COLLEGE IS NOT THE ONLY WAY TO FIND SUCCESS
“You have to study well and go to the college because you cannot do anything without a college degree”. Almost parents always mention that sentence to their children because they believe college is the only way to have a successful future. However, when we grow up and have many problems in life, we cannot attend to school or college for many reasons. So we have to build a successful future without college. That statement is not absolutely right because we have seen many people successful without a college degree like Abraham Lincoln, Pete Cashmore, Bill Gate… One person who was successful without going to the college was Abraham Lincoln. He was born on February 12th, 1809 and died on April 15th,

He said, “I missed school a lot, so I was kind of out of sync with my friends. So, I just started going my own way, using computers, trying to learn as much as I could.” (INC) Not like Abraham Lincoln had knowledge from books, Pete Cashmore learned by reading, learning everything from the internet by using computer. Pete Cashmore dropped out College when he was nineteen and then he created Mashable in Scotland. With the passion of writing and technology, Pete chooses writing a blog. “He had no interest in going to college. It wasn’t the studying that turned him off, but rather the authority figures. So while he waited for his next flash of inspiration …” (INC). According to the statement above, we can see Pete does not have any interest in college. He chose to another way to have a better life is business and then he is already successful with the CEO of a big media company. Pete is not the only one person who succeeds in technology field without a college degree; we also have many people like him on over the …show more content…
With technology passion, Bill Gates dropped out college to follow his passion and he became CEO of Microsoft, and one of the richest billionaires in the world. Although he enrolled at Harvard University, Bill did not finish college program and so he did not have any college degree until now. On a website, it mentioned that “Bill Gates remained in contact with Paul Allen, who, after attending Washington State University for two years, dropped out and moved to Boston, Massachusetts, to work for Honeywell.” (Biography) Together, Paul and Bill Gate created Microsoft Corporation which is now the technology giant in the world. He goes over many problems in his life, he also has a lot of experiences of his major, business and he also learns more than he is in college. However, Bill Gates regrets about missing college, he said, “I loved college. It was so exciting to have conversations with lots of really smart people my age and to learn from great
Despite what the current belief about higher education might convey, not everyone has to attend college. Larry Cuban attests to the rendering mantra of everyone needs to go to college in his blog post, “Why Everyone Shouldn't Go To College”, reposted by The Washington Post. Surely Cuban does not agree with common and popular belief that everyone needs to attend college in order to be successful in life. Cuban leaves the reader with the uncertain questions of, what could they do instead going to college, will they make a stable living, does higher education mean they’ll not be as successful as a person who doesn’t? Cuban does not address the different options that a person can attend other than college or the benefits of actually attending college.
Gates dropped out of college to start a business with another student like him and then soon after launched as a billionaire. Malcolm Gladwell explains that it wasn’t as simple as that for Bill Gates. Gates and his friend, Paul Allen, had spent hours on programming until late hours at the University of Washington near his family home. What was an addiction to programming and 10,000 hours later for Allen and Gates, lead to being a successful launch of the well-known Microsoft program. Although Gates’ hard work paid off, he was fortunate to have access and opportunities to use computer technology when very few had the chance to come near a computer.
Parents believe their kids are too young and immature to make a decision by them selves, therefore they pressure their kids into attending college believing it is the best thing for them. The author does not agree with these actions and thinks that students should decide for themselves whether or not they want to continue their education. If students feel that college is not for them, they should not stay there just because somebody expects them to. Furthermore, she states that if everyone got a higher education everybody would be on the same intellectual level, and there would be no difference in people.
The whole idea that students don’t really need a college education in today’s society is questionable, because employers will often hire someone based on whether or not they have a degree, as well as their past experiences. In many cases today, the people that are making a reasonable amount of money either have a college degree or invented/discovered something that ended up making them wealthy. If you’re one of the lucky few who have invented or discovered something of significance, then you may not need a college degree. For the many of us who aren’t as fortunate, however, a college degree is a
We are told to “go to college” by family, media, and teachers, but we are never given an explanation on why it’s important for us to get a higher education. The importance of higher education is so we can obtain a career that can support our needs and wants. It’s also important because it gives you an advantage when trying to get a job. Employers require a higher form of education, which is necessary for our society to advance. There aren’t many jobs that accept people with a high school diploma as their highest form of education. Employers want people that know what they’re doing, and so does our society. In order for people to go into the career field they want, they need to go to college to learn everything that comes with that career.
Vivian Le Ms.Rose English 3P, Per.2 14 May 2015 College Is Worth It High school graduates attend college for many different reasons whether for career development or increasing one’s knowledge. Students who do graduate from college with a degree have increased job opportunities and financial advantages. However, more and more graduates are rethinking going to college because they are not “college material” or don’t have enough money to pay for their tuition. Although many people believe that college is not necessary to be successful in the future, in actuality attending college is critical because obtaining a college degree allows students to gain more knowledge and advantages for their future.
