characterized by any type of abnormal eating habits (Favor). Do all people concerned about their weight end up with an eating disorder at some point in their life? Absolutely not! Taking care of your body and watching your weight is very important and should always be a light concern of yours. When someone is diagnosed with an eating disorder, it is very important to seek help so you can better yourself and your actions. The two primary types of eating disorders that I will further discuss are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. Anorexia Nervosa, usually referred to as just Anorexia, is a condition in which a person reduces their eating. It is the third most common chronic disease, right after Asthma and Type I Diabetes (Favaro). It comes with many health consequences as well, some being severe tooth decay, heart problems, erosion of the esophagus lining, fatigue, and chemical imbalances(Cotter). Both have victims that are usually female, obsessed with their appearance, diet a huge amount, and think they’re fat at all times(Ciccarelli). Bulimia is, however, easier to recover from. Only one in every ten Bulimic receives treatment, and if they do, they receive cognitive therapy. Bulimia only affects around 1%-2% people in the world and it is extremely common in athletes or anyone involved in sports or athletics
