Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about effective ways to help homeless people in one’s community. Thesis: Homelessness has become a growing problem in our communities, but we can take action by engaging in conversations with them, donating, and volunteering our time to benefit ourselves while making a difference in out communities. I. Everybody has seen them. Their arms reach out begging for your left overs or even spare change. Their signs read, “anything helps, GOD BLESS”. Their distraught eyes test your morals; you think “maybe he/she should get a job”. But if only you knew what obstacles they face day to day, night to night. I. According to the U.S department on Housing and Urban Development, increase in the number of homeless
Homelessness is an issue in American society today that affects anywhere from 800,000 to 3.5 million people. There are a substantial amount of people that are without shelter, food, or employment, and there are numerous other people affected by poverty and homelessness. People living in nearly every city in the United States are affected by homelessness due to the large amounts of homeless individuals living on the streets and begging for money, food, and other necessities. The issue of homelessness has been a constant problem since the conquering of the New World, and soup kitchens and homeless shelters have not been able to fully end homelessness. Especially today, with a lack of affordable housing and high unemployment rates, homelessness is prevalent.
There are varying estimates regarding the number of homeless people in America. According to reports from NLCHP the number of homeless people in America is 3 million which include 1.3 million children. ("Homelessness and Poverty, Overview," 1). As I am living in the state of California so I want you to take notice of the homelessness in this state. Estimates reveal that there are 4,400 to 8,800 homeless people in Foresno County (Della-Piana, 2006). The other areas like San Joaquin County has 2,700 people homeless (Farrow, 2009) and in Sacramento County there are similar number of homeless individuals. The situation has become worse due to financial crisis and financial conditions of foreclosures and layoffs. Other reasons are shortage of cheap housing and increase in inner city drug culture due to which homelessness increased in California's Central Valley.
Job loss is another large contributor to the increase in homelessness. I think that James Temple of SF Gate in his article titled “Striving to serve growing homeless population”, describes this best when he said “The chronically homeless stand alongside the newly desperate, people whose take-home pay didn’t last, who didn’t get the hours they’d hoped for, who unexpectedly lost homes or jobs”. Massive job losses are changing homeless culture. According to the Ken Homa, Goodwill Director of Housing Services in Traverse County, MN, “There has also been a significant increase in people
In the United States the homeless population continues to grow rapidly. Homelessness has been a public health issue for many decades. Often times these individuals feel as though society has turned a blind eye to them. This at risk population is seen by society as lazy or chose to live a life on the streets, but if one would examine this population closely would see that there is more to this at risk population than what society has labeled them as. The forces, which affect homelessness, are multifaceted. Social forces such as family breakdown, addictions, and mental illnesses are in combined with structural forces such as lack of low-cost housing, insufficient health services, and poor economic conditions. Many would
The media: a universal instrument that tugs at our deepest and most sensitive thought processes. Yes, you heard correctly; and, here’s a news flash for you: these mass manipulators that reign over us are stopping at nothing, even so that the homeless community are being dragged into this opinion-filled arena.
In order to combat homelessness and restore the people of the united states to their fullest capabilities, the government has to take the initiative to provide more funding for the homeless. This includes providing shelters for the homeless, while also building jobs for the unemployed ,and raising awareness to all that homelessness is a problem that needs to be addressed.
Since January of 2002 the homelessness rate has increased 69 percent. There are more than 52,400 homeless
Homelessness is a serious issue that is looked down upon within my community. Many homeless die when it’s too hot, too cold, or too wet. The New Orleans Mission sees this a huge issue and argue that homeless people are real people who need real resources, like shelter, food, and clothes. In addition, they have found that, without supportive services, housing is often not enough to end homelessness. From helping homeless youth, to providing assistance in obtaining disability benefits, to providing transportation, to offering intensive job training assistance to homeless veterans. The New Orleans Mission operate a number of innovative
Many people throughout the world look at homeless people negatively, and that is some thing they do not deserve. People automatically assume homeless people are dirty, uneducated, and dangerous, but this is not always true. Many homeless people are war veterans and need help to get their life back on track, but they are too scared and hated to seek it. The stereotypes associated with homeless people make many people shy away from helping them and that is one of the reasons why they are really suffering. I chose homelessness as my topic because it is an issue that should be addressed and examined more carefully. People treat homeless people unfairly because of the stereotypes associated with them and choose to ignore them instead of helping them.
Transition: Now that i've discussed how poverty is constructed, I will share with you how personal problems play a role in homeless.
The thing I would love to do most is help the homeless and give them a second chance at life. The reason I say this is because I have an idea that can actually help the homeless back on the grid of life. Also, I will do what ever it takes to give these people a home to stay in, a job to pay bills, and a car to get to point A to point B, because I hate seeing people living on the street or sleeping in a box, I just hate it a lot. And what gets on my nerves is, people who have money in there pockets, see a homeless who needs help, the person just plainly ignores the homeless person and keeps on going with life. If we stop ignoring the homeless, who knows what could happen. Maybe the government will recognize the cause and eventually help out too. And another thing I love to do is help kids with cancer. Every time I see a kid with cancer, I do what ever it takes to help those kids who have cancer and the kids who are homeless. But the way I help is, donating money and toys to the homeless and the ill kids who are in need is me doing the right thing. Sometimes I think all people in the world need help by someone sometimes. But if you think about it, not all people in the world need help. Like the wealthy, they can solve their own problems, and the financially wealthy, they also can solve their own problems. But the ones that need help are the homeless children and the ill children. Their the ones who need help
Today I’m going to be speaking about the issue of homelessness, as I think it is a problem which is often overlooked, or not given the attention necessary to make a difference. Being homeless isn’t simply not having a place to live – it is the poverty, the inability to find a job, the stigma surrounding it. Shelter is a basic human right, and they deserve it as much as you or I.
Homelessness is increasing more every year. In fact, according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, over 640,000 people experience homelessness every
My general purpose is to tell the United States Congress about homelessness. Why are there millions of people without proper shelter in America? If America is a so-called “great, wonderful” place where you get to live the “American Dream”, well why aren’t the homeless living the “American Dream” in their homes? Why isn’t this social injustice being taken care
Homelessness is the condition of people that do not have a permanent place to live, like a house or an apartment. The issue of homelessness is not subjected to one area, but it is a worldwide problem. Homelessness can result by depending upon a countries economy, and their government because the officials often ignores the issue. Manila, Philippines has 22.8 million who reside in the slums, and 1.2 million of those people are children who live by peddling, or begging on the streets, (Castillo). The Philippines is not the only country that has many homeless children that beg to live or peddle. The number of homeless children in the world is unnatural, and by being internationally intertwined we should put an end to homelessness, especially