Do you know why over 18 million people go to college every year? 39% of the 18 million were people who ranged in age from 18-24. Over 447,000 more people went to a non-degree institutions for higher learning. Plus 11.3 million of the students were full-time students. College is extremely valuable because you get paid more and have more job opportunities.
The statement is also important because it is true that many high school graduates are not ready for college. The academic and financial challenges must be taken seriously, and the new college student must realize that he needs to be responsible in order to succeed in college as well as be able to financially support himself throughout college. The last part of the statement is perhaps the most important because it is true that many college students do not have the desire to learn, instead many attend college because of the social aspect, or simply because of the pressure to attend by the parents. The desire to learn is what determines how much effort one puts into his schoolwork. If the student does not want to learn that will reflect on his schoolwork and it will make it hard for him to succeed.
After Gates graduated high school, with a perfect 800 on the SAT, he went to Harvard law school in 1973 (“Gates, Bill” 2) (“Gates, William Henry, III” 1). In 1975 his friend Paul Allen came up to him while Bill was in college and showed him a Popular Mechanics article about a $350 microcomputer, Gates read this article and was convinced that he wanted to be in the computer industry (“Gates, William Henry, III” 1). As a sophomore in college he and Paul Allen made the computer language BASIC compatible to microcomputers, this took much skill and he was the first to do it (Leaders of info 2). He did this for a company called MITS (Leaders of info 2). This shows his motivation to do well in the world, and to be successful. With this new success in the BASIC software, he dropped out of Harvard and went to pursue his new career (“Gates, Bill 1). He went to Albuquerque, New Mexico with Paul and they both founded a new company called Microsoft to mass produce their new software (Leaders of Info 2).
Many of the entrepreneurs and technological innovators we have today started making strides in technology before even attending college. Some start as early as 16 or in their late teens. Bill Gates and the late Steve Jobs are just the more well-known entrepreneurs, who changed the role that technology plays in our lives without the possession of a college degree or even a full college education. Another successful entrepreneur, who dropped out of school at the young age of sixteen and went on to become a millionaire when he sold two advertising companies by the age of 25 for $340 million, is Gurbaksh Chahal. He was able to achieve this using his own ideas and intelligence. In the book, The Dream: How I Learned the Risks and Rewards of Entrepreneurship and Made Millions, Chahal explains, “ People tend to think that in order to start a new business they have to come up with something new and dazzling, but that’s a myth-and it’s often propagated by venture capitalists” (Chahal 59). This quote supports the claim that who people perceive to be intelligent and successful is not always determined by a college degree. He continues by saying that companies are obsessed with what makes someone’s business unique and unrelated to
He told his parents that he wanted to drop out of college to start his own his company because he wanted to be a leader. He started the company with his roommate at the time, Paul Allen. His parents thought that it was a terrible idea for him to drop out of college to start a company. He later proved his parents wrong because the company was later turned into the globally known company, Microsoft. He says becoming a leader of a extremely successful company where he had very little experience of being a leader was one of his greatest
Primary education, Bill Gates received a secondary school in Seattle, but in the 12 years he was transferred to the private Lakeside School. One year later, Bill created the first computer program. It was a time of giant computers that occupied the entire volume of the room and were "subject to" the mind only scientific men in white lab coats the labs.
Bill Gates was raised by a family that allowed him to pursue his passion for education. At the age of thirteen he enrolled in Lakeside School, a private preparatory school (Bill 2). In the eighth grade his school bought a computer and Gates found an interest in it. He began programming the GE system in BASIC, a specific computer language. He then started writing a program working with his partner Allen to make a class scheduling system. During his junior year, he was not allowed near any computers at school for doing what is known as creating the first computer virus (Bill 2). This was a huge accomplishment. During that time period, he and Allen started a minor firm called Traf-O-Data, and made about $20,000 (Bill 2). After graduating from Lakeside, Gates went to Harvard University, but only for two years before he dropped out and began his journey to fame and success with Allen coding computers for IBM (Isaacson 2). Even though he dropped out of school, it was to pursue the success of his passion, which makes him and admirable
There are some people, who make it in life without a valuable education, but it is much more important to have an education and further it for a person’s career and he or she’s life in general. This is stated because it is harder to build a career without an education than it is with one. Doing without an education can be one of the biggest challenges in a persons life and may turn out to truly be an experience that most are not willing to undergo. It is better stated than said that being a high school graduate gets a person further in life than being considered a high school dropout does even though some high school drop outs still
The days of listening to people speak, and other slow methods of learning are all gone and the best you can do is what life is focus on. One needs a college education in order to work a decent job, that’s true. Receiving a college degree to ensure that you will be able to make a good living and be able to provide for yourself as well as your family is what goes with your degree. The idea of a college degree is required to earn a living is simply wrong. If we all had a college degree, the next "best thing" would be a master’s degree and the hunt continues. You end up as a financial debt or for student’s loan. We need a degree not ending up as debtors.
