What makes someone a patriot? The dictionary defines patriot as a “person who loves his or her country and supports its authority and interests”. Many people in society believe that to be a patriot, one must always fly the American flag, vigorously support the country, and be prepared to defend the country against all enemies. The term patriot is misused in society. Although many people believe a patriot is someone that vigorously supports their country and their country’s interest, a patriot is someone who supports their form of government, observes the laws and votes to change them if they oppose them, and most importantly, a patriot remains involved in his or her community.
First, a patriot is someone who supports their form of government. The United States is a constitutional republic protected by the Bill of Rights and these rights guarantee every U.S citizen unalienable rights such as the freedom of religion and freedom …show more content…

Community involvement can range from supporting local police, fire, and EMS departments to regularly involvement in charity to even helping out others in the community. Millions of people were affected by Hurricane Harvey. Hurricane Harvey spawned thousands of patriots not only in Houston, but around the country. Thousands of volunteers within the community and even around the country arrived to help stranded citizens out of their flooded homes and bring them to a safe place. Thousands of military personal, police, firefighters, and EMS professionals arrived to help others. What made them a patriot is their spirit to help strangers that they never talked to before. What made them a patriot is their eagerness to help even though they knew the high risk of these flood waters. Many volunteers died trying to help the stranded. What made them a patriot is that they knew the risk of danger in the waters, especially from electrocution, but they continued to take another step to help
