For 2,000 years diabetes, has been recognized as a disease that has led to devastating deaths and has caused loved ones to no longer be with us. Diabetes is one of the many diseases we wish there could be a cure for. Often people ask themselves, “Can diabetes be cured?” Well the answer is not yet found, but what can be found is “how can we, as citizen’s help curb this epidemic?” In order for people to find a cure, we must first focus on breaking down the bigger picture. There are a few things that could possibly help with ourselves and the loved ones around us.

Think of all the food you eat in one day, how many carbs and sugars would you say are in your food? I know often we don’t really focus on the amount because it’s just food, right? But it’s important to at least keep this thought in mind. Cutting back on carbs could help prevent from having diabetes. If we begin a diet on the limiting the amount of carbs and sugars we eat, our possibility from having diabetes could decrease. Not only would this help us, but others around us might want to do the same when they see a change in our eating habits and see we are taking care of ourselves and the reasons for it. Eating a healthy diet would help lower our glucose level. Regulating meals and snacks and eating fruits and vegetables as well as wholegrain would be a great diet to start out with. It is important to balance out the carbs, proteins and fats. There are More than 29 million Americans have diabetes, 1 in 4 don’t know. This is why it is important for us to get checked as often as we can because even if we try to be on a diet, it can be easy to break and get in bad Habits again. I have a friend who has had diabetes all her life and she just now recently found out when she went to the doctor to get checked.
Something else that could help, which is recommended by every doctor is to exercise at least 30 minutes a day because it can lower the blood glucose level. Walking at a fast paste is one of the simplest exercise.
Gower, carbohydrates are not as important to the human body as they are deemed to be. By properly planning their diet, people with diabetes can minimize their carbohydrate intake. With a carb-restricted diet, the body will start burning fat as fuel, instead.
Try to avoid packaged foods, fast foods and processed foods. Eat as many whole foods as possible. Usually these are found around the outer aisles of the grocery store. If you buy packaged foods, read the labels carefully. Try to minimize your intake of foods with added sugar, salt, saturated fats and high levels of carbohydrates. Opt for whole grains over white bread, pasta and rice. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables. If you choose canned or frozen ones, make sure they are not packed in sugary juices or fatty sauces. Select the plainest versions possible and use dried herbs to add flavor. Choose low-fat dairy products and lean meat and fish. Boil, broil and bake your foods rather than frying them. Be aware of portion sizes to avoid overeating. Consider weighing your foods or using portion plates to determine how much to eat. Stay on a regular eating schedule to avoid blood sugar spikes.
