Most people are amazed by the beauty and uniqueness of it. Mount Rushmore has four of our founding fathers carved onto the side of the mountain they include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and last but not least is Theodore Roosevelt. This monument can teach you a lot about how its was made because there is a very educational museum at the park. There is a lot of history and facts about Mount Rushmore that interests many tourists. The purpose of many monuments is to honor and protect the legacy of some of America's greatest heroes. Kirk Savage in the book Monument
This is referring to the fact that by building Mount Rushmore, much of the land had to be modified or outwardly destroyed. A similar example of the destruction of land can be found in Source B, where the viewer can clearly see how the Columbus monument clearly disrupts the view of the trees in the background. Whether or not these are planted trees, the sheer image of the monument disrupts the uniformity and calm of the
PBS describes the story this way: "The story of Mount Rushmore's creation is as bizarre and wonderful as the monument itself. It is the tale of a hyperactive, temperamental artist whose talent and determination propelled the project, even as his ego and obsession threatened to tear it apart. It is the story of hucksterism and hyperbole, of a massive public works project in the midst of an economic depression."
George Armstrong Custer is important & remembered to American history because he was a United States Army officer and cavalry commander in the America civil war. He also fought many wars.
We infer that George Washington was built first and that he took the most time to build. He was the first president of the United States, so it would only make sense that he would be built first in Mount Rushmore. We also think this inference because he is more detailed than the others. For example, he has a collar of his shirt. And also, it seems as though he was built down to his torso, while the others seemed as though only the heads were built. When we look at the image it looks like the others only have their faces, and another reason we think this is because it looked like he takes up more space than the others do and they were added in afterword because the spacing isn’t great.
The most stunning monument in our capital is the Washington Monument. At 555 feet high, it is the tallest such monument in the world. It is an obelisk by shape, yet not a true obelisk because it is not carved out of a single stone. The monument was built at intervals between 1848 and 1885. It memorializes George Washington's achievements and his devotion to principles and to his country.
Monuments: The Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, and The Washington Monument. All are representations of our past and have historical meaning behind them. However, what about the other monuments scattered around? While monuments are wonderful and powerful when done right, location, size and resources needed must be considered for the monument to truly mean something. Firstly, monuments are meant to mean something, but can only do that when the location has been planned out and is significant to that area.
“Mount Vernon should be visited for many reasons, it was the home of George Washington, the scenery is beautiful and it has a lot of historical significance. George Washington was our first president and Mount Vernon was his home. He and his wife are buried there today, now it is a museum where over millions of people visit to pay their respects to the first president and his wife, enjoy the beautiful scenery, and experience life in the 1800’s.”
Teddy Roosevelt deserves to be revered in American History for numerous reasons. One of the reasons I chose Roosevelt is because I visited Mount Rushmore this year and I learned a lot about who he was as man and as a person. He is considered to be one of our most courageous presidents. Thai is one of the several reasons why he was honored on mount Rushmore. As soon as Roosevelt was elected he put aside the murder of William McKinley. His first move as president was to attack Wall Street companies such as J.P. Morgan, Edward Herriman, James J Hill and many other big trust funds. Roosevelt wasn't the first person to do this Adams in Jackson had also done things along these lines. Roosevelt was taking a risk by doing this because wealthy people
Lets take a trip back in time to 1884 in the Black Hills of South Dakota. A New York lawyer had just traveled there to inspect mining claims in that region. The man 's name was Charles E. Rushmore. Rushmore was curious by one of the mountains and asked a towns person what the name of the mountain was. The towns person replied saying it had no name. From then on Charles Rushmore started calling it Rushmore Peak. Over time it became known as Mount Rushmore (history.com). During the following years the area of the Black Hills decided they wanted to start attracting tourist the region. I the early 1920s the state historian of South Dakota, Doane Robinson, came up with an idea to attract tourist. He thought of the idea to to carve famous historic heroes of the west into the side of the mountain (history.com). In 1924, Robinson decided to contact the famous American sculptor, Gutzon Borgium, about his idea. Borgium at the time was working on another project for Georgia, but Robinson was able to convince him to abandon his project and come
In Cross-Cultural Claims on Devils Tower National Monument, Dustin, Schneider, McAvoy, and Frakt (2002) explained a conflict between American Indians and rock climbers over the right use of the mountain in Wyoming. Also, they showed how a difference in culture and world perspective can influence the dispute. The climbing discussion emerged almost one century after President Roosevelt declared Devils Tower as the first American national monument in 1906. The reason was the increasing numbers of tourists and climbers in the area due to the release of Steven Spielberg`s movie where the monument was used as a filming site. At that time, the constant
Preserving a monument that represents a past event is essential for the mind to understand both the physical and social reality of life. Throughout the United States, there is an estimate of 50 preserved National Historical Parks and 90 preserved National Historic Sites across the country. While some symbolize the births and/or homes of well acclaimed people, such as the Sagamore Hill House which was the home of 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, others represent the horrible massacre of people in history such as the Whitman Mission National Historic Site where at least 11 missionaries were killed by Cayuse Native Americans who believed the missionaries were responsible for the numerous deaths in their tribe. Each and every site or park holds a meaning to the past of the United States, whether it may be embarrassing to humanity or not. Same logic applies for the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project National Historical Park is important for historical preservation. The aforementioned is what Richard Rhodes conveys to his audience in his speech Preserving a Common Past.
Today, Mount Rushmore is known as a memorial of the birth and growth of our nation, and the individuals who are represented by it are known as leaders of our nation. If I was to develop a Mt. Rushmore of the 21st Century there are several individuals that I would love to include onto this new monument, such as Mahatma Gandhi, Elon Musk, Harriet Tubman, and Helen Keller, as these individuals are all pioneers who are helping to lead this nation to further glory.
In the Black Hills of South Dakota, there is a monument that is dedicated to four of the most influential figures in American history. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt are names that still to this day trigger thoughts of greatness and awe-inspiring men. All four of these men were presidents of the United States. They each had a signature style or brought a particular ideal the American forefront. George Washington was known as the "father of our country." Thomas Jefferson co-authored the Declaration of Independence. Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation. Theodore Roosevelt fought for the little man, was known for his brashness, and
